He leído tantas, pero tantas opiniones positivas relacionadas a este cuento, que no puedo negar que esa energía de los demás lectores me contagió mucho, por lo que inicié la lectura de este pequeño cuento con bastante curiosidad e interés porque deseaba descubrir algo «diferente» de lo tradicional. No obstante, a medida que pasaban los párrafos todo se fue volviendo más, y más predecible, hasta el punto de llegar al final con un sentimiento completo de indiferencia por lo que acababa de leer. El cuento es correcto, y logra presentar adecuadamente lo que la autora quería exponer, pero personalmente no me ha gustado la historia, me ha parecido aburrida, y no me estremece ni siquiera imaginar que exista algo así en la vida real: Realmente no. He leído cuentos más perturbadores donde se presentan situaciones hipotéticas que me han hecho volar la cabeza, pero aquí, desafortunadamente, esta historia no me ha otorgado nada de ello. Para esta ocasión podría excusarme con el clásico «No eres tú, soy yo», pero no estoy tan seguro de ello. Quizás lo que pudo haber pasado es que estoy acostumbrado a conmocionarme con situaciones más severas, por lo que leer algo tan «leve» en mi opinión, naturalmente no me genera ese «entretenimiento» que anhelaba encontrar. No obstante, no quiero que nadie descarte esta lectura por mi culpa. Si a prácticamente todo el mundo le parece genial esta historia —incluso la calificación es de cinco estrellas para muchos de por aquí—, es probable que a más lectores les guste también el contenido. Para intentar promover la lectura de este cuento —en vez de desintegrarlo con mis palabras venenosas—, diré que para esta oportunidad mi opinión es completamente impopular y que es preferible que cada persona lo lea y formule sus propias conclusiones. Asimismo, como el cuento es tan corto, aquí no vale la pena informar sobre que trata el argumento, ni nada relacionado a ello: Cualquier pequeño dato sería como prácticamente contar el final. Por ello, recomiendo que no lean la sinopsis ni nada relacionado, sino que vayan directo al libro y descubran por ustedes mismos lo que propone la autora. Ya para finalizar, no estaba seguro si calificar este cuento con una o dos estrellas, pero al final he optado por la primera opción. Hay libros que he calificado con dos estrellas porque a pesar de sus defectos y fallas he podido por lo menos disfrutar un poco del argumento, pero aquí no he disfrutado absolutamente nada, y aunque es un cuento correcto, el no transmitirme nada es una clara demostración de que es mejor ser honesto conmigo mismo y puntearlo con una estrella. En realidad 3,5 Hoy me siento un poco confuso, los libros de Richard Matheson me hacen sentir así. Generalmente cuando una obra literaria tiene una adaptación en el cine, lo más normal es que los seguidores de aquella historia comparen ambos proyectos, y les sea fácil elegir qué contenido les gustó más. No siempre el libro es mejor que la película, aunque en el mayor de los casos, sí. Sin embargo, para las historias de Richard Matheson no aplican estos criterios. Cuando leí Soy Leyenda algo que me sorprendió bastante fue lo diferente que es el libro con respecto a la cinta, pero lo más sorpresivo fue ser consciente de que, después de conocer ambas producciones, me era imposible elegir que trabajo era mejor. Creí que era una situación anómala que solo se presentaba en ese libro en particular, pero esto mismo me acaba de suceder con este otro, y ya no puedo engañarme a mí mismo creyendo que es una coincidencia. Realmente, me siento un poco anonadado por no entender la razón por la que sus libros sufrieron tantos cambios en las adaptaciones correspondientes. Eso sí, para ambos casos, tanto películas como libros me han gustado muchísimo, eso es lo verdaderamente positivo. La historia de Chris y Annie es tan romántica, y tan bonita, que no puedo negar que siento envidia por no tener un lazo romántico tan profundo con ninguna persona, tal y como lo viven los protagonistas. Una relación amorosa no es solo sexo y placer, y con este tipo de historias se comprueba esta teoría al ser testigos de esa relación tan bonita que está gobernada por la comprensión, el apoyo, el sacrificio, y un verdadero amor. Cuando se ama se sufre por el dolor y/o ausencia de la otra persona, algo que Chris y Annie viven todo el tiempo, y que logra consternar al lector tocándole las fibras más profundas de su corazón, o por lo menos así me ocurrió a mí. Además, el uso de flashbacks me ha parecido una gran herramienta para esta historia porque nos ayuda a diferenciar claramente entre los momentos felices y los tristes que ha vivido la pareja, algo necesario si queremos comprender a fondo los sentimientos y preocupaciones de ambos personajes. Sentimientos que logran atravesar todas las fronteras posibles porque sin importar el lugar donde se hallan, siempre están pensando el uno en el otro, como verdaderas almas gemelas. No obstante, a pesar de que la historia romántica de Chris y Annie es muy bonita —pero cruel— siento que no es el mejor aspecto del libro. El mejor, sin duda alguna, es la ambientación. ¡Qué genialidad, cuánto ingenio! Son tan geniales y sorprendentes los diferentes escenarios que el autor crea, pasando del utópico paraíso en el que todos desearíamos vivir, al oscuro y lamentable infierno del que a toda costa nos gustaría huir. Son tan buenos los escenarios, las descripciones, la cantidad de características en las que ha pensado el autor, que en verdad, no les niego, me gustaría que al morir pudiera encontrar un mundo así tan bello, perfecto, y con tantas posibilidades y caminos. Sé que en infinidad de libros podremos encontrar cientos de paraísos perfectos, o eso creo, pero este en particular me ha encantado de inicio a fin: Es una completa maravilla. La descripción de las experiencias sensoriales al fallecer, el poder de la mente, la importancia de las oraciones, todo, todo me encanta de esta ambientación. En esas secciones donde Matheson se enfocó en la descripción de los escenarios, les juro que no me importaba el resto de la historia. En esos momentos solo quería seguir leyendo, y seguir imaginando en mi mente un mundo tan bonito, bello y perfecto como el que se describe en estas 320 páginas. La prosa, ha sido diseñada para leerla como un poema, sintiendo cada palabra, haciendo una pausa especial tras cada coma, y aunque al inicio puede parecer excesiva la cantidad de comas que nos encontramos, la verdad es que se nota que el libro tiene este estilo a propósito para que leyendo la historia así, con esos pequeños silencios, logren las palabras calarnos con más fuerza en nuestro interior. Además, contar la historia por medio de un manuscrito se convierte en una opción válida para que la historia logre tener lógica, a pesar de lo fantasioso que llega a ser el argumento principal. Igualmente, la sección del final también ofrece una dosis adicional de lógica; lógica que nos ayuda a comprender las creencias religiosa en la que se basó el autor, para crear su historia. ¿Y cuáles son mis insatisfacciones? Pues bien, no puedo negar que haber visto la película primero, hace muchos años, ha influido un poco en que por momentos me haya sentido insatisfecho. Hay escenas de aquella cinta muy especiales, e inolvidables, y que de hecho hasta las recuerdo con voces y diálogos en mi mente. Por tanto, ha sido algo triste esperar la aparición de aquellas escenas en este libro, y ha sido más triste terminar la obra y comprender que esas situaciones nunca las escribió el autor en realidad. Sí, en las adaptaciones cambian escenas, u omiten detalles para entretener al espectador, pero hay secciones muy especiales de la película que son bastante diferentes en el libro, por lo que he sentido un sinsabor que no me ha permitido deleitarme por completo con esta historia. El final cambia, el rol de sus hijos en los libros prácticamente ni existe —de hecho tienen más importancia los animales—, el encuentro con su padre, etcétera, etcétera. Si tuviera que elegir forzosamente si prefiero el libro o la adaptación, elegiría la ambientación del libro, pero los diálogos de la cinta, sería una decisión justa. (view spoiler)[ Lo que sí no me ha gustado, me ha parecido ridículo para ser honesto, es la impaciencia de Chris de no esperar veinticuatro años a su esposa. En la película recuerdo que el suicidio de Annie lo marcaban como algo tan prohibido, por lo que ella no tenía escapatoria. Annie, se quedaría allí siempre, y por tanto era lógica la decisión de Chris de intentar salvarla porque ella no saldría jamás de ahí. Sin embargo, en el libro fue muy diferente porque Annie no quedaría en el limbo por toda la eternidad, solo era cuestión de esperar, y ella automáticamente iría a Summerland. ¿Por qué recurrir a la impaciencia? Yo pienso que su viaje tan arriesgado nunca fue necesario, solo fue un capricho, y ya. Eso no me gustó para nada. (hide spoiler)] En resumen, un libro que aunque mantiene las líneas generales de la famosa cinta protagonizada por Robin Williams, si presenta algunos cambios interesantes —no todos— que nos permitirán vivir esta historia como si fuera nuestra primera vez. Siempre he pensado que los libros que nos tocan el corazón, independientemente de las fallas que puedan llegar a tener, siempre valen la pena darles la oportunidad, y este libro es uno de ellos. He decidido calificarlo con 3,5 estrellas porque la película, que resultó siendo más conocida que el propio libro, ha creado una sombra gigantesca en torno a esta historia; una sombra que no se puede ignorar, y aquellos detalles que no están aquí, no puedo negar que sí que los he echado de menos. Lovecraft nos presenta un relato buenísimo, cargado de horror, ciencia ficción y una atmósfera siniestra en todo el sentido de la palabra. Dicen que los relatos antiguos —y yo también lo pienso— no suelen generar miedo a las personas que vivimos en esta época porque pasan los años, cambia nuestra cultura, nuestros pensamientos, y de la misma forma también cambian nuestros temores y miedos más profundos; no obstante, en este relato no aplica esa condición, ya que realmente sí se siente el miedo en las palabras de Lovecraft. Quizás la combinación de ciencia ficción y horror es la que permite que esto suceda. Lovecraft usa la hipotética caída de un meteorito a la Tierra como centro de su historia, y un evento así, naturalmente siempre será objeto de especulaciones, debido a la ignorancia que tenemos con respecto a lo que verdaderamente se encuentra en el espacio exterior. Por tanto, pienso que esta historia no tiene fecha de vencimiento. De la misma forma en que este cuento generó miedo a muchas personas en el siglo XX, asimismo puede causarnos miedo a nosotros, a los del siglo XXII, a los del siglo XXX, etc., siempre y cuando hayan incógnitas relacionadas al espacio exterior: Es decir, por mucho tiempo, ¿verdad? Otra razón importante para que este cuento cause miedo al lector es por su inicio. En la parte inicial Lovecraft usa descripciones muy bien detalladas que permiten que como lectores nos adentremos en su mundo, imaginando el movimiento y sonido de los árboles, el silencio de la noche, el cambio de colores, etc. Si logramos imaginar un escenario con aquellas descripciones, sentiremos que nunca nos gustaría estar en un lugar así. Hace pocos días finalicé de leer una colección de cuentos de Edgar Allan Poe, que se destaca justamente por la misma característica de describir escenarios, y por ello puedo decir con seguridad que es notable la fuerte influencia de Lovecraft hacia las características narrativas del autor estadounidense. Su prosa ha sido muy buena, la estructura de su cuento muy bien planeada, y el ritmo de la lectura fue ligero del inicio hasta el final. En verdad me ha gustado mucho. De hecho, tengo que confesar que efectivamente sentí miedo porque me sumergí mucho en la historia. Quizás leyéndola a la luz del día no produzca esa sensación, pero la noche es diferente porque es misteriosa, silenciosa y mágica. Yo, he leído este cuento a la una de la mañana, en una habitación oscura, en silencio, y en un segundo piso. Les dejo a su imaginación, la cobardía que sentí, cuando comprendí que tenía que orinar y necesitaba ir al baño que queda en el primer piso. Leer esta historia ha sido como un creepypasta sin fecha de vencimiento, que me dejó claro la hora a la que debo leer a Lovecraft en el futuro. Relato muy recomendado. ...more |

