Turns out Jane Holland is a pseudonym for Beth Good. I decided to give this one a try. Very cute!!! I was charmed. It was just what it claims: A charming and quirky romance for the beach. It's an easy, fun read. Also quite funny. I would try others in this " Oddest Little" collection. All are part of the Kindle Unlimited lot. I'm going with 4 stars for this enjoyable trip to the Cornwall Coast and a big thanks to Beth Good for bringing my blood pressure down before bed the past few nights. ...more

There is one scene in this book, (view spoiler)[ the scene when she locks herself in the bathroom during the violent fight with her husband and he packs a bag and leaves. She waits a long time to make sure he's really gone. When she's sure he's gone, she takes a shower. As she's drying off, she thinks she hears someone creeping around downstairs. The lights are cut and she's trapped in the bathroom, listening to the intruder moving about her house! So suspenseful! (hide spoiler)], that is so intense!!!!! That's when the book hits its stride and we get a nice, slow burn from that point on. A clever thing that this writer does is (view spoiler)[ she makes the reader question the validity of a rape victim's accusations. You may say to yourself: I'd always believe a woman if she says she is raped. But then you realize you are reading and doubting Beth's story. Very clever. But at the end when you see why you were questioning her, you feel like a complete jerk because it's the boys who are bad in this one. REALLY bad. Both of them. (hide spoiler)]. (view spoiler)[ Wow, two really unlikable female characters here! No one has clean hands in this one, unless you count Daniel, who is so naive I could scream. But these women are pretty bad news! I came to sympathize with the mom, Laura, even though she was the one to really crank up the feud by lying to Cherry about Daniel dying. But as it turns out, this atrocious lie pales in comparison to Cherry and her puppy killing, et al. At one point in the book I thought Cherry might not be as bad as she seems, she could still redeem herself. But she chooses NOT to do that in a BIG WAY. Laura comes off conqueror but not before she is pretty much stripped of life as she knows it. And the price she pays is pretty large. It's funny how now that I'm 40-ish, I'm starting to relate more with the older female characters. In this one for example, normally I would have related to the young wife. But instead I'm relating to the mom with the young adult son. It's really shifted my whole reading experience. It's very interesting. I liked this one a lot. I like how it wasn't clear-cut who was good and who was bad, instead the characters were all rather ambiguous. My fave character was Wendy, Cherry's mom. I will therefore NOT recommend that you read this book, but I will say that I found it to be brilliant, unique, refreshing, hilarious (both in dry humor and the ridiculous laugh-out-loud type), creative, imaginative, extremely well-written and equally well-read (I had the audio book. I think this book is best in audio, and that's also how I feel about Bernadette).
