It seemed like a 14 year old writing a oversexed cartoon. The dialogue was immature at best. Neither the so called hero nor heroine have any redeeming qualities. The hero is a walking red flag. He starts to isolate the heroine right away. Everything goes how he says without input from her. I’m also grossed out by a 30 year old sexing up an 18-19 year old. Though the heroine seems to be some kind of sex addict based on her inability to control her impulses and the way her family/town talk about her.
This is listed as insta-love, but it’s more of an jnsta-lust with poorly written sex scenes. So not a romance really. You can’t even really call it erotica as the sex is not part of the overall story as much as the title would have you believe.
If you’re a young adult or teen or college age and reading this book please know this is not how a health loving relationship should work. And if you’re in a relationship that looks like this it’s ok to reach out to DV hotlines for help. ...more

It’s always fun when charters or series have cookbook released.
The first half of the book was good and I marked multiple recipes to try. I’m looking forward to seeing some of these in person since there were no pictures at all in the book. I do prefer a cookbook with some pictures, it gives the baker additional guidance on the finished bake.
I was less than impressed with the second half of the book. I think multiple of these authors do not bake. They were describing improper techniques that will leave you and your kitchen a mess. Also some of the cookies did not seem holiday inspired.
If you can find it for free I think it’s worth it for a few of the recipes. ...more

Not bad, heavy on that action/adventure, light on the romance. Stories like this always remind me of the end of the movie Speed where Sandra Bullock’s character is hooking up with Keanu Reeve’s and one says relationships based on intense situations never work out and they agree to base theirs on sex. The movie has a HFN and that’s how I feel about this book. Do they actually have anything in common? Where do they stand on other things that make a relationship? We just don’t get to see any of that to truly know and feel that deep love between them. Instead we get forced proximity lust. Which is fine, but not really romance.
The heroine is pretty bad ass but the hero has some unchecked misogyny.
I don’t know full how police ranking and what not work, but is it possibly/plausible for someone who’s been a cop for only 1 year to be a detective already?
This book really needed a map at the front of it, there was so much descriptions of trails and ridges and valleys and rivers, I could never really picture how/where they were traveling in relation to everyone else. ...more

Mercy is stronger than she knows at first and it was great to see her recognize that in herself.
Everything wrapped up well. Enough outstanding with the Sinning Light cult to bring it back in another book.
Can be read as a stand alone.
Also, thought not super steamy, it has the next sex scene out of any book in this series and you really feel the connection and heartbreak between them.

I only gave it 3 stars instead of 2 because the action/suspense portion of the book, which is about 75-80% of it, was really good Harlequin suspense and I enjoy this author for the most part.
However I do not view this as a romance. The characters are sleeping together without strings attached before the books starts, the spend the majority of the book apart. Basically all of the action. The so called hero tells the heroine and the reader he’s not interested in more than sex between them. He’s upset she’s pregnant and thought the book only refers to the baby as “his”, never “theirs”. We find out very early on that the heroine is in love and is hurt by the hero through the book in not only his dismissiveness when she tries to talk about their relationship, but in how he doesn’t think she’s capable. We see it first hand in the book right up to the end. There is no real growth by the hero and no chance fora relationship to build and grow in the book.
At best I’d call this a “happy for now” (HFN) book but I expect the strong heroine to wise up and leave. ...more

I enjoyed both main characters though I felt like the author didn’t do a California girl justice. A couple of time I couldn’t believe how stupid Grace was being. Grace has brains and brains, I don’t feel these were actually part of the character, of my the author writing her way around something to make it easier on herself.
Also on the cover Grace is black, but in the book this is never mentioned. Her curly hair is mentioned a couple of times but nothing more. This is a disservice to representation. Harlequin should be called out for this, there is no reason why she couldn’t have been clearly a POC in the book. This seems half a$$ed on the publisher’s part.
Great suspense. Multiple “bad guys”, some are punished some are not, which pulls the reader further into the series.
I would have loved more of a Christmas feel. There were no lights, Christmas trees, music, etc. to convey the holiday. This could have taken place any time of year, which is a pet peeve of mine in holiday books.
I enjoyed this one much more than the first in the series but for the reasons above I can’t give it 5 stars....more

I feel for Rosie at the beginning, and probably through the first 50% of the book. Life after high school doesn’t always work out the way we plan. We make mistakes. Rosie’s seems to be jumping in too fast with the wrong type of guys. But she has more and more TSTL moment as the book nears its conclusion.
In the end I didn’t really like either of the MCs. They didn’t have enough redeeming qualities individually or together.