Una sorpresa inesperada, muy buen libro. La historia de cómo conocí este libro no la olvidaré fácilmente. Podría decir que todo fue cuestión de suerte, Una sorpresa inesperada, muy buen libro. La historia de cómo conocí este libro no la olvidaré fácilmente. Podría decir que todo fue cuestión de suerte, pero a veces, las casualidades me hacen dudar seriamente. Pensar en las casualidades me hace recordar aquellas veces en las que parece que todo ha salido mal, pero después de unos minutos, horas, o quizás días, logramos ver la otra cara de la moneda para entender que no todo estuvo tan mal como creíamos. Por ejemplo, no lograr tomar a tiempo una ruta que nos llevaría a nuestro destino, enojarnos por ello, pero más adelante conocer que las personas de esa ruta han sufrido un serio accidente. O quizás cuando por ejemplo, vamos a retirar dinero de un cajero electrónico pero «desafortunadamente» el cajero no estaba en servicio; nos sentimos frustrados, maldecimos por la pérdida de tiempo, pero más adelante aparecen ladrones, nos encañonan, nos roban, pero nuestro dinero está en un lugar a salvo. Ese tipo de situaciones, que ocurren todos los días, me hacen pensar seriamente en que las casualidades no existen, y que tal y como dicen nuestros padres y abuelos, realmente «todo pasa por algo». Este libro lo conocí —al igual que varios— por mi hermano, quien un día estaba en una librería, observó dos libros que le llamaron la atención, y me llamó por celular para pedirme la opinión de que libro debería elegir para comprar. Yo en ese momento me encontraba en mi casa, casualmente aquí en Goodreads revisando reseñas y respondiendo comentarios, por lo que al recibir la llamada le indiqué que me dictara los nombres para buscarlos y así ayudarlo. El otro libro no recuerdo cual fue, pero este fue uno de ellos. Personalmente ninguno me llamó la atención por lo que no le fui de mucha ayuda, pero por lo menos le mencioné el género al que pertenecía cada uno para que lo tuviera presente. Al llegar a casa, mi hermano apareció con este libro, me lo mostró, y expresó que en verdad quería leerlo. A él le encantan las historias, pero sinceramente le gusta consumirlas pero por medio de audiolibros. Esto se debe a que de niño había una emisora muy famosa en aquel entonces, aquí en Colombia, llamada «Colorín ColorRadio», en la que contaban muchos cuentos e historias. Yo era muy pequeño y no tengo recuerdos de esos momentos, pero mi familia siempre ha mencionado que las tardes eran muy entretenidas al escuchar esta emisora: Me gustaría tener algún recuerdo... Pues bien, a pesar de su deseo por leer físicamente, realmente su tiempo libre es muy limitado, por lo que me propuso que yo lo leyera primero, y si me gustaba, entonces se lo recomendara para no llegar a perder el tiempo con algo que de pronto no le fuera a gustar. Yo acepté, quizás solo por intentar ser un buen hermano porque en verdad no me llamaba la atención, pero al iniciar quedé sorprendido por el libro en general: Realmente, es una recopilación de cuentos muy buena. Desde ese día, como un recordatorio de una cita médica, cada cierto tiempo le menciono a mi hermano su lectura pendiente, pero da la casualidad que él, que sí quería leer esta obra, no lo ha hecho aún. Espero algún día lo lea, quizás se anime con esta reseña. Mapas en un espejo, es una colección de cinco volúmenes, en las que aparecen todos los cuentos del autor Orson Scott Card (Del autor, lo único que había leído hasta entonces, eran cuatro de sus libros de la saga «El Juego de Ender». Es una saga que necesito releer para realizar reseñas decentes aquí en Goodreads —la opinión que tengo publicada de aquellos libros no tiene ni sentido, todo es un desorden, ni redactado está. En el año 2016 desconocía mi don para escribir—, y también para finalizarla ya que nunca la concluí.). Este primer volumen se compone de once de ellos, los cuales tratan diferentes temas de fantasía, ciencia ficción, horror, etc. Generalmente, en las colecciones de cuentos, es normal que varios de los relatos del autor tengan cierta similitud, pero eso no sucede en este volumen. Aquí, cada relato, presenta ideas muy extrañas y diferentes entre sí. No es una antología en la que encontraremos historias perfectas, con grandes finales, pero sí hallaremos ideas realmente extravagantes que nunca se te hubieran ocurrido. Dicen que cuando lees entras en la mente del autor, y aquí lo que ocurre es que entras y quedas pasmado por la imaginación tan grande e inagotable que posee el autor. ¡Mataría por tener una creatividad tan impresionante como la de Orson Scott Card! A pesar de ello, estoy seguro de que no es un libro para todo el mundo. Quizás muchos lectores leerán estas historias, les parecerán simples, aburridas, y tal vez resulten insatisfechos por no encontrar momentos de adrenalina o giros inesperados contundentes. Y sí, puede que sus afirmaciones sean correctas. Sin embargo, a mí me ha encantado este libro porque me gustan los cuentos que no tienen un final definitivo, y que te dejan germinada esa semilla de intriga, la cual crece y te deja pensando en las posibilidades de que algo como ello ocurriera en la vida real. Me gustan los cuentos que presentan ideas diferentes, que te sorprenden, no por su argumento, sino por su temática, y eso es lo que yo he vislumbrado en esta colección de cuentos. Además, esta obra tiene dos partes súper valiosísimas, para mí es su valor agregado con referencia a otras obras. Esas partes son, el inicio y el final. El inicio es una maravilla porque el autor te habla con categoría sobre el género del horror. Te explica las características de una buena historia de horror, y cuáles son los errores comunes a los que recurren quienes no logran comprender el estilo de escritura del gran Stephen King. Son tres páginas, cortas pero contundentes, en las que recibes una clase buenísima sobre el género. Si eres un lector que no tiene aspiraciones de ser escritor, esa información te ayudará a analizar mejor los próximos libros de horror que leas; pero, si en cambio eres un escritor, o quieres intentar por lo menos crear algún cuento en el futuro, estos pocos párrafos se convierten en una clase maestra que no olvidarás jamás. Y el final también es una genialidad porque en un apartado denominado «Apostilla», el autor se sincera completamente con el lector y le revela el origen de cada uno de los cuentos publicados en aquel volumen. Una información que no solo te ayuda a interpretar mejor el cuento, sino que te hace comprender que un cuento puede salir de lo que sea: de un sueño, de una imagen, de un chisme, de un chiste, etc. Anteponemos un millón de excusas cuando necesitamos inventar una historia, pero no somos conscientes de la abundancia de historias que nos rodean diariamente. Sinceramente, este libro me inspira a crear historias, me inspira a escribir, a intentar, a jugar. Yo, personalmente, recomiendo leer la interpretación del cuento justo después de finalizar la lectura de dicho texto. No es necesario esperar hasta el final para leer todas las interpretaciones. Lean un cuento y luego la interpretación, es así de simple. La prosa de Orson es muy sencilla de seguir. A veces sentí que los signos de puntuación intentaban ralentizar la lectura, pero la verdad es que el libro está escrito así. Cuando encontramos un libro con tantas pausas, es justamente porque debemos desacelerar un poco la velocidad de nuestra lectura. Hay que sentir como si cada pausa nos suministrara suspenso en nuestro interior. Es una prosa tan interesante que incluso hay cuentos donde los nombres de los personajes no son necesarios. De los once cuentos, solo dos no he disfrutado porque no me han parecido interesantes, pero los otros nueve me han entretenido por completo. El mejor naturalmente ha sido «Niños perdidos», el último cuento del libro, porque combina una historia real con un evento paranormal convirtiéndolo en mi relato favorito de la obra. Para esta ocasión no escribiré la sinopsis de cada cuento porque siento que el desconocimiento del argumento ayuda a que se viva una mejor experiencia; además, si escribiera la sinopsis contaría lo esencial del cuento, ya no tendría gracia leerlo. Tal y como dice la sinopsis, aquí se encuentran fábulas, cuentos fantásticos, historias de espanto y de terror, narraciones futuristas, cuentos sobre milagros perdidos, sobre la muerte, la esperanza, lo sagrado... Además el inicio, y la Apostilla... En fin, hay muchas razones para darle la oportunidad a este libro, ojalá mi hermano me hiciera caso. Libro recomendado. Próximo destino, Flujo. Me ha gustado, pero me ha aburrido por momentos. En realidad 3,3 La razón por la que me gustan las historias de piratas es por la picardía e ingenio que usan estos personajes para sobrevivir en un mundo incierto, lleno de trampas y peligros desconocidos. Son historias que me atraen mucho por la exposición de la degradación a la que es capaz de llegar el ser humano con tal de lograr sus metas y satisfacer sus ambiciones. Traiciones, aventuras, batallas, miles de alianzas falsas, todo eso me llama mucho la atención de la época pirata. Son historias crueles y de supervivencia para quienes sufrieron las vilezas de los piratas, pero a la vez son historias épicas por la genialidad con la que aquellos piratas no solo sobrevivieron, sino también sobresalieron en un mar en el que fueron perseguidos todo el tiempo por sus crímenes. Quizás por ello me encanta Piratas del Caribe, La isla del tesoro y One Piece (A One Piece lo amo desde lo más profundo de mi corazón, incluso tengo un grupo en Facebook llamado Piratas del Grand Line xD). Por cierto, ya que menciono a Piratas del Caribe, debo confesar que desconocía que la cuarta película —Piratas del Caribe: Navegando en aguas misteriosas— fue creada basándose en este libro. Ambas producciones son muy diferentes por el hilo del argumento, pero sí comparten características y elementos clave como lo son el vudú, la búsqueda de la