La protagonista è una giovane di New York che ritiene che il possesso della versione della BBC di Orgoglio e Pregiudizio sia una fonte di vergogna al punto da doverlo nascondere dentro un vaso (???) salvo poi ripescarlo ad ogni delusione amorosa. Una vecchia e danarosa zia in visita scopre la sua ossessione e quando muore, le lascia un soggiorno pagato presso Austenland, una location in Inghilterra in cui viene ricreata l'epoca austeniana.
Ora, l'idea di una Austenland non è male a prima vista (esiste anche un film ononimo del 2013, che devo ancora vedere) però poi in realtà la realizzazione sembra un resort per ricche signore che vogliono flirtare (non si capisce poi quanto flirtare) con giovani in abiti d'epoca. Punto.
Durante l'intero soggiorno la protagonista Jane continua a oscillare tra la fascinazione per i flirt e la decisione di liberarsi dalla sua ossessione per Orgoglio e pregiudizio e rinunciare agli uomini. Per tutto il tempo poi è convinta di essere diversa dall'altra ospite della casa, per realizzare poi alla fine di essere stata completamente gabbata! AH!
Il finale è terribile, il romanzo sarebbe stato molto più dignitoso se si fosse chiuso sulla scena in cui Jane manda a quel paese entrambi i suoi pretendenti. D'altra parte, non mi meraviglia che Jane avesse problemi amorosi: il motivo non è la fascinazione per uno sceneggiato d'epoca né il confronto tra persone reali e un perfetto uomo immaginario. Il motivo risiede invece nella completa incapacità di Jane di osservare la realtà ed interpretarla. Chiamare boyfriend un ragazzo con cui ha parlato durante un corso e che ha invitato a una serata in compagnia solo per scoprire che lui non si ricordava il suo nome, è un chiaro esempio di questo comportamento da undicenne.

E' da tempo che sento parlare di questo romanzo ma non mi ero mai interessata, fino a quando non sono rimasta scioccata scoprendo che la mia cuginetta (ha appena finito le scuole medie ed è una grandissima fan della serie di Twilight) ha letto questo libro. Un libro erotico. E le è piaciuto! In realtà Fifty Shades of Grey è in tutto e per tutto un romance, con l'aggiunta di qualche scena spinta e una tematica impegnativa: il BDSM, ovvero una serie di pratiche (sia sessuali che relazionali) che si basano sulla dominazione e sulla sottomissione. Prima ancora di scoprire che questo romanzo è nato come una fan fiction basata su Twilight, avevo notato le straordinarie somiglianze nella dinamica della coppia: lei è imbranatella e sgraziata che per la prima volta si sente attratta da un uomo, lui è un uomo bellissimo (e di successo) che si sente molto attratto da lei per la sua ingenuità ma che - proprio per questo motivo - cerca di allontanarla, perché ha un segreto. Insomma Edward è un vampiro e Christian un Dominatore, ma la dinamica è la stessa.
E come al solito anche questo libro affascina ed è un page-turner, perché non si vede l'ora di sapere come va a finire la storia. D'altra parte, ci sono i difetti: è scritto male e ci sono un sacco di ripetizioni. Mi ricordo all'epoca di Twilight il tormentone sul 'sorriso sghembo' di Edward che appariva ogni pagina circa. Qui l'autrice va a ondate: prima c'è il sorriso enigmatico, poi c'è l'abitudine di alzare gli occhi al cielo, eccetera eccetera. Ma ho lasciato per ultimo il difetto estremo: il finale interrotto! Terribile, terribile. Il che significa che se voglio scoprire cosa succede ad Anastasia e Christian mi tocca sorbirmi altri due volumi. Ebbene sì, anche questa è una trilogia:

Il problema è trovare dei buoni romance ma Lisa Kleypas per me è quasi una sicurezza, e lo è sicuramente questa serie, Wallflowers in inglese, Audaci zitelle nella traduzione italiana. Si tratta di una serie storica, ambientata nell'Inghilterra vittoriana. Annabelle Peyton, Evangeline Jenner e Lillian e Daisy Bowman sono 'ragazze da parete' ai balli della società londinese. Un po' per evadere la noia di serate trascorse senza un singolo invito al ballo, un po' per riuscire nel loro primario intento, quello di trovare un marito, le quattro ragazze stringono un'alleanza e decidono di darsi man forte l'una con l'altra, partendo proprio da Annabelle.
Dopo quattro volumi tutte le nostre eroine sono felicemente accasate. E' Natale e Rafe Bowman arriva dall'America, ospite della sorella Lillian, per incontrare la sua futura sposa, scelta dal padre come condizione irrinunciabile per farlo entrare nella sua società. Rafe non considera inaccettabile un matrimonio d'interesse, considerando che Natalie è bella, simpatica e anche leggermente spregiudicata. Il corteggiamento sembra andare più che bene fino a quando Rafe non realizza di essersi innamorato, e della persona decisamente sbagliata. Come sempre nella serie, l'amicizia tra le quattro zitelle è molto presente nel romanzo e aggiunge un sapore in più. Il romanzo non ha una trama innovativa (i romance hanno strutture molto tradizionali per definizione) e la love story tra i due protagonisti procede fluidamente e velocemente, anche grazie al fatto che questo, più che un romanzo vero e proprio, è una novella. Un punto in più per le deliziose sedute di lettura de Il canto di Natale di Dickens!

In realtà questi libri sono prima di tutto gialli. Protagonisti Lady Julia, appartenente ad una famiglia blasonata e molto ricca, e il detective Nicholas Brisbane, un personaggio a dir poco carismatico.
La trama di questo volume è di per sé uno spoiler allucinante nei confronti dei tre libri precedenti: posso solo dire che l'azione si sposta in India, novità che subito non ho gradito molto, dato che il fascino di questi romanzi per me risiede proprio nell'ambientazione inglese e vittoriana.
Nonostante questo ho apprezzato molto Dark Road to Darjeeling. Bisogna ammettere che quasi tutti i personaggi sono inglesi che hanno trapiantato in questa isolata vallata indiana tutto il loro stile di vita. Un comfort book per eccellenza, quindi, con la nostra coppia di investigatori, una famiglia impicciona e pesante, e un tot di personaggi secondari molto pittoreschi.

Un bello smacco dover rinunciare alla splendida dimora storica da lei amorevolmente ristrutturata ed arredata, ma almeno Weezie è riuscita a tenersi l'ex rimessa ristrutturata, anche se questo significa vivere a due passi da Talmadge e dalla sua perfettissima fidanzata Caroline. Capirete che quando Weezie scopre il cadavere di Caroline nascosta in un armadio, nella villa in cui sta per tenersi una grossa asta, le cose non si mettano proprio benissimo per lei. E mentre si impegna per dimostrare la propria innocenza, Weezie scopre che c'è qualcosa di strano nei negozi di antiquariato della zona, qualcosa che sembra puntare in direzione di una frode. Se a questo aggiungiamo il ritorno in città di una vecchia fiamma con il potere di sconvolgere la vita tranquilla di Weezie...
Una bella sorpresa questo mystery cum romance (piuttosto che il contrario, dato che la trama amorosa è poco invasiva). Ambientato in una calda e indolente Savannah, ha un buon ritmo, dialoghi divertenti, e una serie di personaggi secondari con una bella caratterizzazione anche se sempre nello stile eccentrico tipico sia della chick lit che delle ambientazioni del Sud degli Stati Uniti. Ottima lettura da relax.

