THE GHOSTWRITER was a spectacular read that left me absolutely speechless upon finishing it and was quickly placed into my favourite reads shelf for 2017!
THE GHOSTWRITER by ALESSANDRA TORRE is a beautifully written novel that is so emotionally moving about a famous romance novelist Helena Ross that wasn’t always the most likeable person but definitely the most interesting and in the end she totally captured my heart. I have never been so moved and touched by a novel before like I was with this one.
ALESSANDRA TORRE delivers an extremely impressive, well-written, well-paced and touching story here with well-developed characters that was interesting, heartbreaking and captivating to read. I was totally engrossed in this novel from start to finish and it was extremely hard for me to put down.
The way that this story was written is one of my absolute favourite ways as I love books that are about writers and stories within stories as I find them so fascinating and so interesting to read. I also really enjoy when an author drops little shocking tidbits of truth along the way for us to pick up on and chew over which always keeps me guessing and eagerly waiting in anticipation of what is coming next. I like not knowing what is coming next until it is right upon us and then when the big reveal happens I am totally blown away.
What an emotional and powerful end for a beautifully written book that I won't soon forget! Would highly recommend!!
This was an absolutely wonderful book to have shared and discussed with our Traveling Sisters and I thoroughly enjoyed the reading experience! Thank you ladies!!

THE CHALK MAN is a debut psychological thriller novel by C. J. TUDOR that is a chilling, suspenseful, gripping, and a spooky good read that had a sinister feel to it which had me flipping those pages as fast as I could to find out who or what was behind all those mysterious chalk men.
C. J. TUDOR delivers a unique and cleverly written story here with realistic and well-developed characters that all brought a mysterious and interesting aspect to this story for me. There is a constant sense of foreboding surrounding the whole idea of who or what the mysterious chalk men were or represented which did keep me puzzled and guessing throughout this whole story.
The story flips between flashbacks from 1986 and present day of 2016 and I loved the younger voice of our main character, Eddie and really enjoyed how the story was told to us through his childhood eyes. I really enjoyed the interactions between Eddie and his childhood friends which kind of had a STAND BY ME vibe to it and I also really liked the references to the 80’s within the storyline.
Just a word of caution as there was one highly uncomfortable and disturbing bullying scene that took me a little by surprise but other than that one scene the author does a fantastic job at scaring you with words and not through graphic violent scenes.
To sum it all up it was an enjoyable, fun, fast-paced, and an entertaining read which had that creepy good vibe going on without all the gory details. Would highly recommend!!

THE SILENT COMPANIONS by LAURA PURCELL is a spooky, eerie, haunting, creepy, and absolutely fantastic gothic ghost story. I absolutely loved the creepy feel to it and I was immediately drawn into this story right from the very start. There is an underlying sense of foreboding throughout this whole story that had me questioning whether the events that were happening were supernatural, menacing or manipulation.
LAURA PURCELL delivers a clever, atmospheric, and well-written read here with an intense storyline, the perfect Victorian setting, and great characters. The tension slowing builds from chapter to chapter with an ending that definitely took me by surprise. I was reading this late into the night with all the lights out except for the backlight on my iPad and I was spooked! It will be a long time before I forget about those creepy and scary Silent Companions. I don't think this one was predictable at all but I do think that LAURA PURCELL left it up to us questioning whether the events within the story were in the supernatural nature or not.
To sum it all up it was an engrossing, unsettling, suspenseful, and unforgettable read that had me on the edge of my seat in anticipation and had me on hyper alert watching out for creepy wooden figures. Highly recommend to readers who love a really good ghost story!