fuente de la juventud, Barbanegra, el declive de la piratería, etc. Lo que me ha parecido curioso es que leí todo el libro sin saber dicha información, pero hace unas semanas estaba repitiendo toda la saga de Piratas del Caribe, y cuando iniciaron los créditos de la cuarta película, de inmediato vi el nombre de Tim Powers, investigué y descubrí la verdad. Eso sí, a pesar de mi atracción por las historias de piratas, no puedo negar que mi relación con este libro no ha sido saludable en todo momento. Para ser honesto prácticamente me la pasé todo el tiempo quejándome de lo que no encontraba en este texto. No tenía mis expectativas altas, pero siempre tuve la sensación de que el argumento podía ser mejor, de que la prosa podía ser más organizada, etc. No obstante, a pesar de mis insatisfacciones personales, siento que ha valido la pena llegar hasta la parte final. Ha valido la pena porque el último tercio del libro fue escrito con una intensidad media-alta que permite que el lector sienta la adrenalina de los acontecimientos. Asimismo allí, el autor, ofrece explicaciones aceptables —aunque ya no lo esperaba— sobre «la magia del caribe», que aunque no me hicieron delirar, me dejaron satisfecho por el intento del autor de darle un esclarecimiento lógico al curso de la novela. Eso, sin dejar de mencionar, que los combates me han encantado por su descripción. Fueron escenas en las que sentí como si estuviera en medio del mar, sudando bajo el asedio del sol, y buscando sobrevivir en la carnicería que en ese tiempo conocían como batallas marítimas. Lo que no me ha gustado son los personajes. Fueron personajes que siempre sentí superficiales por las ilógicas decisiones que tomaban inesperadamente. Siento que el autor se enfocó más en intentar que el hilo argumental previamente planeado encajara con la historia que estaba desarrollando, que en darle profundidad a sus personajes para que lográramos conectar con ellos: Nunca me cautivo ninguno, ni la damisela en peligro, ni los piratas, ni el protagonista, ninguno. Los personajes siempre fueron mi motivo principal de queja porque no se comportaban de acuerdo a su rol, y cuando el autor presentó flashbacks para intentar que el lector comprendiera sus creaciones, pues tampoco lo logró porque fueron historias sin alma, que sentí forzosamente desarrolladas, como si el autor las hubiera creado con pereza. Fue muy diferente su prosa cuando presentaba flashbacks, que cuando describía batallas y aventuras, fue un cambio drástico. Quizás esos flashbacks pudieron impactarme más, pero si una historia no te la cuentan con magia esas palabras dejan de tener sentido, esas palabras se las lleva el viento. La prosa la describiría como inconstante. Al principio las palabras de Tim me atraparon bastante, y en la parte final igual: Fueron escritas con vida, misterio, y persuasión. Pero, en el resto del libro, ese «encanto» lo perdí por innumerables ocasiones. A veces alguna aventura, encuentro, conversación, o demás, era interesante, atrapaba mi atención y quería leer sin detenerme, pero entonces inesperadamente la historia entraba en etapas de transición para llegar a la siguiente escena. Lo malo fue que hubo tantas etapas de transición, que con el paso de las páginas empecé a sentir irritación por el estilo del libro, y me empecé a sentir confundido porque no podía afirmar con claridad si me estaba gustando el libro, o lo estaba odiando. Así fue la prosa de Tim, desesperante por momentos pero genial en las secciones más importantes. Lo irónico es que la ambientación sí estuvo muy bien desarrollada, y la historia que realmente sí era la principal ha sido bien intrigante: Esos aspectos vale la pena destacar. Sí, efectivamente, la prosa es contradictoria: Te gusta, pero a la vez no. También me ha parecido sobresaliente el contexto de la obra, al recrear lo que fue el declive de la piratería, y exponiendo una faceta de indecisión que también vivieron los piratas. Ellos solo tenían dos opciones, ambas con ventajas y desventajas. O eran piratas hasta la muerte, disfrutando de la libertad de navegar por el mar a sus anchas, pero arriesgando su vida en todo momento; o, aceptaban un indulto que ofrecía la sociedad por todos los crímenes cometidos, pero con la condición de no volver a ser pirata. Muy difícil decisión, teniendo en cuenta que ellos amaban el mar y la libertad, pero también que lo que estaba en juego era su propia supervivencia. En resumen, una obra que a pesar de sus defectos me ha gustado, no me arrepiento de leerla, e incluso deja las puertas abiertas para considerar leer otro libro del autor en el futuro. ¿Decepcionado por los personajes? Sí, completamente; pero en sus demás aspectos pienso que es un libro aceptable que no es una mala opción para conocer un poco sobre las leyendas del mar. Para ellos, el suicidio es una solución viable cuando presentan problemas irresolubles, sean económicos y/o emocionales, y a pesar de que pasa el tiempo no logran encontrar la luz al final del túnel. Nuestra cultura es tan diferente a la del país del sol naciente, que mientras aquí el suicidio es tomado como un acto de cobardía, egoísmo e incluso un pecado mortal, en Japón no existe este tabú y por ello el suicidio es tomado como una decisión comprensible. Los japoneses sufren mucha presión cuando estudian en el colegio o están en un trabajo, y como suelen reprimir tanto sus sentimientos, lo que resultan creando en quienes tienen inconvenientes de adaptarse en aquella sociedad, es una combinación bastante problemática de soledad, depresión y desesperación: En Japón o eres habilidoso, o eres un fracaso, no hay un punto medio. Además, como muchos de sus antepasados se suicidaron por «honor» en guerras, o en momentos de desesperación similares, entonces eso también influye a que los japoneses crean que suicidarse es una acción moralmente responsable. Por tanto, nosotros que somos parte del mundo occidental, interpretaremos de una forma distinta no solo este manga, sino todo el contenido relacionado al suicidio que viene del lejano oriente. En el club del suicidio encontraremos un manga de horror y fenómenos paranormales, con algunas viñetas bizarras, que fácilmente puede ser catalogado como una historia de realismo mágico. Es un manga que me gustó y me atrapó, y que puede servir de crítica para las nuevas generaciones que vertiginosamente entre más pasan los días más parecen actuar sin lógica. Naturalmente, como todo manga, exagera el tema principal del argumento que en este caso son los suicidios masivos en Japón, pero aun así está bien trabajado, tiene la extensión correcta, e incluso algunos paneles representan con rudeza —pero con exactitud— lo que puede causar una depresión no tratada. Una cosa es leer estas historias en la comodidad de tu hogar y teniendo la certeza de que todas son inventadas, y otra muy diferente es que alguien con las facciones de Poe, según fotos de internet, te cuente estos cuentos paranormales. En el siglo XIX las creencias eran muy distintas, por lo que cada relato debió llevar a sin fin de pesadillas para sus lectores. No sé ustedes, pero si yo hubiera vivido en esa época, su casa habría estado muy lejos de mis lugares para transitar. Respecto a la historia, a pesar de ser muy corta, es suficiente para dejarnos una gran moraleja sobre la muerte: Por más que obtengamos dinero, millones de bienes o un alto estatus social, nunca podremos huir de esa cita con la muerte a la que todos tenemos que asistir algún día. El tiempo, es un enemigo tan perjudicial que nos transforma negativamente, por medio de la desesperación, preocupación y con sentimientos de culpa por no saber aprovecharlo. Conocer la existencia del tiempo nos produce una ansiedad tan dañina, que en vez de vivir y disfrutar este mismo instante, nos pasamos el tiempo planeando todo lo que haremos en el futuro: Una reunión, vacaciones, un concierto, un partido de fútbol, etc., y aunque sé que esto no les sucede a todos, a la gran mayoría sí. Tampoco estoy diciendo que planear nuestro futuro sea malo, solo que a veces nos obsesionamos tanto con el tema, que nos volvemos muy inflexibles con nosotros mismos. Por ello, forzarnos a cumplir metas muy difíciles también es perjudicial, porque dejamos de disfrutar lo que hacemos solo por la presión que sentimos por finalizarla: La clave es disfrutar el camino. Empiezo esta reseña de forma tan inusual para explicar que, por culpa de presionarme inútilmente, resulté sufriendo innecesariamente con este libro. Esta recopilación es muy buena, pero me propuse leer sus cuarenta relatos en octubre y aunque lo logré, finalicé muy agotado con el contenido. No es fácil asimilar tantos relatos en tan poco tiempo, por lo que les recomiendo, si sienten interés por este libro, que lo lean a un ritmo lento y así no se torturen innecesariamente. Sobre el libro debo decir que, como toda recopilación de relatos, encontraremos historias muy buenas, pero también otras muy malas. Al inicio creí que los relatos de los autores más conocidos serían los mejores, pero mientras leía fui notando que eso no era así. Los ejemplos más notables son Charles Dickens y Franz Kafka porque sus relatos fueron pésimos. Es recomendable, al leer este libro evitar sobrestimar un texto por la popularidad del autor; en vez de ello, es mejor olvidar por un momento al creador y dejarnos llevar por la prosa e historia presentada. Si lo hacen correctamente, descubrirán que quizás su relato favorito no fue escrito por su autor favorito: Seguramente se sorprenderán. Naturalmente, también dependerá del gusto personal hacia el tema expuesto, por lo que la calificación es otro factor a no tener mucho en cuenta en este caso. Fue una recopilación que me gustó mucho porque no solo son cuarenta relatos muy diferentes, sino que son cuarenta mentes por conocer. Cada autor tiene una forma tan diferente de relatar el miedo y en algunos casos es tan interesante, que es inevitable no sentir deseos de leer otra obra del autor que nos conquistó. En mi opinión, esta es una de las mayores utilidades que esta recopilación nos ofrece: Ayudarnos a decidir que autor de los presentados leer en el futuro. Eso sí, no esperen tener pesadillas o un miedo intenso tras la lectura de estos relatos. Debemos tener en cuenta que son historias antiguas de más de un siglo en la mayoría de los casos, y que los miedos que sentimos en nuestra actualidad son muy diferentes a los que sentían en esta época. Además, somos seres que con tanto conocimiento a nuestra disposición hemos dejado de creer en seres fantásticos como vampiros, hombres lobo, etc., por lo que debemos tomar estas historias como relatos para entretenernos y no como textos para horrorizarnos. Para hacerme entender les explicaré con los niños. Asustar a un niño es muy sencillo. Podemos hacerlo con un objeto, con nuestra voz, con algún animal, con un programa de televisión, con un lugar como un hospital, etc.; esto es posible porque ellos no tienen la capacidad de pensar completamente desarrollada ni tampoco conocen casi sobre el mundo, por lo que no logran distinguir lo falso de lo real. Como seres humanos, le tememos a lo desconocido y para los niños casi todo lo es. Por eso es que a medida que