Questo in particolare è il secondo della serie dedicata alla famiglia Travis. Il primo è Sugar Daddy, piuttosto conosciuto. Il terzo della trilogia è Smooth Talking Stranger che ha come protagonista Jack Travis. Dato che c'è un altro fratello, mi immagino che la trilogia potrebbe allargarsi.
In questo volume si affronta la storia di Haven Travis, rampolla di una ricchissima famiglia di petrolieri texani. In rotta con il padre tiranno, Haven si sposa con il primo uomo di cui si è innamorata, l'affascinante Nick. Dopo poco Haven scopre che l'uomo di cui si è innamorata è manipolatore e violento ma come purtroppo spesso accade non riesce a tirarsi fuori da questa storia malata abbastanza presto.
Riaccolta dalla sua famiglia, Haven cerca di rifarsi una vita e ovviamente incontra il fascinoso Hardy, che ovviamente oltre che ricco, sexy e attratto da lei, è anche il peggior nemico della sua famiglia...
Che dire, sicuramente la trama non è originalissima, e a dire il vero il concetto delle violenze ad opera di persone con disturbi come quello di Nick è lodevole ma mi è sembrato un pochino forzato nella storia. In ogni caso dopo il primo disappunto (disappunto perché odio le seconde storie d'amore - in questo romanzo Hardy arriva praticamente a metà) mi sono ritrovata a divorare le pagine e a fare più di qualche lacrimuccia qua e là. Quando ho richiesto questo libro su Bookmooch, l'ho fatto solo per noia, perché avevo molti punti e nessun libro interessante in cui investirli. E' infatti rimasto molto tempo (tre anni!) a macerare in libreria, e ogni volta che ci pensavo era con insofferenza, perché ero sicura che sarebbe stato un libro di una noia mortale. Quando l'ho iniziato, però, ho letto di sfuggita qualche recensione su Goodreads, e ho notato che quest'autrice viene paragonata molto spesso a Kate Morton (che io adoro) e quindi le mie speranze si sono risollevate.

Piuttosto fuorviante sia il titolo che la copertina dell'edizione Newton Compton: da East of the Sun si passa a Matrimonio a Bombay con tanto di immagine di una donna indiana e triste sullo sfondo del Taj Mahal: in realtà la storia non riguarda, come verrebbe da pensare, un matrimonio indiano combinato, né il Taj Mahal viene mai nominato.

Esiste anche un terzo capitolo (Blue Christmas - La cena di Natale), ma poi apparentemente la serie è stata abbandonata. Nel primo romanzo Weezie, rigattiera, deve difendersi dall'accusa di aver ucciso la moglie del suo ex marito mentre tenta di sventare una truffa nel mondo dell'antiquariato e di gestire la nascita di una storia d'amore. In questo secondo romanzo la protagonista è la migliore amica di Weezie, Bebe (qualche capitolo viene ancora narrato dalla voce di Weezie, ma sono pochi) che in un momento particolarmente stressante della sua vita si affida mani e piedi al suo nuovo fidanzato, che ovviamente si rivela un abile truffatore e le ruba da sotto il naso tutti i soldi nonché tutte le sue proprietà immobiliari, inclusa la casa in cui vive, abiti mobili quadri e gioielli compresi. Le rimane solo una proprietà, un hotel malmesso in una zona in ascesa, con tanto di scorbutico direttore.

Questo romanzo è davvero carino (certo, ci sono delle svolte nella trama che sono assurde, ma davvero ci vogliamo aspettare verosimiglianza in un romance?) però devo dire che spesso leggo chick lit scritti molto peggio, con una trama davvero stupida, eppure stranamente avvincenti, mentre nel caso della Fforde probabilmente avrei potuto mollare il libro a metà senza grandi problemi. Il problema non è la prevedibilità della trama (tutti i romance e i chick lit sono prevedibili, non è un difetto ma una caratteristica), anzi probabilmente è un problema mio e basta, visto il grande successo dell'autrice. ...more

Proprio a seguito di questa lettura a febbraio 2011 ho trovato su Bookmooch questo L'amore com'è (bruttissima traduzione del non molto più bello titolo originale An American Love Story). Devo dire che mi sono abbastanza vergognata di andarmene in giro con una copertina così smaccatamente kitsch (per non parlare del titolo). Mi sono ricordata del fatto che mia nonna ricopriva sempre con della carta (anche di giornale) i libri che leggeva (per lo più rilegati). Lei lo faceva per non rovinare le copertine, io avrei voluto emularla ma per motivi diversi!