I just love how she’ll only need a cane for a few days with her severed tendons. (Insert sarcasm) Somethings seem really well researched or the author has a lot of personal knowledge about some aspects of things but other topics are way off.
This book took me a long time to read due to a very long break I took part way through. It was very hard at first for me to even try to force myself to read a romance where the hero is in law enforcement (FBI) with a history of excessive force (literally in his record). It turned me off, and seemed to read poorly in the political climate of our country. Thankfully after my approximate 10 month reading break I’d forgotten that aspect of the story (thankfully I’d remember the main plot points) and really did end up liking the hero.
I liked the heroine just fine from the get ho but when she was being chased she suddenly became TSTL. Thankfully that didn’t seem to last long.
These two were already in love but had split due to commitment issues and needs not being met (yeah for healthy breakups). So it was more about them reconnecting and not falling in love. Which all of that was fine, but there was no sex, not even implied or closed door. I feel like HI has changed their formula. This in the second HI I’ve read recently where there is no sex. I really want that connection between my characters, something more than a peck in the lips at least. If Harlequin readers want intrigue and suspense without sex they can read the Love Inspired line. ...more

I really wanted Faith to not be dead and for them to find her trapped somewhere. Don’t ask me why, I don’t know, just seemed like it would make it exciting. >.<
I did have a few issues, and they pulled me out of the book, so that could have been why I didn’t feel overly connected. First: No way in a town of only 250 people would there be some of the things they had. (e.g. funeral home, there is no way for enough annual deaths to keep something like that in business) Second: this is not just with this book but often in “Christmas” titles books, this had absolutely zero to do with Christmas. Cold weather and snow were mentioned 2-3 times that’s the closest anything could be to making this a Christmas book. I get Harlequin doesn’t care once you buy the book, their marketing team has done their job, but sheesh stop using Christmas (or other holidays) to sell books that have zero to do with it. Third: I’m obviously not an expert in CIA special forces or whatever but I find it highly improbably that he’d hav ALLLLLLLL this real world experience and have been burned and hunted by the time he was 30.
I was happy that the heroine was strong. She wasn’t a doormat. She didn’t require the hero to tell her what she was worth. She knew her own worth. She was strong and independent.
Anyway, it wasn’t bad, would probably rate it 3.5 stars if there were half stars.

This is the second book in the Prison series, and this series is just not coining it for me. The books are too long without enough cohesiveness. With the BDB books the reader is drawn in and can picture each character, the settings, the feel of surroundings, these books, not so much. All of the prison stuff is so discombobulated too. The being “running” keeps being killed but everyone is still locked up, sort of. Some can come and go.

I don’t recalling having read a book by Rita Herron before but I. Dry could have back in the early 2000s when I read Harlequin more frequently. I’m looking forward to reading more by her soon.
Lindsey’s story was so good. This was her book. The back story was strong and you could feel her pain and strength. Gavin was a bit weaker of a character so I was never in love with him, he fell a little flat compared to Lindsey and the plot.
I didn’t mark the book down for this but why was there so much I’ll/we’ll “pray for you”? Maybe because of the time we’re living in where thoughts & prayers are disingenuously offered up to grieving parents, it came off as cringy and not heartfelt. it will give him applause for stepping up when he finds out about the baby and realizing right away he’s at fault and not blaming or being horrible to Lindsey.

Some of Darcy Coates’ fall a little flat, like they build but then nothing really happens, or it does but it’s not big enough for the build up. I didn’t feel this book had that issue.
It was spooky and realist which adds to the fear/anxiety the reader experiences.

It was a little slow to get going and I wasn’t sure I was going to like Ramsey at all. Be he grows and grows on you. I was looking forward to this book because we had glimpses of her two main characters in the previous book. It was pining or lusting from afar and I was intrigued. But this pining/listing didn’t quite pull though right away. There were some gaps in the mystery part of three plot that I wanted to have more elaboration of. Also there was no epilogue which I was expecting since these two are in the epilogue in the first book. J expected to see that scene from their point of view at least.
I really enjoyed Phoebe. I think the author wrote her well which is not often done when it comes to writing children.

Something that bugged me throughout was the cops. None were dirty but they really were portrayed, realistically I guess, not trained to de-escalate, dismissing members of the community they’re suppose to serve, going in hot and heavy and causing problems instead of peaceful resolution. I did not like chief Hernandez in this book, which is too bad since the next book is hers.
Where was the romance? There was nothing between them. He didn’t like or trust her, then in six days he is magically in love? Only one kiss too! I noticed in the first book that the physical depiction of romance and love was light but it was non-existent in this book. If God or praying had been mentioned it would have been a Love Inspired and not an Intrigue.
Chance is not a trained dog so why was he never on the leash and in places he shouldn’t be? (See running loose in the airport)
Why couldn’t Peter stay as reported with the partial hearing loss? That plot made no sense. Also about 2/3 the way through the book his hearing seemed to stop being an issue. Poor editing/continuity.

I do like that the hero and heroine are older. Julie Miller is good at giving us different heroes and heroines that way. But I didn’t really feel that connection between them as far as the romance aspect of the book goes.
Would have rated this higher if I’d stayed engaged and if there hadn’t been multiple mis-gendering of dogs. So odd.

My biggest issue I think, as a horse person myself, was that they kept referring to the main horse as “the colt”. He’s a two year old race horse, I’ve never heard an owner constantly refer to their horse as “the colt” or “the filly” instead of by its name.
