The story is about friendship, perseverance and finding your place in the world. There is a winding plot, characters with depth and a fantastically built world. There were times where the story lagged a bit in the middle but not too much. Listening to the audiobook was like being a part of a fairytale. It is something that should not be missed out on. It’s produced with full sound effects which make it fully immersive. The narrator did an amazing job with all the different voices and accents. He suited the story well. The audio production of this book is a masterpiece! I loved listening to it!

I guess I’m just not into the purpley flourishing literary fiction like I used to be. The book definitely got better as it went on but there was no umph to it. No climax. It just droned on. And boy let me tell you Oprah narrating the audiobook slower than shit sliding off a shoe didn’t help much either. I listened to it at 1.5x just to feel like she was speaking at a normal speed. Don’t get me wrong though. This wasn’t a bad book. It was nicely written. The story has a slow burn to it. The very beginning was just blah basically until Astrid gets to foster care. Then things pick up a bit but still there’s no momentum. I had to read this one for a book club and I remember hearing all this great stuff about it but to me it was like one of those too hot boring summer days, the ones where it’s so hot that you don’t want to move and you can’t make a decision about what to do and it becomes a bust. And I feel I’m being generous with 3 stars. Just because of the way it was written. I don’t know why I feel the need to but I am. ...more

This series is so insanely dark and unnerving at times. I love it. I never know what to expect or how intensely gory some of the scenes will be. There are funny and tender moments too but it’s the stark violence that hits you hard. Once I start reading I can’t tear myself away. There are so many different things going on. The storyline is so much more complicated than I could have imagined when starting this series and the characters have all come such a long way. They’re each so well developed and have so much more substance. I need the next book bad. Talk about needing a sequel stat!!!...more

I figured This was a totally engrossing mystery right from the start. Told from alternating POVs of several characters it had me constantly guessing. I figured out what happened before the end but it was a twist I hadn’t first expected. The secret club at the school reminded me a bit of the book S.T.A.G.S. by M. A. Bennett which was a really twisted bit that tied into the overall mystery. Overall this was a fast paced, totally engaging book....more

Even though not much went on action wise while Mare was kept a prisoner there was a lot of mind fuckery going on. There was always some sort of manipulation at work. The tension was always there. And once the action finally got started after Mare was freed it was not only non stop but also one surprise blow after another. I’m both excited and apprehensive to see what happens in War Storm. I’m a big supporter of team Mare & Cal. However at times she can be a whiny, irrational, bitch and he can be an indecisive, fool who doesn’t speak his mind. This often causes a rift between them and tension around them. Let’s see how things roll in the next installment. Right now I’m super hyped!...more

I don’t think I can finish this audiobook. I’ve tried so many times in the past year and I just can’t get into it. I don’t know if it’s the narrator alone or the language involved in the story or both that’s putting me off but I just can’t seem to get through it. There’s a lot of gore and war but not a lot of clarity. The mystery aspect is interesting as is the fact that the protagonist seems to be of a race that’s not just looked down upon but basically shunned by all the rest but something is just making listening to this like pulling teeth for me. I’m going to give it one more try in this next week before the year is up and if I can’t get all the way through I’m shelving it for good....more

The first third This audiobook was such a pleasant surprise for me. I had no idea of what to expect when going into it and ended up really liking it. The first third moved along at a nice pace as did the last third. There was a part in the middle that was kind of slow though. However there was such a unique unexpected twist. I was blown away. I couldn’t wait to see what happened next. The mystery kept me interested and I liked how it kept drawing in new unusual characters. Steve’s character was so well developed. He was extremely interesting. I was drawn to him from the start and wanted to know more about him. Also the narrator was well suited for his character. He did an excellent job. I think that if the pace remained steady and the book was a bit shorter I would have given it 5 stars.

This series is such a wake up call for what can ultimately happen when freedom of speech is regulated to an extreme or taken away. It’s a great series to read in this day and age. In this second book the characters gained some more depth and background. Speth has evolved into someone stronger and braver than she ever thought she could be. The pace in this book is fast and the action is nonstop. It’s a very quick read and a lot happens in a very short amount of time. I definitely recommend reading the first book All Rights Reserved before this one. It will make things much easier to follow. I’d like for this series to continue as more than just a douology but to be honest I don’t think that it has to. If it ended right here I would be quite satisfied. I’m almost worried that if it goes on it might not be as good. I’m not gonna lie though. If there’s another book I’ll be the first to grab it!...more

It was a feel good holiday tale with lots of dry humor sprinkled throughout. The concept was totally unique. Holly grew on me much quicker than I ever could have guessed. Her cynical outlook on the world had me hook, line and sinker. Usually she would be a character I’d abhor but there was something about her that made her almost endearing at times. This book ended up being another great choice leading into the holidays. ...more

I actually liked it a lot better. However at the end things got a bit murky and confusing. It took me quite a while to sort out what was actually happening.
