Interessante la voce di questa autrice canadese di origine egiziana (nata a Philadelphia e cresciuta a Dubai, tanto per spiegare il respiro internazionale che trasmettono le sue parole), così come è interessante la struttura del romanzo che mette a confronto una giovane americana di seconda generazione figlia di immigrati (in cui si riflette l’autrice in maniera via via sempre più evidente) che si trasferisce al Cairo per riscoprire le sue radici, e un giovane egiziano con problemi di tossicodipendenza proveniente da un villaggio povero vicino ad Alessandria - il ragazzo di Shobrakheit - che è sopravvissuto alla rivoluzione. La contrapposizione delle due storie corrisponde a quella dei due mondi di provenienza, puntellata e sottolineata da domande filosofiche, nella prima parte, e da brevi incisi e note che spiegano cultura, usi, detti e proverbi egiziani nella seconda, diventa sempre più evidente dal momento in cui i due protagonisti si incontrano, si scontrano e si dividono, momenti in cui a confrontarsi, a scontrarsi e a dividere sono anche il vecchio e il nuovo mondo, l’universo femminile e quello maschile, il patriarcato e il femminismo, in un continuo interrogarsi su identità, appartenenza, prevaricazione, potere. Sempre interessante, ma meno riuscito nell’economia del romanzo, l’esperimento metanarrativo di cui l’autrice decide di fare uso nella terza parte, sparigliando le carte e lasciando in sospeso ogni tentativo di resa dei conti.

Il Rivoltoso Sconosciuto (in inglese Unknown Rebel o Tank Man, cioè Uomo del carro armato; in Cina conosciuto come 王維林 Wang Weilin) è un ragazzo cinese divenuto famoso in quanto durante la protesta di piazza Tien'anmen a Pechino si parò davanti a dei carri armati per fermarli. Nutro un forte senso di colpa nei confronti di questo romanzo, perché ho faticato molto a entrare nel ritmo della narrazione, anche se quando sono arrivata alla fine (la parte che dal 1989 arriva ai nostri giorni, che secondo me è la più coinvolgente) ho provato il desiderio di leggerlo di nuovo e di leggere ancora della storia della Cina del secondo millennio. Mi spiego: la sua struttura, che dispiegandosi nell’arco di settant’anni attraversa la rivoluzione culturale cinese fino ad arrivare ai giorni nostri, è una sorta di scatola cinese, i cui complessi contenuti, scatola dentro scatola, si disvelano in maniera non lineare. Esiste la storia del presente e del passato prossimo - quella della narratrice Maria, cinese, ma nata in Canada - all’interno della quale si narra di un manoscritto, diviso in capitoli, che si tramanda in segreto, (e il cui autore è riconoscibile dal segno degli ideogrammi) che a sua volta racconta della transizione del periodo antecedente la rivoluzione, e una storia del passato remoto - attraverso la rievocazione di coloro i quali i capitoli del manoscritto l’hanno protetto e tramandato - che lentamente permette di ricostruire le origini di Maria e della misteriosa Ai-Ming, arrivata dalla Cina, probabilmente in fuga (gli anni sono quelli degli avvenimenti drammatici di Piazza Tien’anmen del 1989) e delle loro famiglie, travolte e annientate dalla rivoluzione di Mao Zedong.
La storia delle famiglie di Maria e Ai-Ming (che non dirò come sono intrecciate perché l’intreccio è parte del fascino del romanzo), è una storia fatta non solo di ricordi e di legami familiari, o di tutti i soprusi, inenarrabili, che la nazione cinese e i suoi abitanti hanno storicamente e umanamente subito, messi gli uni contro gli altri - genitori contro figli, fratelli contro sorelle, studenti contro insegnanti, in un clima di terrore e sospetto che annullò la volontà di un paese - in un sistema di delazione e punizione che fa rabbrividire e inorridire, ma anche una storia di musica, perché gran parte della vicenda si svolge in un conservatorio, e i suoi protagonisti sono musicisti: e la musica, lo sappiamo, è cultura, e la cultura, sappiamo anche questo, è stato ciò che i marxisti-leninisti cinesi, nella loro follia, vollero annientare e umiliare. È una storia durissima, per tutto quello che concerne le privazioni e la brutalità con cui furono “rieducati” i ribelli (ribelli anche a loro insaputa - bastava un disco, saper leggere, anche solo essere figlio di un musicista, uno scrittore o il figlio di un dissidente), ma al tempo stesso, come dicevo, lirica, poetica, musicale. E concreta, perché le storie di Maria e Ai-Ming, e quella di Zhuli, Passero e Jiang Kai e quelle di Trottola, Grande Madre Coltello e Wen il Sognatore, che sembrano arrivare come un’eco musicale da un passato così lontano da non sembrare reale, si intrecciano in maniera indissolubile a quella di Mao Zedong, di Prokofiev, di Stalin, di Šostakovič, di Hu Yaobang, di Bach, di Zhao Ziyang e del suo splendido discorso in Piazza Tien’anmen*.