crecemos vamos progresivamente dejando nuestros miedos. Sí, de adultos también le tememos a muchas situaciones desconocidas, pero no podemos volver a sentir miedo por aquellas que sabemos que son falsas. De la misma manera que no nos asustaremos con una historia de vampiros, en el siglo XVIII tuvo que ser anormal encontrar a alguien con miedo a las flechas. Y ya que menciono el tema del miedo, quiero explicar la diferencia entre el terror y el horror: Términos, que comúnmente usamos inadecuadamente. El terror es cuando sientes miedo a algo que tiene explicación, como un desastre natural, a que te hieran el cuerpo por ejemplo con un cuchillo, a los aviones, a quedarte encerrado, a la soledad, etc. En cambio, el horror es cuando sientes miedo por algo sin explicación como un fantasma, seres fantásticos como zombies, etc. Eso significa que el título del libro es un error, porque «Felices pesadillas: Los mejores relatos de terror aparecidos en Valdemar», hace referencia a que todos los relatos tendrán explicación, pero realmente eso no pasa. En muchos casos se contará el relato del evento paranormal, pero la explicación nunca aparece. En este libro encontramos relatos de terror y de horror, ténganlo en cuenta. Algo que me gustó mucho es que los cuarenta relatos son organizados por año de nacimiento del autor. De esa manera, las primeras historias serán las más antiguas y gracias a ello tendremos la oportunidad de conocer la evolución que ha tenido la escritura a lo largo de los dos últimos siglos: Cambio de palabras, diferentes usos de signos de puntuación, etc. Para mí, este libro fue como un viaje en el tiempo del horror y el terror. Sobre los relatos, naturalmente no puedo escribir individualmente sobre cada uno de ellos porque la reseña se convertiría en un texto excesivamente extenso e innecesario. No obstante, quiero destacar mi favorito, que fue el escrito por Edward Frederic Benson, titulado «La habitación de la Torre». Este relato trata sobre un hombre que al dormir tiene repetidamente la misma pesadilla a lo largo de toda su vida. Lo anormal, es que las personas que aparecen en su sueño, inicialmente se ven jóvenes, pero van pasando los años y ellos van envejeciendo e incluso muriendo. Pero no solo eso, los diálogos son exactamente los mismos en todas las ocasiones, el lugar donde ocurren los hechos es desconocido y lo que oculta la habitación de la torre es lo que convierte ese sueño misterioso en una gran pesadilla. ¿Por qué fue mi favorito? Muy sencillo: Sentí verdadero terror y tenía miedo de seguir leyendo. ¿Quién no ha tenido esos sueños que se repiten o que reanudan donde quedaron pausados en días pasados? Pensaría que todos, y por ello me sentí completamente identificado con el personaje. Además, suelo leer siempre de noche —a veces hasta la madrugada—, por lo que pueden imaginarse como me sentí leyendo una historia sobre pesadillas justo antes de tener que dormir. Y sí se preguntan si le tengo miedo a lo que pueda soñar, la respuesta es sí, y eso se debe a que hubo una temporada donde diariamente tenía sueños horrorosos y donde sin importar lo que hiciera antes de dormir siempre me despertaba asustado. Fueron seis meses largos en donde dormir me daba miedo. En una recopilación de relatos de terror/horror el que más te perturbe debe ser elegido el mejor, por eso mi elección. Ya para finalizar quiero recomendar esta recopilación para los amantes del género o para quienes desean sumirse en él. Y recuerden: No lo lean tan rápido. Es más, si quieren léanlo como hacemos con los cuentos, tomando uno al azar solo cuando deseamos hacerlo. Sé que la película la he visto un montón de veces porque la repetían cada rato en la televisión, pero sinceramente mi memoria es pésima para recordar el argumento de las películas que observo. Desconozco si esa peculiaridad tiene nombre, pero yo la llamaré «amnesia cinematográfica». Pues bien, gracias a mi amnesia cinematográfica he tenido la oportunidad de deleitarme con una buena lectura que me ha proporcionado varias horas de intriga, acción, y un inconfundible olor a mar que mis fosas nasales detectaron constantemente tras cada página transcurrida. Lo relacionado al olor es extraño y solo lo había vivido con El perfume de Patrick Süskind, pero con Tiburón también he sentido la misma impresión: Me ha parecido interesante mencionarlo porque quizás a más lectores les suceda lo mismo. A pesar de que la historia es bastante conocida considero que vale la pena darle la oportunidad a este libro porque Peter Benchley es un gran narrador de historias de terror. Hace un tiempo cuando leí Mapas en un Espejo de Orson Scott Card, el autor estadounidense mencionaba el error en el que caen frecuentemente los escritores al transformar el terror en escenas exclusivamente amarillistas. Acostumbran al espectador a solo observar desde fuera, mirando la viscosidad y las heridas abiertas, pero no desde dentro, donde nos identificamos con los personajes y anhelamos que logren vivir. Stephen King es uno de los escritores que logra que sus lectores observen sus historias desde dentro, razón por la cual su estilo se ha vuelto un gran referente en el género del terror. Afortunadamente, Peter Benchley también posee el mismo estilo lo que permite que el lector disfrute de una lectura en la que se siente sumergido desde la primera página. La sensación que he tenido todo el tiempo es que estaba leyendo dos obras a la vez. Una obra que me contaba todo lo relacionado al tiburón, como su ferocidad o la capacidad para engañar a sus perseguidores y a la vez devorar sus presas de forma macabra y autoritaria. Pero también descubrí una obra que narraba las preocupaciones de los habitantes de aquel lugar, no por ser asesinados, sino por las problemáticas económicas que el tiburón les estaba ocasionando. Para sobrevivir en aquel sitio necesitaban obligatoriamente las ganancias del turismo, pero Martin Brody, policía y protagonista, a pesar de conocer los problemas de los habitantes no puede exponer la vida de los turistas abriendo irresponsablemente las playas. ¿Habitantes con hambre o turistas muertos? Difícil decisión, teniendo en cuenta que si no hay dinero la economía de la isla se va al suelo, pero arriesgar la vida de los turistas tampoco es moralmente correcto. Sumándose a esta problemática, conoceremos que el matrimonio de Brody tampoco anda por buen camino, siendo testigos de un triángulo amoroso atiborrado de pasión desbordada. Lo que me pareció más bizarro fue conocer la forma como pescan a los tiburones grandes. Con ellos ya no basta una simple carnada, se necesita atraerlos con tripas, sangre y mucho movimiento. Imaginar una escena en la que un tiburón que está muriendo se está comiendo sus propias tripas por el instinto de seguir comiendo es bastante turbador. Creo que me vomitaría en el acto y eso que no me considero asquiento. También debe ser muy triste presenciar personalmente esa crueldad. No obstante estas escenas ayudan a concientizarnos de que estos sanguinarios animales realmente no matan por placer, lo hacen por instinto, por necesidad de comer, porque no saben en qué momento lo volverán a hacer. A los que les gusta el pescado no les recomiendo que lo consuman mientras estén leyendo este libro, a solo que quieran vomitar. Otro aspecto que me ha parecido interesante ha sido conocer la forma tan sencilla como se puede manipular la información en un pueblo, o en una isla. En aquel entonces todos los habitantes recurrían al periódico y a la policía como fuente confiable de información, pero estas dos organizaciones internamente manipulaban las noticias para solo contar lo necesario y lo que no afectara negativamente a Amity Island, lugar donde ocurren los hechos. Mala costumbre que aunque tiene buenas intenciones sigue ocurriendo en todos los sitios de nuestro planeta, y posiblemente seguirá ocurriendo por muchos años más: Es muy fácil transmitir información falsa. Asimismo, ha sido interesante porque el autor nos da la oportunidad de leer aquellas noticias publicadas en el periódico, y como vamos conociendo las intenciones del dueño del periódico, del jefe de la policía y del alcalde entonces notar la forma como juegan con las palabras y cambian la versión de los hechos es sumamente atrapante. Los dilemas morales de Brody han sido eje principal del argumento. Un personaje que francamente es el mejor de la historia —el único por el que sentí aprecio— y que va evolucionando de manera progresiva por los peligros que va viviendo. Es valiente, es honorable, es decidido, tiene características que me gustan de las personas y por ello me ha simpatizado mucho. Contrastando con Brody, también conocemos a Matt Hooper, un hombre que ama a los peces, y que al igual que El cazador de cocodrilos está dispuesto a arriesgar su propia vida con tal de seguir viviendo su aventura. Estos dos personajes chocarán frecuentemente porque piensan y actúan muy diferente, aunque en el fondo ambas posturas son completamente comprensibles teniendo en cuenta la forma como deciden vivir su vida. Final espectacular, me ha gustado mucho. No exagero al mencionar que cuando finalicé me levanté, solté el Kindle (lo estaba leyendo allí) y empecé a aplaudir en mi habitación a las once de la noche. Quizás mi hermano que vive en la habitación contigua pensaría que ya había enloquecido, pero que me importa, el libro me gustó, volvería a aplaudir hasta en medio de un funeral. En resumen, un buen libro que vale la pena leer a pesar de que su historia es bastante conocida y popular. Es un clásico, pero es un paso obligatorio para todo amante del género del terror. ¿Lo mejor? La ambientación, el personaje principal y la cacería del tiburón. ¿Lo negativo? Sin iniciar este libro ya estaba informado de que la película protagonizada por Will Smith en el 2007, era muy diferente a la historia original presentada por Richard Matherson. Y sí, claro que hay cambios importantes, pero al comparar y analizar con minuciosidad notaremos que la diferencia no es tan drástica como inicialmente parece. La adaptación cambió el argumento original, pero mantiene los temas claves que el autor expresó en su nóvela. Soy leyenda, es una excepción, donde tanto el libro como la adaptación tienen argumentos con gran desarrollo y bases bien definidas; sin importar el triste porvenir que nos es presentado, disfrutaremos de esta historia sin dudar. La elección de vampiros en la novela y zombies en la película es correcta, debido a que los miedos que siente el público pueden variar dependiendo de la época. Así como en el siglo XX los vampiros gozaban de fama por el horror que causaban, en la actualidad muchos temen a los zombies por tantas películas apocalípticas. Si las criaturas escogidas hubieran sido otras quizás ni conoceríamos la historia. Respecto a la novela, Richard nos presenta una historia con matices dramáticos muy interesantes, que nos hace imaginar cómo sería el mundo en caso de la propagación de una enfermedad que amenaza la extinción de la raza humana. ¿Cómo el coronavirus? Si, algo así, pero más fatalista. Acompañaremos a Neville, el protagonista, en su tristeza, soledad y desesperación por enfrentarse a la cruel realidad. Neville sentirá que no