Absolutely loved them. I was grabbing paper and pens to scribble down notes and quotes. However, by the time I got to chapter four, I felt like the authors tone switched gears, and her tone became very smug and condescending. I listened to chapter five and have decided to label it with a DNF. I know why people love and adore this book, and I’m so glad it’s helped many people, but I personally felt like the author was judging people when they homeschool differently than how her family does it. That’s the beauty of homeschooling. It will look different for each family. There isn’t one way to do it, and it will look different from year to year, and thats okay. I think if your approach to homeschooling has more of an “unschooling” style, then this will be an amazing book for you. ...more

BetweeAlthough I found the narration very well done, I struggled with this as an audio book. I was often confused on when the story was taking place. Between the past stories, past letters, and present story, I was often at a loss. Since this was an audio that I loaned from my library, and someone has placed a hold on it, I am going to abandon the story at 60%. So far, it has been a clean read, which I appreciate. There is nothing particularly alarming about the story that I don’t like, but I must admit; I am bored. I’m trying to find a deeper plot line that will pull this story along for several more hours, but it’s just not grabbing my attention....more

I don’t hate it, and I can see why some people really like it, but I feel like I am forcing myself to read it. I think the author has a warm tone to her writing style, but no matter how hard I try, I just can’t see what she is describing. I need more of a personal connection with the writing for me to really connect and be engaged, and I’m just not feeling it. ...more

I like that the book is a clean read for children and that it does have a unique sounding plot, but this middle grade novel just isn’t delivering enough plot advancement or character development to hold my attention. I do think that this could be a really fun book for younger elementary aged kids though. Also, I want to mention that this is a six book series and all six books may need to be read if one desires to unravel the mysteries developed within this book. ...more

At the beginning I enjoyed the discussions on Austen’s various novels, but the longer I listened the less engaged I felt. The plot felt slow and lack luster, and the characters fell flat for me. For those who are curious about language or content, there are a few chapters with some strong language and profanity. It’s not in every chapter, but when it was used, it rubbed me the wrong way and it made me care for the characters less and less as the story went on. There was also an attempted rape scene and it was just not necessary. Meh. I wanted to like it, but it just wasn’t my cup of tea. The audio was done really well though, so if you are interested in checking this book out, I would recommend listening to it. ...more