Ecco, io ho patito la struttura, come dicevo, avrei voluto che la voce di Maria (che probabilmente coincide per molti versi con quella dell’autrice, anche lei nata in Canada da genitori cinesi) mi avesse accompagnato per tutta la narrazione, così come ho patito il meta racconto contenuto nel manoscritto che, sinceramente, ha evidenziato un mio limite nella lettura, perché non amo che all’interno di una storia se ne racconti un’altra, soprattutto quando l’altra ha il potere di rapirmi e coinvolgermi.
E poi, sì, la copertina è bellissima, tanto che mi sono procurata in fiera anche il segnalibro in pendant :-)

Forse nessuno sa da dove venga la registrazione originale, o se sia arrivata, come un virus, tramite Internet. La matematica mi ha insegnato che una cosa piccola può diventare enorme in brevissimo tempo, E anche che una cosa molto piccola non scomparve mai del tutto. O, per dirla in altre parole, diviso per zero uguale infinito: È possibile togliere niente da qualcosa un numero infinito di volte»: non dite che non abbiamo niente.

L'ho pensato ad un certo punto, giunta quasi alla fine, leggendo il penultimo racconto, l'unico in cui, paradossalmente, o affatto casualmente, il vero protagonista è un uomo. Roy è un falegname, come già altri uomini presenti in questi dieci racconti in cui il lavoro manuale e artigianale è presente e rassicurante, che ama però anche andare nei boschi a tagliare la legna; li conosce gli alberi, li riconosce dal tronco, dalla corteccia, più che dalla chioma come sa fare invece la maggior parte delle persone. «Molta gente riconosce gli alberi dalle foglie o da dimensioni e forma della chioma, ma camminando nel fitto del bosco sfrondato, Roy li distingue dalla corteccia. Il carpino bianco, un legno pesante e ottimo da ardere, ha la corteccia bruna e fessurata sul tronco robusto, ma liscia sui rami e decisamente rossiccia alle estremità. Il ciliegio è l'albero più nero del bosco, e la sua corteccia si screpola in un bel mosaico di scaglie. La maggior parte delle persone si stupirebbe di quanto possono diventare alti i ciliegi nel bosco; non somigliano certo a quelli coltivati nei frutteti. I meli sono più simili ai loro esemplari da frutto: non tanto alti, corteccia non così scura e squamosa come quella del ciliegio. Il frassino è un albero dal portamento marziale e dal tronco rugoso come un velluto a coste. La corteccia grigia dell'acero ha una superficie irregolare il cui gioco di ombre disegna striature nere che possono a volte unirsi in rozzi triangoli, e a volte no. E qui, leggendo queste parole, ho pensato che le donne della Munro sono proprio così: maestose, resistenti, duttili, flessuose, marziali, «possono nascondere la debolezza di venature storte, identificabili da certe ondulazioni della corteccia», oppure essere come la quercia, «l'albero delle fiabe». Sono alberi che sopportano il peso della neve, che si piegano sotto la spinta del vento, che si lasciano accarezzare dal sole, che subiscono i maltrattamenti dell'uomo ma anche di altre donne, che a loro volta, reagiscono, impongono, decidono, spiazzano. Sono donne sinuose, dal tronco sottile, che soccombono, oppure donne imponenti, dal tronco nodoso, che ingannano, donne che nascondono, tutte, all'interno, anelli, e anelli e ancora anelli che ne disegnano la vita; sono alberi dei boschi, immersi nel buio, oppure alberi da giardino, illuminati dal sole. Alberi da frutto, alberi secchi, alberi in fiore, alberi il cui minimo fruscio richiede attenzione. In ciascuna di loro irrompe nella vita un evento al quale si adattano, flessibili, oppure reagiscono, impetuose, o ne restano schiacciate, come abbattute dall'accetta di un boscaiolo. Su tutti il primo, «Dimensioni», mi ha tagliato il cuore in tante fette, come se le parole avessero la stessa lama affilata di una sega circolare; solo che alla fine anziché il sangue, è iniziata ad uscire la linfa. E poi l'ultimo, «Troppa Felicità», completamente diverso dagli altri, quello che dà il titolo alla raccolta; una storia d'altri tempi, una storia vera, quella della matematica e romanziera russa Sof'ja Vasil'evna Kovalevskaja, della quale la Munro racconta, dopo averne scoperto l'esistenza sull'Enciclopedia Britannica, gli ultimi giorni di vita; un cambio di registro dovuto non solo all'epoca e ai luoghi, l'Europa della fine dell'Ottocento rispetto al Canada dei nostri giorni, ma sicuramente anche ai protagonisti e a quel clima di "Russi trapiantati in Europa" già conosciuto e respirato nei romanzi di Irène Némirovsky. Eppure, nello stile di quest'ultimo racconto, asciutto, dal ritmo incalzante che accelera rapidamente, nella solitudine di questa donna non ho ritrovato la Némirovsky, ma piuttosto