Serena wasn't annoying, which is important to me in these books. Her sister however was, but that was due to her issues, which is the whole point. Hugo was likeable. And the 12 years later was quite interesting. I will be happy to start reading the proper series. I have read the first book in a different series by this author and I rather like her writing, so I imagine I will like this series....more

To read the first 10 pages due to tone. It was just tooooo different to most mythical adventure stories. Which was entirely the point. This is a light and fluffy D&D like romp, but used words like “yeet” and Nachos exist. But after my brain finally accepted the juxtaposition of modern slang/food stuffs with the medieval high fantasy setting, I buckled in for an enjoyable little romp.
Also I feel that some of my issues were that the writer hadn't found her flow yet, as it did smooth out.
I didn't dislike Cin. I didn't dislike Fallon. The side characters weren't bad at all.
Oddly the smexy times between Cin and Fallon felt… Forced. Mostly from Fallon's side. The whole dominant behaviour just felt forced. (But that could entirely be my own hangups due to the whole Neil Gaiman bdsm SA assault news coming out right now. Which has absolutely nothing to do with this author at all, I'm just saying that my feelings about that part of the story might have been clouded due to that.)
All in all I enjoyed it, and I will read the next one. ...more

Whatshername…. (it’s been a few days since I read it)… her entire personality was that she was ‘old’. I don’t remember how old, but for the sake of all PNR/ER books, I’m going to assume she was minimum in her 30s, since that is when women in these books are over-the-hill. She might have *gasp* even been 40. But yup, her entire personality was that she was old.
The Hoppers/planet reminded me of bad Starship Troopers fanfiction.
Not at all sure if I will continue the series. ...more

Yes, this is a Cinderella story. But specifically it feels like Julia watched Ever After and decided to do that version, just set in Regency.
It was enjoyable. I was not keen on the whole 'you'll be my mistress' attitude from Benedict.
All in all, it was quite enjoyable and I wish I had remembered to do my review long before now so that I could properly do it....more

It was a highly amusing second epilogue. Though the narrator felt... weird for the part. It sounded more like the narrator for Simon R Green's Nightside novels (Marc Vietor, not the newer one).

A few little spoilers for books not yet read, which I found a wee bit frustrating as I didn't have much of a choice in listening to it as it was built into the very end of the audio file I had. Oh well, I mean I already knew at least one of the couples that was mentioned. ...more

Enjoyable.
I don't feel like I got spoiled by skipping book 3, as technically I had already been spoiled by the epilogue in book 2. C'est la vie.
I am really looking forward to season 3 of Bridgerton now.
I was listening to this while on morning walks. Unfortunately I had to take a break from those walks because the cold was just too much. Which meant II was listening to this while on morning walks. I wish I had been able to read this one before I saw Bridgerton season 2, but that is only because I always want to read the book before I see the show/movie. HOWEVER, I still did thoroughly enjoy the show, and still enjoyed reading the book afterwards because the changes that were made were nonsuch that they caused me annoyance.
I liked the casting choices for Kate and Edwina, and thus the small changes they made.
I enjoyed being able to picture Jonathon Bailey as Anthony, because we played the part so well.
Back to the novel. The story was enjoyable, if predictable for a second book of a period set novel. The pall mall scenes were quite fun. The PTSD that both the characters have was quite well done and realistic.
I am going to do something I never do, and that is skip the next book and go to number 4 which is Colin and Penelope's story (Romancing Mister Bridgerton, only because season 3 is about to come out and I would like to have read it before then. Then I will go back and read or listen to book 3 (An Offer From a Gentleman )....more

I have to admit I was a little surprised about who was killed in this book. I'll hide my thoughts behind spoilers. (view spoiler)[Honestly I thought the other women were going to be rescued (or at least one of them) and she was going to get her own pair of Monkeys. And I was genuinely surprised that Mike was killed off, but I can also see why... It's a sad state of affairs that anyone not 100% not disabled will get killed off so that they don't slow down plot.

The last quarter or even 3rd of the book was very much showing and not telling, and a very passive voice. This was enjoyable. I can't do a decent review because I've let too much time pass since I read it, and I've given too many braincells over to my work this month. But it was enjoyable. I liked both characters. I don't remember hating the plot.

I did enjoy this, but I liked the show better. I totally approve of the changes they made, including making Mrs Whistledown more pronounced a role as narrator.
Both Daphne and the Duke (omg I'm forgetting his name... oh Simon!) were pretty blank slates in this, so yeah I can see how easily things were shaken up for the show.

The clumsy girl trope was unbelievably annoying.
It was definitely PG 13 porn... which I have mixed feelings about, yes, we need YA with sexual situations in it because guess what, kids are doing that and need to know how to handle it. The fact that it was a Reverse Harem (that's the genre name all the other reviewers needed) is what has me going 'really?' but then at the end of the day, usually most YA is a triangle situation, so why not.
However, they just kept all getting muddled. 5 really is just too many.
But I'm in the middle of work right now so this is all the review I can do. Really just the clumsy girl trope bugged me, but the rest of the time it was OK.
I'm 99% sure what will happen in the next book, I'm actually surprised it wasn't the final reveal of this one. (view spoiler)[She's going to turn out to be the Chaos gods Beta. because there is no way her clumsiness isn't going to just feed right into that. it's chaos personified. (hide spoiler)]