Traveling Sisters Read with Norma & Lindsay
CHILD FINDER by RENE DENFELD is a disturbing, haunting, unique, captivating, and an absolutely exceptional novel that had us totally engaged, entertained, and intrigued throughout this whole book. This book was so magically well-written with such beautiful prose that had us savouring every single word while we were reading it. We really wanted to take our time and enjoy the writing style instead of rushing right through it to get to the end. Even after finishing it we are still finding that we can’t stop thinking about this book.
RENE DENFELD delivers a vivid and beautifully written story here with absolutely fantastic character development, wonderful narrative, and an extremely enthralling storyline. We both really enjoyed the magical realism aspect within the storyline and thought it was an absolute perfect mix of fiction and fantastical elements.
The story is uniquely told from multiple points of view and incorporated into the storyline from Madison’s point of view are fantastical elements which really added to the storyline which was extremely unique and compelling to show us how she coped with being held captive for so many years. Through the strong female character of Naomi’s perspective and The Child Finder we delved into her hidden past and her story and character kept us intrigued and captivated right to the very end.
To sum it all up it was an interesting, engrossing, unforgettable, emotional, and an enjoyable read that left us both feeling totally satisfied with the extremely touching ending. It just left us wanting a little bit more from our main character Naomi as we still have a few questions about her past as we would love to learn more about her and would absolutely love it if perhaps there might be a sequel in the future! We would absolutely love that! Would highly recommend! This book quickly went into our favourites read shelf for 2017!
We are definitely going to be reading Denfeld’s previous novel, The Enchanted! We both can’t wait to read that!
Cautionary warning - There is an element of child abuse, but it is nothing too graphic and in our opinion it was handled extremely well and with care.

5 stars!! Well that was one awesome all-around great read for Norma & Kaceey! 4 stars!! From Brenda & Lindsay (So for the purpose of this review 4.5 stars rounded up to 5 stars)
We thought it was time to bring our regular Traveling Sisters Lindsay and Kaceey together to do a Traveling Sister Read/Review with us. After a bit of searching by Brenda and trying to coordinate all four us with the same book at the same time with a few unsuccessful attempts, we finally decided to go with FINDING CLAIRE FLETCHER by LISA REGAN from NetGalley. This is our very first Traveling Sister Review with thoughts from all four of us altogether in one review. What a great choice this book was as we all thoroughly enjoyed this emotional and heart-breaking read.
FINDING CLAIRE FLETCHER is an intense, dark, disturbing, haunting, gripping, and suspenseful psychological thriller that captured all of our attention right from the very start and had some of us reading way past our reading goals as we kept thinking of this story and simply could not put it down.
LISA REGAN delivers a well-written and fascinating story here told in two alternating timelines from the perspective of our main character, Claire as we follow along her horrific ordeal that she endured while being held captive for 10 years. As well as the point of view from Connor a detective and his involvement and determination in FINDING CLAIRE FLETCHER. We were really able to feel the nightmare that Claire went through because LISA REGAN gave us a clear picture and a good understanding and insight into the horror that Claire endured asking ourselves why do we read this stuff.
Right away Brenda and Lindsay put their detective skills to work and thought they figured out someone suspicious, almost having Norma convinced but leaving Kaceey not convinced and waiting for it to go somewhere. We had a good laugh over that one.
To sum it all up it was a gripping, fast-paced, and an enjoyable read with a perfectly paced satisfying ending that didn’t feel rushed. Would recommend!!
Thank you so much to NetGalley, Thomas & Mercer and Lisa Regan for the opportunity to read a copy of this book for a fair and honest review.
THE MARSH KING’S DAUGHTER by KAREN DIONNE is an extremely gripping fast-paced suspenseful psychological thWow! Well that was one heck of a good read!
THE MARSH KING’S DAUGHTER by KAREN DIONNE is an extremely gripping fast-paced suspenseful psychological thriller that had me totally engaged, entertained, and interested throughout this whole book. I was flipping those pages as fast as I could in anticipation and fascination finishing this book in less than 24-hrs. I could not put this book down!
KAREN DIONNE delivers an intense, atmospheric, and an angst driven read here with well-developed characters that is extremely well-written with a lot of detail. Just a warning that there is also a very graphic hunting scene that some readers might find disturbing.
THE MARSH KING’S DAUGHTER is told in our main characters, Helena’s perspective alternating between the past and the present. When we first meet Helena we learn that she is happily married with two little girls and then she gets news that her convicted father has escaped from prison and then the action begins with a heart-stopping cat and mouse game of daughter against father.
From Helena’s story in the past we learn all about her childhood of being raised in captivity where she is actually oblivious to the fact that her and her Mother are being held captive by her father. The way that Helena lived and survived while growing up in the marsh was actually quite amazing and I thoroughly enjoyed her story. Her story from the past and present were both equally compelling to me.
Although, I wouldn’t say that this novel was all that suspenseful for me it was the pacing, setting, writing, and the characters that I found so compelling.
To sum it all up it was a riveting, enjoyable, suspenseful, fast-paced, quick and easy read with a satisfying ending. Highly recommend! This book is definitely going into my favourite reads list for 2017!

