The premise and the intention behind it are spot on unfortunately the execution is just not there. The problem isn’t the plot itself because that’s actually ok to some extent the biggest problem is the main character Layla. Her reaction to the situation is just ridiculous. She’s supposed to be an educated 17 year old girl yet she acts like a delinquent 3 year old child when confronted with the internment. She doesn’t show any concern for the safety of herself or her parents and runs her mouth in frustration and anger regardless of the consequences, she sneaks out at night past curfew, and she just basically does anything she isn’t supposed to do. I get being angry and frustrated and all the other emotions she was supposed to be uncontrollably feeling but she was just being reckless and stupid. Lives were on the line. Yes she got a bit more adept at holding back as time went on but she was still reckless. I don’t get it based on all of her knowledge of the Japanese internment camps and that of other crimes against humanity. She even risks her boyfriend’s life by sneaking him into the camp. It seemed like regardless of her knowledge of previous times and facts everyone else was much more aware of the severity of the situation than she was. It was frustrating for me listen to. Ok. As I’ve said, aside from all of that, the timing of this book was right because awareness needs to be made for what our country has the potential to become. Equality is slowly slipping away from us and it’s sad because we have worked so hard for it. Hatred and prejudice is always right under the surface ready to rise up. We can’t let it. 3 stars

I feel like a book as short as this can’t really afford to not grab your attention right away. I was more interested in Nameless than the actual case he was on. Hopefully more about him will be revealed. Oh well. On to the third one. 2 stars....more

He is backed and supported by an unknown man, entity or organization. Hopefully more will be explained about all that in the coming books because that’s really what I’m most interested in. In this book he is after a black widow who has killed three of her husbands. I enjoyed this one as much as the first book in the series. It was fast paced and I like all the references to superstitions. The narrator for these also fits the story well. He also distinguishes between the characters nicely with different voices. Can’t wait to get the next one off of Amazon Prime. 4 stars. ...more

There were some intense twists in this book. Lots of stuff happened really quickly and if you’ve been following the series you’re in for a surprise. I was able to figure it out pretty early on and it was revealed shortly after but that didn’t lessen the excitement of what was happening throughout the rest of the book. It just heightened the anticipation. As always the array of magical characters is delightful. Sparky is one of my favorites. The book is full off quick witted humor and snarky banter. My only regret is that I didn’t listen to book 4 before listening to this one so that’s on the docket for next year. I need to catch up and move forward in the right order. 4 stars. ...more

The narrator did a great job with the voices of all the different animals. She also kept the flow of the rhyming in the story moving along nicely. I think kids will really like this one. It’s also full of accurate information about what to do if you find injured or orphaned wildlife. Each story ends with a list of fun facts about the animal that was rescued. Not only was this book educational but it was also a fun and interesting read. The audiobook was well produced and the narrator suited the story. She spoke clearly and did the voices of the characters well. Great read! 5 stars!!!!!...more

This one fit the bill! It was just what I needed to start off the Christmas season. It starts with a kid who believes in Santa and things go downhill from there. So great! Also, how could I resist I story that references Wilfred Brimley and “the diabeetus”. If you don’t know what I’m talking about definitely look it up on YouTube and you’ll be laughing your ass off. The narrator for the audiobook was solid. He suited the story and did a good Santa voice. Overall I was really happy with this one. 4 stars!...more

Two girls, Lena and Campbell, one black and one white, who barely know each other are forced to depend on one another as their school and city descend into chaos after a football game ignites a race war. It’s well written and touches on sensitive subjects. The alternating POVs adds to the emotional impact of the story and makes it easy to see things the way each girl does. This book hits hard. I listened to it in 2 days. Once I started I didn’t want to stop. The narration was also very well done which added to the experience. 4.5 stars rounded up to 5 stars....more

I love animals more than anyone but I was done listening to the main character drone on about her plight after the first chapter. Animals need someone to be their voice and protector. Unfortunately she played that role to the extreme and for me as a reader it was tedious. I was bored along the way getting to the root of things. That’s not saying I didn’t sympathize with her hatred and reasons for wanting revenge on the men in the village. I just think that if there hadn’t been so much constant extra babble in there I would have appreciated it more. With that being said, I didn’t think this was the amazing, five star book everyone else did. I found it to be pretty bland and couldn’t wait for it to be over. I almost quit listening to it several times. The only reason I’m giving it 2 stars and not one is because I liked the mystery itself and the whole killer in plain sight concept. So I’m giving 2 generous stars. ...more