tiene motivos para seguir viviendo y constantemente sufrirá por su lamentable estado a lo que llama vida. Por la pandemia que estamos viviendo en este 2020, podremos fácilmente “ponernos en los zapatos” de Neville, entenderlo y leer hasta el final su historia sin perder el interés. Soy leyenda, es una excelente opción para leer en estos tiempos de pandemia. La aventura de Neville fue interesante, la explicación del origen de la enfermedad fue correcta y me gustó que el autor nos contara la historia del pasado y el presente simultáneamente. También es muy destacable la capacidad de esta historia de hacerte reflexionar y preguntarte: ¿Qué harías si fueras el último sobreviviente de la humanidad? ¿Te esconderías en tu casa y vivirías con indiferencia el resto de tus días? ¿Buscarías formas de curar la enfermedad que el mundo sufre? ¿Asesinarías a todos y te convertirías en el rey de un mundo solitario? ¿Te rendirías? ¿Qué harías? Cada quien reaccionaría diferente, y la premisa de esta obra te da mucha curiosidad por conocer el desenlace de este panorama tan desesperanzador. Sin embargo, a pesar de las cualidades de esta obra, dos grandes defectos evitaron que calificara este libro con las cinco estrellas. El primer defecto fue la narración: Fue horrible y pésima. No todo el que crea historias sabe contarlas y Richard es un ejemplo de ello. Leer su redacción fue agobiante e insoportable. ¿Cuál fue el problema? Los signos de puntuación. Es incomprensible que en la mayor parte del texto no apareciera una coma, un punto y coma, etc., sino solo el punto y de forma muy repetida. Incluso en algunas partes, aparecen párrafos de diez o más renglones y cada dos palabras nos tropezamos con un punto. Eso me pareció desesperante y se asemeja a cuando vamos en el transporte, hay muchos vehículos y vamos avanzando diez metros por minuto. Sin exagerar, es la peor narración que he leído en mi vida. El otro defecto fue Neville. Comprendo a Neville, su situación, trastorno, aislamiento y el infierno que estaba viviendo, pero a pesar de ello, fue muy desagradable estar leyendo a un borracho que se quejaba a menudo por la impotencia de no tener sexo. ¡Que pereza de protagonista! Por Neville nunca sentí compasión o cariño y si vivía o moría no fue algo que realmente llegara a importarme. Creí que a medida que avanzarán las páginas la adrenalina de la supervivencia dotaría a Neville de rebeldía y ganas de batallar por la humanidad, pero no, que decepción de personaje. Todo el tiempo fue un perdedor depresivo y esa es la imagen que me queda de él. No sé en quien se basaría Richard para la creación de este personaje, pero en mi opinión, se equivocó completamente con la elección de las características de su protagonista. Lo irónico es que esa personalidad habría sido perfecta para un personaje secundario, ¿por qué? Porque cuando Neville entabló conversaciones su conducta ayudaba a sobresalir a los demás personajes. Es algo muy extraño, y repito que no estoy exagerando, pero sentí más curiosidad por todos los personajes, incluso el perro, que por Neville. Fue rarísimo. (view spoiler)[Si Neville tuviera un poco más de simpatía y esperanza en su personalidad, con el final mostrado este libro hubiera sido perfecto. Soy leyenda pertenecería a esos libros que te hacen llorar por los infortunios del protagonista y que se quedan grabados en nuestro corazón. Sentir agrado por el protagonista es clave para conmoverse por las situaciones adversas que se presentan, y Neville sí que las tuvo, porque ser perseguido y cazado solo por ser considerado una amenaza -a pesar de que no lo era- es algo muy cruel que lo demuestra. Esa situación me recuerda cuando perseguimos en nuestra casa a un ratón, se mata a una serpiente o se caza a un oso solo por el miedo que sentimos hacia ese animal, cuando realmente ellos nos tiene más miedo y solo intentan sobrevivir. Con otro protagonista esta obra se convertiría en uno de mis libros favoritos: Es una pena que no ocurriera así. También, pensar en la cantidad de especies que se han extinguido en este planeta, y comprender que en cada una de ellas existió una leyenda, es cruel y perturbador. Desgraciadamente, ese es el ciclo natural de la vida porque sin excepciones todas las especies desapareceremos algún día, pero a pesar de ser lógico, es un final tan triste y desesperanzador que fue inevitable no contagiarme de esa nostalgia. Claramente, puede ser una historia real y causar gran horror a quienes navegan por el mar. Para nosotros que estamos lejos de ese entorno, puede parecer absurdo imaginar que los muertos vivan o que una tripulación enloquezca de repente. Sin embargo, si viviéramos personalmente una experiencia de este tipo, probablemente nuestra opinión cambiaría e incluso enloqueceríamos, porque nuestro cerebro puede pasar de ser una gran herramienta a el arma más peligrosa que podamos encontrar. A pesar de ser el primer texto que leo del autor, reconozco que me ha gustado mucho y que sin dudar leeré más de Lovecraft en el futuro. Lo que más me gustó fue la no explicación de los hechos: A veces, las explicaciones en los libros de horror echan a perderlo todo, por lo que quedar con la incertidumbre de si todo fue una alucinación por el estado de locura de los personajes, o si por el contrario algo aterrador fue el causante de los acontecimientos, es un punto muy alto en esta corta historia. Cada lector determinará en que creer. Como cada quien tiene sus propios miedos, siempre será discutible el hecho de calificar una historia de horror. En mi caso, no siento miedo ni por la claustrofobia ni por lo sobrenatural e incluso me gustaría ver algo fuera de lo normal, por lo que nunca me sobresalté. Pero para quienes tienen alguno de estos miedos, debe ser angustioso imaginar estar en una situación similar. Por esa razón, siento que las cuatro estrellas es una calificación justa. Es imposible olvidar ese capítulo tan clásico y divertido, en el que Piolín entra a un laboratorio para descansar un poco ya que Silvestre lo está persiguiendo con frenesí para comérselo; allí, y todos recordarán, Piolín ignorando el contenido de las probetas decide tomarse lo primero que encuentra porque tiene mucha sed. No obstante, para su sorpresa, para terror de Silvestre y para nuestra diversión, Piolín sufre una metamorfosis que lo vuelve un verdadero monstruo, pasando de ser perseguido a persecutor. ¡Pobre Silvestre, siempre desee que se tragara a Piolín! Pues bien, esa caricatura al igual que muchos programas de temática similar, realmente están basados en esta historia. En la inocencia de nuestra infancia no nos preguntamos de donde se originan las historias, solo las consumimos porque son divertidas o nos gustan, pero al crecer cambia todo, crecer también consiste en descubrir el pasado de nuestra raza, y conocer a los genios que crearon lo que nos gusta, importa, o necesitamos en nuestra vida. Libros como este no pasarán de moda jamás: Es imposible, son clásicos que nacieron para perdurar por siempre. En esta ocasión, el genio se llama Robert Stevenson —famoso por su también conocidísima La isla del Tesoro— que aquí nos muestra su mejor literatura, ingenio y capacidad de construir una historia perfecta. A veces cuando pienso en la muerte, siento que es una pena que personas con una capacidad tan grande para dejar huella en la humanidad, tengan que morir. Así es la vida, y se debe aceptar nuestro destino final, pero es una pena que genios como Stevenson transiten tan poco tiempo en este mundo llamado Tierra. [image] [image] Desde los títulos de los capítulos que son bastante aclaratorios y que encienden la chispa de nuestra curiosidad, hasta la perfecta estructura del libro que consta de tan solo diez capítulos, hacen de esta lectura una historia adictiva que nos querremos comer de un solo bocado. Naturalmente, como ya conocemos por adaptaciones, caricaturas y demás el contexto de la historia, entonces será predecible lo que encontraremos en las páginas; no obstante eso deja de importar, porque empezamos a sentir curiosidad por la forma cómo se desarrollará la trama, y también por los motivos, historia y pensamientos que llevaron al científico a realizar su experimento. Lo mejor es que entre más avanzan las páginas más interesante se torna el libro, y este efecto no termina sino hasta cuando aparecen ante nuestros ojos la palabra «Fin». Las explicaciones, dudas o intrigas quedan perfectamente explicadas, e incluso me atrevo a decir que hace mucho no leía un final tan bien planteado y presentado como el que Stevenson nos regala en esta historia: Una real obra maestra. Los personajes han estado bien elaborados, pero naturalmente toda la atención se la roba el Dr. Jekyll. El Dr. Jekyll es el claro ejemplo de que podemos llenar nuestros cerebros de miles de conocimientos, obtener diplomas, superar estudios y ser distinguidos por nuestro trabajo, pero si no somos capaces de —o no intentamos— buscar un espacio para aprender a conocer nuestras debilidades, avaricias, maldad oculta en el interior, y deseos más oscuros, entonces tarde que temprano sentiremos tentaciones, que si no sabemos controlar, nos llevarán a nuestra inevitable perdición. Si no evolucionamos, si no controlamos esa bestia interior que busca destrucción, nos transformaremos en una clase de putrefacción sin valor; en ese momento las piedras tendrán más valor que nosotros mismos. El Dr. Jekyll, y su doble personalidad, demuestran claramente que nunca dejaremos de tener maldad en nuestros corazones, por lo que lo importante es tomar el control de las decisiones de nuestra vida. ¿Cómo pueden nuestras decisiones afectar a los demás? ¿La conciencia nos castigará por los actos inmorales de nuestra irresponsabilidad? ¿Qué ganaremos, qué perderemos? Eso sí, quiero aclarar que no juzgo las decisiones del Dr. Jekyll porque cualquier persona, en una situación similar, podría tomar el mismo camino. Reconocer que sé es viejo, no debe ser fácil; reconocer que no tenemos salud para movernos como antes, tampoco debe ser sencillo; y tener a nuestro alcance la posibilidad de probar un experimento revolucionario, debe producir mucha tentación en nuestros pensamientos. Realmente, este personaje es una genialidad, psicológicamente es muy interesante para analizarlo. Asimismo, esta historia es interesante para meditar sobre los riesgos de usar la ciencia con irresponsabilidad. Sí, se deben hacer miles de experimentos para progresar como humanidad, pero el problema es cuando se experimenta sin ser prudentes; el problema es cuando la obsesión de un descubrimiento o avance científico lleva a la humanidad a actuar con histeria. Esas ansias de tener fama, de «ser alguien en la vida», de «ser los primeros», de «ser más poderosos», pueden producir más daño y consecuencias que las buenas intenciones. Reconozco que hay situaciones que necesitan soluciones inmediatas, pero es un gran problema que siempre se requiera para todo, ese tipo de soluciones. Las respuestas rápidas traen errores, y esos errores traen más problemas: Es un ciclo interminable. Esta obra siempre se clasificará como una historia de terror, pero también podría clasificarse como una seria crítica hacia la irresponsabilidad científica