THE FOURTH MONKEY (A 4MK Thriller, #1) by J.D. BARKER is a dark, thrilling, chilling, creepy, and suspenseful mystery/thriller/police procedural novel that was a captivating, gripping, and fast-paced read that was extremely hard to put down. I absolutely loved this one from start to finish as I was stepping into the sadistic mind of this sick and twisted serial killer. There are so many good twists and turns to keep you entertained and on the edge of your seat with all the cat and mouse games that occurs throughout this story between a detective and a serial killer.
The premise of the book involves the four monkeys which I found to be quite interesting. The four monkeys are Mizaru, covering his eyes, who sees no evil; Kikazaru, covering his ears, who hears no evil; Iwazaru, covering his mouth, who speaks no evil; and the fourth monkey Shizaru, symbolizes the principle of "do no evil".
J.D. BARKER delivers an extremely intense and well-written story here with some cringe worthy scenes that is told through three different perspectives including the serial killer’s backstory by way of diary chapters. The diary chapters was one of my favorite parts of this story as it really allowed me to get inside the life and mind of this disturbing and creepy character.
I couldn’t help but love Detective Sam Porter's character as he was vulnerable, funny and such a likeable character. I really appreciated the witty banter that ensued between him and Nash as it really helped to ease the tension of the disturbing scenes as they could get a little gory at times.
This book was so exciting, fun and thrilling to read that even had a little bit of horror thrown in to keep me totally engaged and eager to read to see how it was all going to play out. The ending was unexpected and spectacular which left me wanting more. So I am so happy to hear that there is a second book coming out and that this is also optioned for both television and film. I can hardly wait!! Would highly recommend!
In addition to reading this book, I purchased myself a copy of the audiobook and although it took me a little bit to warm-up to the narrator voices, once I did I thoroughly enjoyed Edoardo Ballerini and Graham Winton’s performance and thought they both delivered the perfect voices for the characters.
Thank you so much to NetGalley, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, and J.D. Barker for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of this book in exchange for a review!!

“Nothing around here has ever been right.”
The subject matter of this book is quite obvious and unsettling which did make me feel slightly uncomfortable at times but in my opinion the author handles the content gently and with care!
THE ROANOKE GIRLS by AMY ENGEL is a dark, dirty and haunting tale that is emotional, thought-provoking, disturbing, and heartbreaking with a hint of a romance weaved into the story to lighten the mood ever so slightly. I really enjoyed that part of the storyline.
"Roanoke girls never last long around here. In the end, we either run or we die.”
AMY ENGEL delivers an intriguing and powerful read here with flawed and interesting characters. The writing is absolutely phenomenal which is told mostly in Lane’s point of view alternating between then and now as well as the perspective of all the Roanoke girls and their stories. I particularly liked the narration in Lane’s voice as she was quick-witted and had a sense of humor that I found extremely enjoyable to read.
I was also thoroughly impressed with how the author made me feel while I was reading this story. My feelings ranged from total disgust and anger to feelings of love and hope.
Would recommend with caution as the theme of this story might be sensitive for some readers!!
Thank you so much to NetGalley, Amy Engel, and Crown Publishing for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book for a fair and honest review.

IF THE CREEK DON’T RISE by LEAH WEISS is an interesting, compelling, and beautifully written novel that has a really engaging storyline and characters that grabbed my attention from the very first chapter.
Being a Loretta Lynn and country music fan I absolutely loved Sadie Blue’s respect and adoration that she had for Loretta Lynn. The references to Loretta Lynn were quite appealing and enjoyable!
HE’S GONNA BE SORRY HE EVER MESSED WITH ME AND LORETTA LYNN
“She’s got a hard life. Sings hard songs. She found a way up and out of her Kentucky holler. Miss Loretta is a miracle to me.”
LEAH WEISS delivers an impressive read here told in the first person from the perspectives of quite a few different relatable and likeable characters that was easy to follow along with the storyline and all the characters involved.
The ending was a complete surprise!
To sum it all up it was an entertaining, steady-paced, and an easy read with a very satisfying ending. Highly recommend!!
Thank you to NetGalley, Leah Weiss, and Sourcebooks, Inc. for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book for a fair and honest review.

