I can't begin to describe how thankful I am that Mimi Yu has graced my existence with this world and its characters. I think it goes without saying that the sequel has now become one of my most anticipated releases and I can't wait until it's in my hands! I'm sooooooo not happy about the fact that I have to wait a year for it though. Can somebody please invent a time machine already? I am desperate here! Anyway, there isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about this book ever since I finished it almost a month ago. I couldn't just choose one quote to feature here but let's just say that I would've featured the entire book as the quote if I could. One thing I wasn't happy about was the fact that the synopsis spoiled a huge part of the plot for me that I would rather it had been kept a secret. It definitely impacted my reading experience enough to knock it down a few points from a full 5 star rating. Besides that hiccup, this book made me erupt and seethe in anger, in the best way. I was so enraptured by the world that I felt as if I were actually in it. My heart constricted with immense sadness. It burst open with joy. And everything else in between. It was an emotional rollercoaster that I never wanted to step out of. It was merciless and brutal with my emotions but I couldn't have been happier about it. This book is told in three different point of views and I didn't mind it whatsoever. All of the characters were so intriguing and I loved them all. One of the POV's was the main reason for my anger but only because the character was just that fascinating. I won't name her but I think everybody will know who after reading this book. I especially loved Nok's point of view. Oh my goodness. His story line was so amazing to witness and I can't wait to witness more of it! I'm sadly counting the days until I get that pleasure since I need to know more about this world and asap! 4.7/5 stars!

"... Starling House was no longer just a house. What had begun as stone and mortar had become something more, with ribs for rafters and stone for skin. It has no heart, but it feels; It has no brain, but it dreams."
This was my first book by Alix and it won't be my last! I am such a SUCKER for any novel that incorporates a house as a character to the story and I am so glad that's exactly what Alix gave me. This story follows Opal and Arthur, two characters tied by a house and the one behind its construction. We get both of their povs and I was over the moon about it, multiple povs for the win! Opal is one of the funniest characters I've had the privilege of reading about, by far. The tab color I used the most was the one dedicated to funny moments/quotes and they all centered around her.
"He looks like a boy who wanted to grow flowers but was handed a sword instead."
I don't have much to say about Arthur except that my heart went out to him a lot. He was absolutely perfect for Opal which had me hardcore rooting for them. Alix knows how to deliver such beautiful and haunting one-liners. The amount of quotes I tabbed is crazy but her descriptions of everything were just as amazing. I wish we had more illustrations since I couldn't get enough of them. After typing that now I want a graphic novel of this. That would be a dream. I have a few cons that prevented me from giving this a solid 4 stars. It took me over 50 pages to get fully immersed into this story and I didn't get attached to the characters until after the 100 page mark. But once I fell, I fell hard. If I had immediately fallen into this story's spell, then the rating would be a lot higher. Now the main reason that put me off was the over-usage of the word 'ugly' when it came to describing characters. I think I can count on two hands the different times that word popped up, at least. I know not every character has to be good looking, I actually prefer them not be, but describe them to us and let us make our decision on it. Don't tell us they're ugly, over and over again. It left such a bad taste in my mouth that I couldn't in good conscience give it a 4. Granted, I read an arc copy, so I don't know how bad this was in the finished copy. If it stayed the same throughout the editing, then that is sad.
"... she doubts that anyone.. has ever intended to wind up here, .. passing through a town whose existence seems accidental, as if the storefronts and gas stations were washed ashore rather than built on purpose."
With all that said, I really loved the extra chapter in the exclusive Barnes & Noble edition. It was a beautiful and much needed addition to the story. I really hope this is isn't the last we see of Starling House....more

I definitely need to read the novels after making my way through all the graphic novels. The only reason this wasn't 5 stars was because the last story confused me a bit at the end... WHAT EVEN HAPPENED?!?!?! I don't know, someone please explain! I like to rate the short-stories in order of favorites but this one was HARD man.... but here we go before I double-guess myself. 1) The New Kid 2) Fetch 3) Room For One More...more

It was honestly hard for me to get into this while reading the first 10-20 pages but I'm so glad I stuck through with it because I am now going to stalk Cassandra's entire collection as it comes out. I will definitely miss the Plague Doctor and The Mermaid. Oh my goodness, this was one of the most unique and captivating stories I've ever read and I'm so sad I got less than 100 pages of it. I didn't quite shed tears but I was SO CLOSE and that's a win for Cassandra for sure. This was addictingly disturbing and I am absolutely hooked. I feel like it might be my new tradition to read this during gloomy weather every year. The only reason this isn't a full 4 stars is because I didn't get enough time with these two! But anyway, I can't wait to dive in to the next one!...more

It definitely sucked me in, so much so that I had to devour it the moment it landed in my hands. With that said, I had a hard time following most of the fight scenes, due to the art style itself. It read more like 'messy sketches', so I couldn't figure out what was going on most of the time. I honestly have no idea if that was my fault or the art styles' so I won't blame the artist at all. Nevertheless, the storyline was pretty cool and I hope it's someday turned into an anime, (if it hasn't already), so I can actually follow along better! I seriously need more horror anime and manga in my life so I can't wait to get my hands on more this year!