y a la locura de la curiosidad. En resumen, una historia que me ha dejado completamente satisfecho en todos los aspectos (Prosa, argumento, personajes, ritmo y final), y que me incita a leer más obras del autor. Llevó cuatro escritos leídos de Stevenson —El diablo de la botella, La isla del tesoro, El ladrón de cadáveres, y este libro—, y en todos he finalizado muy complacido por el contenido. En este momento me siento tan a gusto con el autor, que incluso surge en mí, el deseo de repetir La isla del tesoro que ya he leído dos veces anteriormente. Sería ilógico no recomendar a uno de mis autores favoritos, sería ilógico después de todo lo escrito no puntuar esta obra con cinco estrellas, sería ilógico que esta historia no se fuera directo a mis favoritos. Hasta el día de hoy no conocía sobre la familia de Stephen King. En este libro no se habla de ella, pero en la parte final donde aparece información sobre los autores sentí curiosidad por investigar sobre Joe Hill, uno de los autores, porque allí se menciona que él fue el creador de Locke & Key, serie que me encantó. Luego al buscar fotos en internet, me sorprendí por la similitud que tiene con King, incluso en su mirada. Intrigado por la curiosidad, investigué más y más hasta que descubrí que realmente Joe Hill es el hijo de King; asimismo, me enteré que tanto la esposa de King como su otro hijo también son escritores. Inicio esta reseña de forma tan peculiar para resaltar que, en el caso de Joe, ha aprovechado muy bien tener a un maestro como King a su lado para crear buenas historias. Sé que este libro lo hicieron juntos, pero el guión realizado en Locke & Key habla mucho de su trabajo. En la hierba alta, es una historia de horror (creí que era de terror, pero efectivamente es de horror), que produce desde angustia en el inicio, hasta una repulsión tremenda por el desenlace de la misma. Desde el inicio, como lector sabes que los personajes no tienen que meterse en la hierba porque pasará algo horrible, por lo que sentirás esa angustia por evitar descubrir la verdad. Sin embargo, a medida que avanzan las páginas y se va aclarando la situación, ese sentimiento será reemplazado por la intriga de conocer si se van a morir los personajes o si por el contrario saldrán vivos de su percance. Lo mejor sin ninguna duda es el final, del cual obviamente no diré nada al respecto; lo único que mencionaré es que es impactante debido a la crueldad presentada. La prosa naturalmente fue muy buena como nos tiene acostumbrados King, aunque hubo algunas frases que no aportaron nada a la historia ni al contexto; fueras pocas, pero hubieron. Omitiendo ese detalle, en estas pocas páginas, Stephen y Joe nos presentan violencia, horror, incertidumbre, ansiedad, desesperación y un desconcierto total por los misterios que ocurren en la hierba. No le doy las cinco estrellas porque la relación entre los dos hermanos me pareció molesta y hasta anormal: Son tan unidos que llegan hasta incomodar, o por lo menos a mí sí me ocurrió. Pero los personajes no están nada mal porque tienen un buen desarrollo y los sentiremos reales como todos los personajes que crea King. La lección que me queda de esta lectura es que no debemos ayudar a los demás, cuando están en peligro, si tenemos que arriesgar nuestra propia vida; y más, cuando se trata de buscar a alguien perdido en la hierba, en un lugar el cual desconocemos. ¡No lo hagan nunca! Leí Coraline, porque nunca había leído una obra de Neil Gaiman y al escuchar tantas cosas buenas de él, decidí darle una oportunidad con una historia conocida, para conocer que sensaciones me dejaba. Pero la verdad, no me gusto en lo absoluto. Realmente, no me produjo nada. Personajes muy mal desarrollados; extraños y sin personalidad. Ni siquiera los padres de Coraline tienen un nombre en la historia. La narración fue bastante aburrida y aunque sé que es un libro para niños, también necesita lógica; y este mundo creado por Gaiman no la tenía. La historia también es clasificada en la categoría de horror, pero no lo hay. De hecho, el mayor peligro al que se enfrentó Coraline fue estar encerrada en un armario. Lo único que destaco es la astucia de Coraline al final, para engañar la mano y encerrarla en el pozo, pero del resto no hay nada que destacar. No parece una historia hecha para niños, sino hecha por niños. Con eso lo digo todo. No sé si todos los libros de Gaiman tengan ese estilo, pero si es así, quedo perplejo. Audio reseña aquí La mayor parte de los secuestros que se generan en el mundo son realizados para obtener dinero a cambio, para prostituir a sus víctimas, por venganzas, o simplemente por psicopatía del criminal. Ser secuestrado es sinónimo de vivir en una condición indigna y deplorable, y es algo que no debería ocurrir en ningún país del mundo. Pero, ¿qué pasaría si te encontraras un libro con este tema principal, y en vez de sentir compasión por el rehén, te recorriera por tu mente una extraña sensación de morbo por seguir conociendo más y más atrocidades realizadas por la antagonista de esta historia? Aunque parezca un disparate, no lo es. Eso, exactamente, es lo que viví y sentí tras leer esta maravillosa obra de Stephen King. Tiene escenas tan macabras, pero a la vez tan extraordinarias, que es inevitable no confundir la maldad con la genialidad. Soy consciente de que lo que voy a escribir es imprudente, teniendo en cuenta que me falta leer muchas obras muy distinguidas de este autor, como It, El resplandor o la saga de La Torre Oscura, pero sinceramente, teniendo en cuenta la calidad de esta obra, me atrevería a decir que acabo de leer la mejor obra de Stephen King. ¡Alucinante! Todo comenzó hace unos meses cuando intentaba decidir mi próxima lectura. Mis opciones eran El padrino de Mario Puzo, El nombre de la rosa de Umberto Eco y, justamente, El resplandor de Stephen King. Tres nóvelas muy famosas, con un número de páginas similar, que observaba con detenimiento y titubeo porque sentía una gran ansiedad por leer esas historias en ese mismo instante, pero no lograba decidir cuál leer primero. Eso es algo que me ocurre frecuentemente y por ello intento premeditar mis próximas lecturas con anterioridad, pero en esa ocasión lo olvidé, mi cerebro se bloqueó y la elección esperada nunca apareció. Esa noche tanto sería mi coraje por culpa de mi indecisión que finalmente decidí no leer absolutamente nada. Sin embargo, la vida y los libros siempre tienen hermosas sorpresas en el momento más inesperado. Esto, porque aquella noche cuando guardaba aquellas obras, mis ojos se ubicaron en Misery y entonces minutos más tarde desaparecieron mis penas, y todo porque sin darme cuenta empezaría a leer esta historia con muchísima avidez. Curiosamente, en este mismo instante que estoy haciendo esta reseña, recuerdo que aún no leo aquellas obras que pensaba leer primero. Así son los libros, así es la vida de un lector. Fue una historia que desde el inicio me atrapó. En estas primeras páginas se cuenta sobre el estado en trance que vive el protagonista de la historia, Paul Sheldon, después de sufrir un grave accidente de tránsito. Paul, siente que se está muriendo, y desde su estado delicado de salud, empieza a narrar de una manera increíble exactamente lo que está viendo y sintiendo en aquellos momentos. Desde ese preámbulo, el libro se ganó completamente mi atención porque descubrí que este personaje que usa Stephen, que por cierto es un escritor, tenía vida propia. Y sí, lo sé, Stephen King es un genio para crear personajes y hacerlos parecer reales en todas sus historias, pero este personaje es muy diferente, es único. Una cosa es que Stephen te narre desde el personaje las acciones que él realiza y combinándolo con sus conversaciones consiga armonizar su prosa para no hacerla pesada, pero otra muy diferente es que el personaje piense por sí mismo, imagine, deduzca lo que está ocurriendo, saque sus propias conclusiones y además transmita de una forma tétrica el dolor, el sufrimiento, el miedo, la angustia y el amor por su trabajo de una manera increíble. Paul Sheldon no es un personaje con frases épicas para rememorar, pero sí es uno que logra interpretar perfectamente el rol de escritor, ayudando a que el lector comprenda todo lo que tiene que esforzarse y vivir un autor para crear tan solo una sola obra. Como lectores muchas veces ignoramos y olvidamos que escribir no es fácil, por ello, libros como este nos sirven para comprender a esas personas que se dedican horas, semanas, meses y años intentando crear con lógica y con muchísima imaginación, una historia que pueda gustarle a sus lectores. Sí, el libro es de horror, pero incluso en la oscuridad hay luz, en la pobreza hay bondad, y en una historia de un secuestro hay belleza por el amor hacia nuestros amigos de papel. ¿Pero saben que es lo mejor? Que Paul Sheldon no es lo más sobresaliente de este libro. A pesar de que hay tanto por destacar de este personaje, lo mejor —sin duda alguna— se llama Annie Wilkes. Ella, es una de las mejores antagonistas que he conocido en mi vida. Es una mujer desquiciada, cruel, fría, sanguinaria y torturadora, pero a pesar de todo —y como pasa con muchísimos villanos— su comportamiento y proceder tiene una razón de ser. Aunque parezca un disparate, en el cerebro de Annie asesinar no es sinónimo de maldad, es ayudar a los demás a que puedan descansar del horrible mundo en el que vivimos. ¿Y saben qué? Por momentos no puedo negar que a veces sí le doy la razón a ella. Aun así, no es lo mismo asesinar por un código moral, que torturar física y mentalmente a tus presas; por lo tanto, la mejor frase que puede describir a Annie Wilkes es “Esa maldita perra está loca”. Espero no encontrarme nunca una persona como ella en mi vida, ¡Qué miedo daría tan solo conversar con alguien así! Ahora bien, dos excelentes personajes con pensamientos tan diferentes ¿qué tienen en común? Esa respuesta se llama Misery. Misery, es un personaje femenino de una serie de libros que crea Paul Sheldon y que son muy populares en todo el mundo. El problema, es que Paul —al igual que Arthur Conan Doyle con su famosísimo Sherlock Holmes— está cansado de su personaje, y no soporta escribir más sobre ella por lo que ha decidido acabar con su personaje más popular. Su desagrado se debe a que las obras donde Misery no tiene aparición no son tenidas en cuenta, y Paul quiere ser reconocido por algo más que ser el creador de aquella emblemática mujer. Pero, Paul tiene un problema mucho más grande, y ese problema es que después de su accidente de tránsito aparece en casa de Annie Wilkes, quien dice ser su fan número uno, justamente por crear Misery. ¿Cómo se llevarán ellos dos? Eso es lo interesante del libro, descubrirlo. Quizás pueden sospecharlo, pero ni se imaginan las locuras que ocurren en aquella casa. En cuanto a la prosa también me gustó demasiado. Aquí, Stephen usa capítulos cortos —como en 22/11/63— por lo que resulta muy atractivo para que el lector no detenga su lectura nunca. Pasa una hora y no lo notas, pasan dos y te emocionas, pasan tres y pierdes el control: Es una locura. Además, escribir una historia con capítulos cortos por lo general convierte un libro que puede ser denso, en uno ligero y muy