This was ok. I wanted to like it more, but it felt like it spent a lot of time hopping through planetary portals, building a world, but I never felt like I really clicked into the setting or to the characters. There is potential there for sure, but I think it would have played better as a full novel, with more room to breathe. The ending felt very rushed. But if you want a short jaunt around a galaxy with folks chasing the MC for reasons, a funny AI helper named Bugs, and just a little bit of getting to know all the varied alien species in the universe, check this novella out....more

I really enjoyed this at times melancholic ghost novella. We have all been Mara at some time in our lives - lonely, disconnected, at loose ends, and not knowing the next right thing. I loved the goofy mash-up of something like Fixer Upper with a ghost hunter show. There have been a lot of horror books out this year that use tv/film production as the setting, and I really enjoy the convention! I’m a bit hard to surprise, but I was genuinely in the dark about what was going on in this book for most of the way through, and it was a fun place to be. It’s a lovely, sometimes sad story, but with a fined-tuned sense of humor, too. Recommend!...more

There is a new planet with lots of life forms, including the mysterious and intimidating The Grey - sort of the planet’s self-cleansing/resource balancing system? There is a lot going on here - fraught (toxic?) relationships, terrible decisions by the council that remake families, feuding settlements. This is a creeping, tense family drama at the heart of it all, but the horror and sci-fi elements shine bright, too. Who are the real monsters?
Really enjoyed this, and I hope the author gives us more great sci-fi horror mashups in the future!...more