BEARTOWN by FREDRIK BACKMAN is a powerful, memorable, emotional, spirited, and an uplifting but yet gut-wrenching novel with some moments of humour thrown in along the way that kept us all engrossed in this tale of a small town community’s commitment to the well-loved game of hockey.
BEARTOWN is a novel that delves deep into the emotional side of the human spirit/human nature which is packed with passages of wise insights and full of wisdom. Brenda started out making notes, changed to underlining passages in the book and finally giving up because there was too many and thought she might as well mark the whole book.
FREDRIK BACKMAN explores the emotional, physical, and mental side of the players, and has a remarkable ability to make us see and understand them and how they are seen through the eyes of the community. He had us engaged not only with the players but the community as well. He explores right and wrong, fear and courage, limits and loyalty of friendship, the bond and love a parent has for their children and their worst fear, that left us asking ourselves many questions.
Norma and Brenda giggled to ourselves every time Canada was mentioned and wanted to know where in Canada he was actually referring to. It's not like it's that small of a place. Toronto? LOL.
Linda who has read and loved all of Backman’s books did find it started out a little slow and had a little bit too much hockey for her but it did pick up in the second half though. Some of his language and subject matter was a little more colorful than she is used to from Backman. This added to our discussions and the fun we had reading and discussing this book full of awesomeness.
Highly recommend this absolutely amazing, insightful, & inspiring novel! This is a favourite read of 2017 for Norma & Brenda!

BETWEEN SHADES OF GRAY by RUTA SEPETYSHope * Survival * Love * Faith
Well that was another enlightening, emotional, and an absolutely awesome 5* read!
BETWEEN SHADES OF GRAY by RUTA SEPETYS is a deeply moving, compelling, heart-wrenching, and a powerful read which is beautifully written that captured my heart from the very first chapter. This was definitely another page-turner and extremely hard to put down.
“A tiny sliver of gold appeared between shades of gray on the horizon.”
BETWEEN SHADES OF GRAY is a brilliant title for this novel. If we are able to see beyond the black and white of the immoral behaviour we just might be able to see a little bit of human kindness peaking out between the many shades of gray.
“Whether love of friend, love of country, love of God, or even love of enemy—love reveals to us the truly miraculous nature of the human spirit.”
BETWEEN SHADES OF GRAY has us following along the story of Lina, a fifteen-year old girl along with her mother and brother who are deported from Lithuania to Siberia in 1941 by the NKVD, Soviet Secret Police covering a part of history that most people are not familiar with.
“Sure we were safe. Safe in the arms of hell.”
I really enjoyed the format of this novel which was written in very short chapters and narrated in the voice of Lina. RUTA SEPETYS delivers another unforgettable story here that was easy to follow along with the storyline and all the characters involved.
To sum it all up it was a well-researched, heartbreaking, shocking, and an emotional read with a tear-jerker but satisfying ending. Would recommend!!

THE TWELVE LIVES OF SAMUEL HAWLEY by HANNAH TINTI is an abWow! This book definitely took me on one heck of a scary and thrilling roller coaster ride!
THE TWELVE LIVES OF SAMUEL HAWLEY by HANNAH TINTI is an absolutely riveting and captivating tale of a father’s love for his daughter. This book drew me in right from the very first chapter and throughout all of the 12 bullet wounds that Samuel Hawley endured to the very last heartfelt chapter. Loved it!
HANNAH TINTI delivers a touching, moving, heart-wrenching, impressive, and very descriptive read here which was beautifully told through two alternating timelines of the past and present. Each bullet that Hawley takes is a way for us to explore his past and influences some part of Loo’s story in the present which links both stories together in the end. The structure of this tale took me on an adrenaline filled ride that was exciting, fun, and fearful for an absolutely enjoyable and thrilling reading experience.
I couldn’t help but to feel a little bit scared of Samuel Hawley and love him at the same time. I was rooting for him as I could see his goodness and the love that he had for his wife and his daughter. The love and connection that Hawley had with his daughter outshined all the violence and flaws of this character in this adventurous story between a father and daughter.
To sum it all up it was a harrowing tale of love, hope, discovery, acceptance, and forgiveness that was entertaining, exciting, fast-paced, and a quick read with a satisfying ending. Highly recommend!!