adictivo, por lo que esta historia se lee rapidísimo a pesar de sus 400 páginas. Otro aspecto interesante de la prosa, son las secciones donde se presentan fragmentos de las nóvelas de Paul Sheldon. Estos capítulos son muy especiales, porque allí Stephen cambia completamente su estilo literario, e incluso no parecen escritas esas páginas por él, sino por el mismísimo Paul Sheldon. Hacer algo así es muy difícil, pero aquí, este autor, demuestra su verdadero don para escribir. Es un verdadero genio. Debo reconocer que en algunos capítulos creí que la historia venía de más a menos, y que la obra se había transformado de un libro de terror a uno de misterio. Pero, una vez seguí avanzando, entendí que solo eran páginas de transición porque más adelante, en el último tercio, todo vuelve a ser tan impactante y terrorífico como en capítulos pasados. Asimismo, también confieso que en las primeras páginas no sabía si pensar que Paul era un visionario, o si realmente esa era su manera de analizar la situación. Inicialmente, creí que esa actitud de Paul sería una falla, pero después me quedó claro que no. Son pequeños detalles que podrían considerarse como «defectos», pero son tan insignificantes que me parece increíble que no haya logrado encontrar un desperfecto importante en algún aspecto de esta novela. Realmente Stephen ha hecho un trabajo de otro nivel, obras así son muy difíciles de igualar o superar. A veces pienso que es más difícil dar una opinión neutral, y sin ofender, sobre un libro que no me ha gustado, pero luego, en ocasiones como esta, reflexiono y comprendo que no siempre es así. Esta novela me ha encantado, pero he sufrido muchísimo, pero muchísimo intentando escribir sobre este libro tan espectacular, y todo porque la sola mención de esta historia —o de alguno de los personajes— me hace sentir la necesidad de empezar a decir spoilers sin control. Créanme, es muy difícil controlarme, intentar reprimir palabras es una gran tortura; es tan difícil, que dos días después de terminar de leerlo intenté recomendárselo a mi hermano, pero sin querer resulté contándoselo todo: Lo siento querido hermano. Sé que Misery es una película muy famosa de 1990 y que quizás muchos conocen la historia por aquella cinta, pero ni así hay justificación para hacerle spoilers a aquellos (as) que por diferentes motivos nunca vieron la película y que no conocen absolutamente nada de esta novela. Por lo tanto, para aquellas personas quiero recomendarles que no vean la película, no sin antes leer este libro. En mi caso, yo nunca vi la película porque de pequeño en mi hogar solo teníamos un televisor y no solíamos observar películas de terror/horror por el miedo a soñarnos pesadillas. Pero, inmediatamente cuando finalicé esta lectura, busqué la película por internet, la descargué, la vi y aunque no puedo negar que es una gran adaptación, sinceramente no tiene comparación con este libro: El libro es mil veces mejor, así de simple. La otra recomendación es para aquellos que jamás han leído a Stephen King, pero que sienten interés por hacerlo para conocer al “amo del terror”. Sé que este autor tiene bastantes obras, y ante un catálogo tan grande es muy difícil elegir cuál leer, pero, si lo que buscan es una historia que los atrape, que los impacte, y que sea fácil y adictiva de leer, entonces este libro es lo que están buscando. No se arrepentirán, se los prometo, no se arrepentirán ni un solo segundo. Termino completamente satisfecho, lo releeré en el futuro un sinfín de veces, y naturalmente seguiré leyendo muchas de las obras de Stephen King. Sé que muy probablemente ninguna de sus obras me hará sentir lo que he vivido con esta lectura, pero aún hay un camino largo por explorar y sé que voy a disfrutar sus demás obras. Este libro podría convertirse en la mejor lectura del año de cualquier lector del mundo. Es increíble el talento que posee Stephen King para escribir. Cada parte, cada escena, cada frase, todo, todo es espectacular en este libro. Mi libro favorito de este gran autor estadounidense seguirá siendo Misery, por la crueldad y giros inesperados del argumento; no obstante, esta historia ha llegado a mi vida para robarme una parte de mi alma e instalarse directamente en mi corazón. Es muy, pero muy probable, que si hubiera leído primero esta obra antes que Misery, mi elección de «libro favorito» sería completamente diferente. ¿Qué me ha gustado del libro? Me ha gustado absolutamente todo. De inicio a fin. Desde la primera palabra, hasta el último renglón, todo, absolutamente todo me ha cautivado y me ha producido un montón de sentimientos. Siempre me gusta sentirme agradecido por la oportunidad de leer libros como este; libros, que me ayudan a descubrir esa faceta tan sensible que poseo. Esa sensibilidad en años anteriores me daba pánico expresarla por miedo al ridículo, pero ahora, con obras tan dramáticas, melancólicas, pero a la vez tan preciosas como esta, puedo lograr sentir millones de emociones que me erizan hasta el último vello de mi cuerpo y es completamente inevitable no expresar lo que hay dentro de mí. Esta historia la recordaré eternamente y será una de las recomendaciones que siempre mencionaré a cualquier persona que se interese por la lectura. Cuando lees no es fácil resultar enganchado desde el inicio, pero aquí lo viví desde el mismísimo prólogo en el cual el autor nos explica la estructura de la historia, y la forma como fue publicada. La milla verde se publicó de forma periódica en seis entregas, una parte a la vez, asemejándose al modo con el que Charles Dickens presentó sus historias en su época. Más que una estrategia de marketing, fue una apuesta sin expectativas, pero que resultó convirtiéndose en uno de los mejores trabajos de King. Para aquellos lectores que siguieron con fidelidad —en tiempo real— la publicación de esta historia debió ser completamente torturante leer una de aquellas partes, y después tener que forzosamente esperar a la siguiente publicación. Este estilo de estructura le ha proporcionado a La milla verde la oportunidad de no poseer escenas de transición, debido a que cada entrega debía presentar un momento impactante y escenas súper interesantes que atraparan al lector y lo siguieran convenciendo de buscar la futura entrega. Para hacernos a la idea es como si un mangaka, en vez de publicar su manga capítulo tras capítulo, decidiera lanzar un volumen a la vez. Angustiante debieron ser las horas de espera para los lectores, aunque interesantes para reflexionar, crear teorías y conversar con amigos, sobre el futuro y resolución de la triste historia que ocurre en la penitenciaria Cold Mountain. Es una suerte que este libro se publicara con este estilo porque nos permite conocer la prosa más seductora pero ligera de Stephen King. Este es el libro de King más sencillo de leer con el que me he topado de momento, y soy consciente que en sus demás obras no encontraré algo similar. Aquí las descripciones son pulcramente estilizadas, permitiendo un mayor desarrollo de los personajes que parecen tener vida propia, y también a todas las escenas que se vuelven en un aspecto muy importante del libro. Son importantes porque cada una ofrece una enseñanza, un sentimiento, una reflexión, como lo es por ejemplo la perspectiva interior de una penitenciaría, o los abusos que se cometen en un asilo de ancianos. Sobre el estilo también es importante recalcar la gran dinámica de finalizar cada parte con un momento crítico o emotivo, para luego recapitular con estilo y calidad la continuación inmediata en los primeros párrafos de la siguiente parte. Realmente es un estilo literario que me ha quedado gustando mucho, por lo que me gustaría repetir la experiencia con otros autores, sin importar que tuviera que leer en inglés. Algo que me ha encantado y sorprendido a la vez es la combinación de oscuridad y luz que presenta esta historia. La maldad representa la oscuridad; la ternura a la luz. Imaginar una penitenciaría atiborrada de terribles criminales nos hace imaginar que encontraremos personajes groseros, vulgares, y completamente corrompidos por sus crímenes. Sin embargo, es una sorpresa encontrar en algunos condenados una luz de nobleza, bondad, amor y ternura, que podría no corresponder con las expectativas, pero que resulta demostrando una gran verdad en la vida: Estamos compuestos de varias facetas que se contradicen entre sí, como la perversidad y la nobleza. Quizás nunca seremos completamente malévolos por más odio que lleguemos a sentir; quizás, cada persona posee en el fondo de su alma una chispa que al encender logra transformarnos completamente, erradicando la maldad de nuestro corazón, embriagándonos de amor. Quizás estar en una cárcel, cerca de nuestra propia ejecución, logra alterar nuestra mente positivamente. Cada uno de los criminales de este libro han llegado a la penitenciaria Cold Mountain por cometer crímenes atroces, pero a pesar de conocer su inevitable final, procuran vivir sus últimos días pacíficamente, recordando su pasado, reflexionando, hablando con los guardias, distrayéndose, etcétera: Conocer que moriremos pronto nos obliga a cambiar nuestras prioridades más inmediatas. Obviamente, no todos los criminales serán así, por lo que disfrutaremos de una interesante gama de matices, distintas personalidades. A la vez, descubriremos que en esta historia los guardias también son diferentes, por lo que igualmente conoceremos el contraste de un buen guardia que intenta mantener un ambiente tranquilo en las celdas, sin llegar a ser permisivo, con otro que es adicto al sufrimiento ajeno y que aprovecha cada oportunidad para maltratar a los presidiarios. Esa combinación de luz y oscuridad provoca al lector que por momentos sienta repulsión por las injusticias y maldad expuesta, pero en otras ocasiones tristeza por la ejecución de personajes con los cuales se resulta encariñando. El enfrentamiento entre el bien y el mal siempre se llevará a cabo en cualquier parte del mundo, pero leer este libro nos ayuda a tener la pequeña esperanza de que en los lugares menos inesperados pueden desarrollarse escenas tiernas y amorosas, que permiten pequeñas victorias del bien sobre el mal. No todo está perdido, no todo es tan malo, a veces se nos olvida que es igual de fácil hacer el bien, que el mal. Los personajes han sido excelentes, cada uno tiene su historia muy bien desarrollada, personalidades claramente definidas, e incluso Cascabel, un pequeño ratón, resulta siendo muy importante en esta obra. Sobre los personajes no hay ninguna queja: Los buenos han representado bien su papel; los malos igualmente haciéndose odiar profundamente. Mi personaje favorito ha sido Cascabel, no me queda la menor duda. Su inocencia le ha otorgado mucha belleza, y a la vez tristeza a esta historia. Cada ejecución ha sido tremenda, la ambientación fue tan perfecta que sentí como si estuviera allí observando la muerte de cada preso, y me dolió mucho pensar en el sufrimiento y miedo que iban sintiendo los criminales una vez llegaba su momento de irse para siempre de este mundo. Cada ejecución tiene tanta mística que incluso los guardias también sufren por hacer su trabajo. Es su trabajo, deben hacerlo, y no pueden renunciar