I really enjoyed the train/locked room setting and set-up of a 50th Australian Mystery Writers Society festival. The train is packed with the who's who of crime writers ( 7 in all, including Ernest).
I thought the premise was fun, but with so many characters and discussion about who the murderer was, who had motive, who had opportunity, misdirection, etc AND Ernest's commentary on every situation, it became a lot of work! I was more in the mood to just read and follow some crumbs.
I wanted to finish and find out who the murderer was, but wasn't in a hurry to flip any of the pages to get there. I will read the next, but hope the author goes for "less is more" as this one was a bit drawn out.

She is there to do her best and serve patients, oops, I mean patrons. You see, she is a former nurse, currently running from her past. She also has a few screws loose! Hattie is a widow at 28 and raising her 5 year old daughter. She is also managing the historic inn, Maple Sugar. She definitely has her hands full after losing Brent. She was trying to live his dream.
Christmas is weeks away and the hotel was booking fast, adding more stress to Hattie. She has a grumpy housekeeper who glowers at her and a chef with anger issues.
I loved the setting and the hotel's well-stocked library shelves. There is also fun "book talk" as a book club has made reservations.
This one was a bit on the longer side, but I enjoyed the women's friendship, the dreamy hotel setting, and the little mystery that evolved. Recommend if you enjoy Hallmark-ish/ bookish reads with a dash of mystery.

It is season ten of the hit show Bake Week and 6 bakers will compete at Grafton Manor. The winner will be awarded America's Best Baker.
The mansion is in a tiny village in the middle of nowhere, and holds many secrets that are tucked away in the hidden staircase and two wings.
We get to meet all the contestants and learn about how they really feel about things going on, which is much more than baking!
You'll hear a few screams, get hungry hearing about all the delicious ingredients in the recipes, crave something sweet and question the motives of some. I had a good time piecing together the clues. Read for a lighter, cozy mystery with a foodie theme. ...more

Very much a slooooow burn, but I wanted to finish.
I passed on this as an arc, but when I saw the audio on Libby, decided to give it a listen. Also, picked up the kindle version because I was getting a bit lost just listening. Narration helped with the Welsh names.
Mixed bag for me!
Really enjoyed the two detectives and was invested enough to finish the book. Even though I wasn't glued to it at any point. Also , enjoyed the double twisty twist at the end.
The author spends a lot of time on background stories, too drawn out and too much filler that wasn't interesting. Get to the point!
Some good twists that came in the last third really surprised me. I disliked the victim so so much that I almost didn't care who killed him!
If you like a huge cast of suspects, a bunch of potential suspects with motives (many were boring though), and lots of misdirection, you may enjoy this one. Just know it is a long, drawn out one and you need to pay attention!
Audio was 13 hours, 17 minutes

"Call the captain! We need to stop the ship!"
Ludicrous AND Entertaining = A fun, but OTT popcorn thriller
Loved the cruise ship setting, but nearly half of the novel takes place during another timeline (which was a bit choppy going back and forth).
I was able to predict many of the OTT twists! As out there as they were! I knew it, haha....
I listened on Audible and it was a fun narration overall. The last third really ramped up the pace and couldn't wait to see how everything settled. I do plan to read The Chalet by this author (which I own).

Lily Baines is only twenty two, a petty officer in the Women's Royal Naval Service (the Wrens). She intercepts live radio communications sent to enemy vessels that hunted their own.
"She knew what she heard"
Matt Jackson, a young US officer is hearing a crackle of static on his radio. He hears the "downton abbey voice" and the stakes are high.
A short story/listen ~ it has great narration, some "action" feels, emotion and intrigue. Recommend if you love special connections, Bletchley Park and code breakers history.

She wonders if it is "another run-of-the-mill thriller."
Let's just say it is not!
She soon realizes that her life will change forever.
She is a journalist and this gifted book titled, Falling, will send her to Cornwall, chasing answers. You see, the author was murdered, just like the character in the book. Alex has a sense that something isn't right.
I was wrapped up in the mystery as well as the book within the book. A fascinating premise, with a quick pace and eerie setting. The ending went in a different direction than I thought it was heading. A bit too far from the cliff (no I didn't like it), but still a compelling read! I've read my share of "cliff" books this year and this one kept me reading.

The duo Horowitz and Hawthorne are back at it!
They take a trip to an idyllic island off the south coast of England. The island is remote and tiny. Things go sideways and they find themselves trapped with a killer!
Engaging, fun banter between Horowitz and Hawthorne, double deception, locked room mystery, multiple suspects that all have a motive, and someone with murder in their eyes.
A blast to follow the clues and signposting on this island journey! Narration is great, but when he switches voices, I had to giggle. He sounds so squeaky/nasally, but it works!
