First of all, like a lot of people, I felt that this book had false advertising - if you remove the stories that weren't even close to being near-deatFirst of all, like a lot of people, I felt that this book had false advertising - if you remove the stories that weren't even close to being near-death experiences and the ones where the author deliberately put her life in danger, then there's not much substance left in this book. Moreover, I was irked by the tone of this book that felt moralizing and holier-than-thou in places, especially in "Baby and Bloodstream" chapter when she quotes a book that talks about how lives start before birth, and every aborted or miscarried baby haunts you like a ghost. I'm sorry, but this is so f*cked up to say when we still live in a society that heavily polices women's bodies and even denies them the option of abortion in some countries. I hate how she generalized this very nuanced and heavy subject to fit her narrative and feelings on it. ...more

I only read this book because it was last month's pick for the book club I'm in. And honestly, I never would've read it otherwise. I haven't heard of I only read this book because it was last month's pick for the book club I'm in. And honestly, I never would've read it otherwise. I haven't heard of Patti Smith or Robert Mapplethorpe before so I guess that also affected my reading experience. I didn't like the choppy writing that had a lot of unnecessary details and weird sentences. I also didn't like Patti or her friends that much, I found them very pretentious and annoying even. And while I liked Robert's photos, Patti Smith's music really doesn't seem to be my thing.
I think if you're interested in these people and their art then you will enjoy this book a lot more than I did....more

And even though this novel is directed towards a younger audience and obviously answers their questions, it's still a great read for adults as well. Overall, I'd really recommend checking out either this book or Caitlin's previous novels and don't forget about her YouTube channel! She's brilliant at what she does....more