A Traveling Sister Read with Kaceey!
LITTLE BLACK LIES by SHARON BOLTON is a dark, haunting, emotional, and an extremely suspenseful thriller with an absolutely gripping and clever storyline that grabs your attention almost immediately and doesn’t let go until the very last sentence. We actually had to put this book on hold because of a few sister reads that we were both participating in and it sure didn’t take us long to get right back into the story (maybe we had to refresh our memory a teeny bit) when we picked it up again and then our other sister reads were put on hold!
SHARON BOLTON delivers in our opinion the perfect thriller here because of all of it’s surprising twists and turns and that ending, wow…...we were totally blown away! We have read quite a few thrillers lately and this one definitely left us feeling totally elated and gasping in awe when we were finished because of how awesome we both thought this book was!
To sum it all up it was unpredictable, suspenseful, and a fast-paced read with an ending that was absolutely brilliant which we both found to be totally satisfying. We already have our next Sharon Bolton novel picked out. Highly recommend!!!

"Her goodbye as she left was as dry as the fields."
THE DRY by JANE HARPER is an absolutely engrossing and compelling whodunit crime mystery / thriller that drew me in right from the very first chapter to the very last page!
JANE HARPER delivers a clever, atmospheric, suspenseful, impressive, and very descriptive read here which was well-written and told in tandem from a past mystery and linking events of a family murder in the present. What really grabbed my attention with this story was the extremely vivid portrayal of place and time. The setting surrounding the dry conditions of this small town in Australia was so vivid that it had me desperately wanting and waiting for the rain to pour!
The novel kept me guessing as the mysteries gradually unfolded, although there was nothing real surprising with the reveal it was the way that the author delivered this story that made this book an exceptional read. I also really enjoyed Aaron Falk’s character and will wait patiently to read the next book in this series.
To sum it all up it was an entertaining, exciting, tense, steady-paced, and a quick read with a very satisfying ending. Highly recommend!!
Sister Read Review by Norma & Brenda One word.....AWESOME!!

If we could give this more than five stars we most definitely would. But, since we can't this gets another five ***** sparkly stars from me! My sister, Brenda and I decided to do another sister read and this time around we chose ALL THE UGLY AND WONDERFUL THINGS by BRYN GREENWOOD. What an extremely good choice we made in reading this one together. This is by far the best book we have read in quite some time and we have read some pretty good books lately.
ALL THE UGLY AND WONDERFUL THINGS by BRYN GREENWOOD is a disturbing, powerful, and an unconventional love story that was beautifully written. We found that her writing allowed us to be disturbed and moved at the same time without glorifying or romancing the subject matter. The title was perfect for this novel as we were showed the ugly of addiction, neglect, and abuse along with the wonderful things of love, strength, acceptance, trust, and commitment.
Your beliefs will be questioned constantly while reading this one. Is this right or wrong? Now there were a few things that we didn't totally agree with and found ourselves questioning while reading this one but the way that the author delivered this story was absolutely riveting and hard to put down.
The author pushes the boundaries here with a story about two lonely, flawed characters who find that their place is with each other and how they are able to accomplish that. Kellen shows us how he is committed by the bond he shares with Wavy by changing things for the sake of Wavy and Donal’s safety and livelihood. There is more depth to this novel than what we might think as a forbidden or unconventional love story if you are able to distance yourself from that.
The story is told in quite a few voices along with Wavy and Kellen's from their own perspectives which was easy to follow along with all the characters and the storyline. Allowing us to see that everyone has their own views and how it is perceived and how it ultimately effects them.
At the end of the book we could not judge Wavy and Kellen, we just accepted it and all The Ugly and Wonderful Things.
Powerful quote: "I AM AS REAL AS YOU ARE."
To sum it all up it was well written, interesting, fast-paced, somewhat disturbing read, with a very satisfying ending. Would highly recommend!!
READY PLAYER ONE by ERNEST CLINE is an extremely entertaining, exciting, cleveWhat fun! Are you ready player one?
Sister Read Review by Norma & Brenda
READY PLAYER ONE by ERNEST CLINE is an extremely entertaining, exciting, clever, and a high stakes adventure that we both thoroughly enjoyed.
Are you ready to escape to the Oasis? READY PLAYER ONE has us following along Wade and his avatar, Parzival in a virtual world called the Oasis completing quests for the ultimate prize. Where the puzzles are a blast from the past, intriguing, action is intense, and the payoff is rewarding.
Pulling us into the past with CLINE’S references to the 80’s Pop Culture and his detailed descriptions of the game brought the world of Oasis alive for us which had us feeling like we were playing the game along with Wade.
This novel was filled with believable characters with real-life traits and we really liked everything that each of them brought to this story throughout this adventure. They each had their role to make this an extremely tense and thrilling read. ERNEST CLINE delivers an action-packed story with a solid plot that was easy to follow along with the storyline and all the characters involved.
We found this to be a fast-paced race to the finish for both the game and the book. Highly recommended read for lovers of all things 80’s! This one is definitely another favorite read of 2017!
To sum it all up it was an enjoyable, fun, action-packed, and a fast-paced read with a big happy smile ending. Most definitely recommend!!

