Since there are so many different poets involved each entry is written with a different prose and voice. I loved how after each entry there is an outro giving a brief explanation about the meaning of the poem. This really helped me connect to pieces that I might have overlooked or not fully understood.
Poemhood is a collection that celebrates resilience, joy, folklore, and the complexities of being Black in America. I really like how Black culture is compared to water, that like water, Black culture seeps into many aspects of society. This is true is so many ways!...more

I read it audio style, absolutely loved it! It was so funny but also made my heart ache. I read most of this book while I was fighting off the flu and that made me very emotional during parts of this book. I felt so much for Luciana, she really felt so alone during this whole process in her life. I couldn't imagine dealing with everything she went through while being a senior in high school! I would lose it. Ugh, precious Abue, even though she is a hot grandma, my heart hurt for her hearing her backstory!
The format of this book is so unique too! As a person who currently lives states away from my family, this is how our phone calls are! Long calls giving all the information and description of events, plus mentioning everyone's reactions too, it felt too real! This is a wonderful debut, I will definitely pick up anything else Melissa Mogollon writes!...more

This collection of poetry is for his friends and those he holds dear. If you are queer and Black, I highly recommend it. Even though I am not the target audience for this collection, many of these pieces come from the Black experience, I still love it and care for it all the same.
Along with the deep meaning, I loved the creativity that came with the formatting of several of these poems. It's not only a literary sense you're gathering but a visual one as well. My favorite line is from 'Acknowledgments': “& how many times have you loved me without my asking? how often have I loved a thing because you loved it? including me.”

We follow 3 generational POV's of Palestinian women, ranging from the 1970's to 2009. They are from the same family who immigrated from Palestine to the US. As the reader, we learn of the cultural and religious circumstances each of these women are born into and must navigate. They each face different experiences and series of oppressions, some given onto one another. Honestly, a lot of it feels so unfair, I wanted to pull my hair out at how this family operates with their expectations of women. I have to say hats off to Etaf Rum. I am nervous when reading literary fiction since I have had some negative experiences with the genre before. Etaf writes in such a clear raw way that she wants you to feel the situation our characters are in. You feel the anger, confusion, the strangulation, of their situations, you just can't help but empathize with these women.
I have such big feelings for the women in this book. I feel I can write a whole essay on them. Isra is the character we spend the most time with. It's so difficult to not empathize with her. She wants love, to be in love, to feel loved, but love is hard to reach for her. We watch her navigate marriage, motherhood, postpartum depression, and abuse. She's the character I cried the most for. Deya is another pov. She searches for the truth of what happened to her parent's past while trying to stand for what she believes in. Fareeda is the matriarch of the family and is the cause of a lot of pain the women in this book have to deal with. I honestly can not stand this character, and even though a lot about her past is revealed, I still despise her.
In all, A Woman is No Man has got to be one of the most heart-wrenching books I have read. I am so glad that I read it and it is now one of my favorite books.

It focuses on Echo, an indigenous girl who keeps mostly to herself. Based on the inferences of the book, she is a a new student in high school. This interesting event happens where she falls asleep in her history class and she is transported back in time during the Pemmican War at a Saskatchewan prairie. There Echo learns about the trade and indigenous Metis people who live on the land.
Since the volume is so short, we only get a surface level understanding of Echo and the Metis people. I think it is such an interesting novel, I plan to read the others in the series with the hopes to learn more about Echo and her heritage.
I love the art style and colors selected in this graphic novel, honestly, half of the meaning is found through the illustrations. ...more

I work in a library so many times I will flip through the new releases and go about my day. I have seen the cover of Out of Body on several of my friends tbr's so I decided to read the first few chapters just for the heck of it. Oh my goodness, I was INSTANTLY pulled in! I had to check the book out and take it home of course!
Out of Body felt like I was watching a movie, there were twists and turns, and I had so many theories of what was happening. I was so invested that I stayed up till 3 in the morning to finish the damn book even though I had work the next day!
I will say these girls are better than me cause ain't no way!! I don't think Out of Body needs a follow-up, but I would still read it! If you are in the mood for a quick sci-fi mystery, check this one out!...more

Arsenic and"I made it to Adeena's fifteen minutes late, which in Brown People Time (BPT) meant I was actually a little early." Lmao this is too true.
Arsenic and Adobo was a fun cozy mystery with A LOT of culture and food! I seriously was starving during every instance I sat and read. It was a quick read with a lot of things happening. This is good but also somewhat confusing.
I think my biggest issue with Arsenic and Adobo is that big events happen in this story and the characters move on from it so quickly. Like "Oh no, a dead body! Let me go get coffee and groceries right after." Lmao With all of the craziness of events happening, I would just want to lay down after a traumatic day and decompress, at least for 1 day! On top of that, we have a ton of characters in this story. I would get confused over who the childhood friends were, the restaurant owners, and the family members. Also, Lila, our main character has a confusing dating history! I couldn't remember who the ex was, the ex-fiance, the ex from high school, and the ex from middle school. Plus she is kinda in a love triangle as well. Hopefully, in the next books, it will get easier to understand.
I am interested in continuing the series, however. I loved learning about Filipino culture and seeing the family dynamics with all of the aunties, cousins, and grandma....more

Even though I am not Muslim or have had the Muslim experience as Huda, I relate to the brown girl experience. I too have felt the pressures to be what is expected of me, I also have had to speak for all the Mexicans of the world.
As someone with no sisters, I loved seeing that having sisters is very similar to having brothers. The baby always gets their way and the constant head-butting with siblings. The relationship between Huda and her mom felt too real! I also was in a similar experience where my mom pressured me to speak for myself but I chickened out. However, unlike Huda's experience, my mom made me stand there and face it but I understand the guilt she felt. As a fellow loner "goody two shoes", this story just made me feel so seen! Things I have to get off my chest first! 1. I could hardly stand Belle, our FMC. lmao She was so annoying to me and I couldn't understand her whole "Everyone ends up leaving" attitude. Like, girly for real, your mother DISAPPEARED! Why do you assume she up and walked away?? Bffr! I also hated that she demanded to know stuff but then she was like, "omg I don't wanna be around that person, let me ignore them and run off!" Ugh, it wasn't until the big reveal that I finally started liking her!
2. I was hoping (view spoiler)["Taco Bell Girl" (hide spoiler)] would have a special appearance. Justice for her! Also,(view spoiler)[ why didn't Belle confront her dad about this!? He better own his actions! (hide spoiler)]
3. I read this one with my ears so Ash, the young love interest, had the same voice and accent as the older guy filming the documentary. Whenever Belle was flirting with Ash, I pictured her flirting with Albert Einstien lmfao. For some reason, Ash was pictured in my head as Archie Madekwe, so I am down with that.
Overall, I was STUNNED at the reveals! It came out like lava! I had an idea but also had no clue! The last 10 chapters had me sooo pulled in! I'm still in shock that it's over. I wanna give this 5 stars but not an "omg best book ever, everyone read" 5 stars. It's more like a "wow, this gave me a lot of emotions and I hate most of you, what is this?!" 5 stars. ...more
