The story is not fast-paced, which in my opinion, works well for this nuanced, realistic take on the Buddha's life and renunciation. The book does not shy away from critiquing his abandonment of his wife and son, nor the gender constraints Buddhism places on women. With descriptions that freely incorporate the Pali language, and a narrative that brings ancient India to life, I was enraptured by this audiobook narration by Ellora Patnaik and Ali Kazmi.