REDEMPTION ROAD by JOHN HART is a gritty, dark, gripping, and a suspenseful thriller/police procedural novel that has a literary fiction feel to it. The road to redemption is a road filled with compassion and emotionally troubled relationships that will have you totally engaged to the surprising and gratifying ending.
JOHN HART delivers an extremely well-written read here that takes you on an emotional and bumpy road of trust and betrayals that tests the beliefs and the personal strengths of our two main characters, Elizabeth and Adrian throughout their complicated relationship.
We loved the unique relationships and understanding Elizabeth had with troubled, flawed and damaged Gideon and Channing which added some backbone to the storyline. The relationships added contrast to Elizabeth's strained relationship with someone close to her.
REDEMPTION ROAD has just the right amount of grit and shocking events with twist and turns that every thriller reader craves!!
We suggest catching a ride along with Elizabeth on her road to redemption. It's a thrilling and electrifying ride! Definitely recommend!!

THE ONE MAN by ANDREW GROSS was an absolutely riveting, exciting, haunting, and suspenseful read with a solid plot that grabbed my attention from the very first chapter and had me on the edge of my seat in anticipation of that oh so exciting climax! I was extremely excited after reading this book that I had to share my excitement with my hubby. This book was that good as I normally don't share my thoughts with him unless the book has that WOW factor and boy did this ever. This novel was extremely hard to put down.
I absolutely love THE COVER of this book and that is one of the reasons that I chose this book to read. A man alone behind a barbed wire fence with that bold title (and my favorite colors). Looked intriguing to me! Awesome!
THE ONE MAN is a brilliant TITLE for this novel. One man on a rescue mission to break out THE ONE MAN from Auschwitz.
THE ONE MAN has us following along the story of Nathan Blum's rescue mission to save Alfred Mendl who is an electromagnetic physics professor and is imprisoned at Auschwitz, as he has the knowledge to help make the first atomic bomb believed to ensure victory in the war.
This novel was filled with compelling CHARACTERS and I really liked everything that each of them brought to this story throughout the novel. They each had their role to make this an extremely tense and thrilling read. ANDREW GROSS delivers a riveting story with a solid plot that was easy to follow along with the storyline and all the characters involved.
The ENDING was surprising, intense, exciting, emotional, and satisfying for another extremely enjoyable read. This one is definitely a favorite read of 2017!
What makes this novel even more special is that we learn from the AUTHOR'S NOTE why he wrote this book and that much of the story is based on truth but there were a few things that the author changed or added to intensify this story.
To sum it all up it was action-packed, suspenseful, and a fast-paced read with a tearjerker but satisfying ending. Most definitely recommend!!!