lo stesso senso di smarrimento appena conosciuto nel Lužin di Nabokov, un uomo solo a Berlino, così come Sof'ja è anche lei una donna sola a Berlino, a Parigi, a Stoccolma. Avrebbe potuto dire di sé, nei suoi romanzi, Vissi (in cerca) d'amore, e di matematica; e sembra impossibile a noi, che oggi fatichiamo a comprenderlo, che queste due passioni abbiano condotto la sua vita, forse perché, come scrisse lei stessa, «Chi non ha studiato la matematica tende a considerarla una scienza arida e fredda. La verità è che la matematica richiede molta immaginazione.» E in chiusura della lettera, quella frase isolata e tremenda. «Se ti amassi, avrei scritto cose diverse». Qualche giorno fa un amico aNobiiano mi ha detto che non vedeva l'ora di leggere il mio commento a questi racconti di Alice Munro. Gli ho risposto: Spero di riuscire a scriverne qualcosa, sono talmente belli che sono senza parole, come di fronte a un quadro. Ecco, magari parto proprio da qui. Ecco, magari parto proprio da qui, da quel cono di luce che all'improvviso illumina esistenze normali, che ravviva quotidianità che camminano nella penombra su binari che corrono paralleli all'infinito, che devia anche solo per un momento il corso della vita, che modifica la rotta. E pensando a quel cono di luce, a quel quadro in cui le ombre hanno la stessa importanza di quei particolari che vengono illuminati, esaltati, posti in evidenza, non posso fare a meno di pensare a Caravaggio, che con un particolare è capace di illuminare una scena intera, anche se la maggior parte del quadro è immerso nell'ombra. Alice Munro ha il dono della chiarezza, della luminosità, la capacità di portare in superficie tutti quei pensieri e quelle incertezze che si agitano nell'animo femminile, di raccontare tutto quello che le donne non dicono, di accendere una luce nell'ombra e di guardarle dall'interno. Le sue sono donne imperfette, ma belle proprio per questo, donne che in questi nove racconti si confrontano, ciascuna con una sua propria grazia e inadeguatezza, con l'universo maschile, un universo fatto di nemici amici mariti spasimanti amanti, di vite che si sfiorano, si intrecciano, si separano. Le donne della Munro hanno ciascuna dentro di sé una parte del proprio essere sconosciuta a tutti, forse persino a se stesse, che amano contro tutti, che tradiscono contro tutti, che fuggono da tutti, che combattono contro tutti, che combattono contro se stesse, e lei, Alice Munro, le osserva senza indulgenza, mostrandole così come sono, nude davanti ai propri sentimenti, ma forti come querce, perché disposte a seguirli. C'è qualcosa in questi racconti, e forse non dipende solo dal fatto che l'autrice sia canadese e quindi le atmosfere si assomiglino, che mi ha fatto pensare a Elizabeth Strout e alle sue protagoniste, da Olive Kitteridge e Amy e Isabelle, ma anche all'Annie Proulx di Avviso ai naviganti: c'è qualcosa di apparentemente gelido nel loro modo di scrivere, una sistematicità che fa sentire indifesi, ma che all'improvviso irradia calore e diventa avvolgente, una capacità unica che permette a ciascuno di noi di ritrovare un particolare di se stesso in ogni racconto. Forse è proprio quello stesso insistere, quello stesso modo di scavare dentro a storie di quotidiana ordinarietà che invece celano tumulti difficili da contenere, quella particolarità, che mi era piaciuta molto anche in Amy e Isabelle, di raccontare il contrasto tra paesaggi tranquillizzanti ma stranianti, in cui tutti i sussulti difficilmente si condividono e ciascuno preferisce continuare a portarlo dentro di sé, la descrizione di terremoti interiori e disagi, ma anche passioni travolgenti, in cui ci si sente soli contro il mondo; forse è tutto questo che me la sta facendo tanto amare e sentire vicina, che l'ha fatta divenire una scoperta preziosa. Forse. Oppure no, ma non importa, davanti ai capolavori generalmente si tace ed ognuno pensa quello che vuole.

Come fare a dire qual è il più bello o quali sono i più belli? Sarebbe come scegliere una perla della stessa collana, una pennellata dello stesso quadro, una stella dello stesso cielo; posso solo dire che Il ponte galleggiante - Ortiche avendoli riletti (sono stati pubblicati nella collana Racconti d'Autore de Il Sole 24 ore) li ho assimilati e respirati con un'intensità ancora maggiore, ma che anche gli altri, su tutti l'ultimo «The Bear Came Over the Mountain» che affronta con una tenerezza impossibile da raccontare un tema a me molto caro, quello della vecchiaia, della malattia e del distacco, hanno ciascuno una propria unicità, un riflesso impossibile da cogliere negli altri. Tutti insieme lasciano senza fiato, come il cielo stellato di una notte d'Agosto....more