porque fue una época difícil para conseguir empleo, pero asesinar a una persona tampoco es fácil de procesar para ellos. Técnicamente están cumpliendo muy bien su trabajo, pero moralmente los afecta demasiado seguir en ese cargo. No es fácil cuando la conciencia nos recuerda a cada segundo que está mal asesinar a otro ser, que no tenemos derecho a jugar a ser dioses, y que nuestra alma siempre permanecerá sucia por lo acontecido. Y sobre el final, lo único que tengo que decir es que ha sido completamente conmovedor. El autor eligió la parte final para presentar muchas escenas tristes y lo hace de forma consecutiva, por lo que no nos da tiempo de recuperarnos de las lágrimas del anterior suceso. Todo se acumula, te genera tristeza, nostalgia, y te sientes impotente porque quisieras cambiar las injusticias que existen en el mundo. En la mayor parte del libro King te hace sufrir con ciertos dolores físicos que padecen los personajes, pero, en la parte final, te hace sufrir con los dolores emocionales del protagonista. Es uno de los mejores finales que he leído en mi vida. Ya para terminar, quiero expresar que este libro se ha vuelto aún más especial para mí, debido a que con esta obra he estrenado mi Kindle que me animé a comprar en los primeros días de febrero. Leer físicamente un libro siempre es genial, no lo niego, pero es bueno adaptarnos a las lecturas digitales: No todo lo podemos adquirir físicamente. Realmente ha sido un estreno maravilloso, perfecto, mágico. En resumen, una obra recomendada para todo lector. Prosa, personajes, estilo de la obra, todo ha sido genial, y seguramente nunca se arrepentirán de tomar este libro y devorárselo. La manera de comportarse de este sujeto, es de alguien paranoico que maltrata a los seres que él considera indefensos (animales y a su esposa), simplemente, porque como tiene mucho odio e ira acumulada necesita desquitarse con alguien. Solo que la manera de hacerlo es de un total demente. Como la idea de este relato es justamente dejarnos impresionados por leer algo horroroso, pues naturalmente la calificación tiene que ser de cinco estrellas. No me queda la menor duda. La única recomendación, es que lean “El Gato Negro” de noche, así “disfrutarán” más el relato. ...more |

Sin embargo, tras revisar mis anotaciones y reflexionar sobre ellas, llegué a la conclusión de que es un buen libro pero sin exagerar. Es un libro que tiene aspectos muy positivos y que hacen que disfrutemos mucho de esta historia. Entre esos detalles está la narración que es impecable, observar el uso del método de deducción pero esta vez no solo por Holmes sino también por Watson, el ambiente misterioso y hasta por momentos terrorífico que se logra sentir en la mayor parte de las páginas, la inteligencia del antagonista, los sucesos sin explicaciones e incluso ver a Sherlock Holmes desorientado y equivocándose. ¿Por qué es un aspecto positivo que Sherlock Holmes se equivoqué? Sherlock Holmes es un gran personaje del que disfrutamos sus deducciones y comentarios en todo momento. Sin embargo, en mi opinión, creo que Arthur Conan Doyle se equivocó al crear a Sherlock tan superior con referencia a cualquier otro personaje. Sherlock tiene una capacidad de inteligencia descomunal que hace ver el 90% de sus casos sencillos. Prácticamente no tiene competencia con ningún otro y eso provoca que como lectores ya presagiemos el final de cada relato o la manera como lo resolverá. Muchos de los casos presentados por Arthur Conan si tuvieran un poco más de tensión, dificultad y momentos de crisis, habrían conseguido ser excelentes, pero por culpa de la supremacía de Sherlock esos relatos no pasaron de ser aceptables. De hecho, ahora entiendo porque Arthur Conan Doyle quería matar a su personaje. Debió ser frustrante para él, tener planes de una historia diferente, pero no poder realizarla por lo difícil que era controlar un personaje como Sherlock Holmes. Un personaje que pareciera tener vida propia. Este libro es interesante justamente por esa desorientación de Holmes. Además, todo se vuelve aún más intrigante debido a que Sherlock no aparece casi por ochenta páginas. Sin estos dos detalles esta historia no pasaría de ser una historia ordinaria. En cuanto a lo negativo, resalto que en esta obra no existe mucha variedad con referencia a otros relatos. Varios elementos usados en otros casos son empleados aquí nuevamente, por lo que no llegué a sentir diferencia entre leer este libro y los relatos de Las Aventuras de Sherlock Holmes o Las Memorias de Sherlock Holmes. Siento que le faltó originalidad en el desarrollo de algunas partes de la historia; no en todas, porque hay partes nuevas e interesantes, pero creo que pudo ser mejor. Leer El Sabueso de los Baskerville fue como leer otro relato pero con más extensión. Sin embargo, y a pesar de sus puntos negativos logré disfrutar esta lectura. Quizás, mí inconveniente con esta obra, es que tenía las expectativas muy altas porque había leído muchos comentarios positivos. Creo que si este libro fuera el primero que leyera de Sherlock Holmes estaría completamente encantado, pero como vengo de leer más de veinte casos de este personaje, simplemente pocos detalles me sorprendieron. Un libro difícil de calificar Segundo libro de la tetralogía del Cementerio de los Libros Olvidados. Cuando finalicé La Sombra del Viento, resulté mu Un libro difícil de calificar Segundo libro de la tetralogía del Cementerio de los Libros Olvidados. Cuando finalicé La Sombra del Viento, resulté muy satisfecho de lo que leí porque la calidad de esa nóvela fue tan grande que quería leer más de lo mismo. Eso causó que mis ansias de continuar con el siguiente libro fueran tantas, que mis expectativas estuvieron muy altas en este segundo volumen. Sin embargo, una vez leído El Juego del ángel, me siento confundido al momento de calificarlo, porque aunque me gustó, no llegué a conmoverme o emocionarme como pensaba que ocurriría. La historia no es mala, pero esa conexión que esperamos tener al momento de leer, nunca la sentí en este caso. El arranque del libro fue muy bueno. Allí, volveremos a disfrutar de la especialidad de Zafón de crear buenos relatos, ya que en esta ocasión se cuenta el pasado del protagonista, David Martin, y notaremos una atracción inmediata debido a su relación con la librería Sempere. La sola mención de la librería nos impulsa a seguir leyendo para saber más y más. Sin embargo, el problema del libro, empieza cuando notamos que el tema central de la nóvela no es tan enigmático como lo imaginábamos, reduciendo considerablemente el interés por conocer la historia oculta que nos presenta el autor. Esto sumado, a que las similitudes que tiene esta obra con La Sombra del Viento, nos hace pensar por momentos que este libro es solo una repetición de lo leído anteriormente. Detalles como una casa terrorífica, el protagonista visitando seres desconocidos para averiguar un misterio sobre alguien muerto, personajes con fragmentos de una historia incompleta, historias que se repiten, etc., perjudican tanto la sorpresa como la sensación de creer que estamos leyendo algo distinto. En cuanto a los personajes, veremos a seres bastante sombríos, tristes, solitarios y con tendencia al suicidio. Incluso David Martin es así. A David, le agregó las peculiaridades de ser un cobarde, estar desesperado y ser muy descortés a la hora de tratar a las personas. En general, son personajes de los que nunca te apegarás, porque esa negatividad y forma de pensar te aburrirá, tal y como sucede cuando aparece en nuestras vidas una persona con esas características y no la puedes soportar. El único personaje agradable es Isabella, pero de ella hablaré más adelante. Ahora, si el 99% de los personajes son deprimentes, ¿qué clase de historia creen que podría surgir? Pues bien, El Juego del ángel resultó ser una historia oscura, con tintes sobrenaturales, fantasmales y hasta diabólicos, donde sentimos un vacío extraño y una oscuridad que te impregna a medida que vas leyendo los pensamientos y aventuras de cada sujeto de esta novela. Nunca me importó si alguien moría o vivía y eso se debe al desamor que poseían los personajes. Esto es lo que hace este libro especial, crear un ambiente tan pesimista también es algo muy meritorio. Pero de todo lo relacionado con esta historia, definitivamente lo mejor es Isabella Gispert. Isabella es una joven que a pesar de sufrir también un poco la melancolía que envuelve a todos los personajes, es la luz en la oscuridad. Isabella es atrevida, rebelde, muy sarcástica y sincera, pero también es muy talentosa, inteligente e incluso cariñosa. Todo el tiempo me hizo reír con sus comentarios satíricos y cada vez que aparecía en escena, las páginas se me hacían muy cortas. Fue muy agradable conocerla y en pocas palabras me encantó, me casaría con una mujer así. De no ser por ella la calificación de este libro sería 3,5. También debo destacar el rol de Andreas Corelli. Un personaje enigmático, oscuro y malévolo, que produce miedo, es inexplicable y de quien espero encontrar más respuestas en los otros libros. La maldad que rodea este personaje es muy grande. En cuanto al final es un poco confuso y dependerá de la interpretación del lector. A mí me parece adecuado, solo que todo el tiempo estuve esperando una historia que nunca llegó; pero de todos modos es un final interesante y original. En resumen, buen libro con un toque gótico que nos llamará la atención, pero que no supera en ningún momento a su predecesor La Sombra del Viento. Buen libro. Lo primero y más importante que debo recomendar a quienes están interesados en leer a Edgar Allan Poe, es que primero investiguen sobre la vida y estilo literario del autor. Claramente, no es obligatorio, ya que antes de empezar esta obra —en mi caso— había leído dos o tres historias de Poe, llegándolas a disfrutar sin ningún problema. Sin embargo, podremos vivir una experiencia diferente si conocemos sobre los problemas que Poe tuvo con el alcohol, su descontento con Estados Unidos, su difícil niñez, etc. Asimismo, comprender su estilo literario antes de leer sus cuentos, nos permitirá contemplar cada relato con otra perspectiva completamente diferente. En esta edición, en la parte final se presenta una historia extensa —sin exagerar— precisamente sobre la vida de Poe, por lo que yo recomiendo en caso de que tengan esta misma edición, que primero lean aquella parte y luego sí procedan a leer cada cuento. Si siguen este consejo tendrán una experiencia increíble leyendo a Edgar Allan Poe. En Cuentos macabros, encontraremos ocho relatos de Poe, en los cuales percibiremos su gran capacidad narrativa para describir lugares sombríos, así como para exponer la evolución del trastorno psicológico que puede llegar a sufrir cualquier persona ante un evento desconcertante. Si bien, muchos de sus cuentos tienen altas similitudes, ese detalle no representa un problema porque la narración de Poe no es cansina y repetitiva, sino que palabra, tras palabra, te va haciendo sentir inmerso en cada historia. Muchas veces en nuestras lecturas omitimos signos de puntuación y leemos sin detenernos, pero aquí cada coma y cada punto es clave, porque gracias a esas pausas sientes suspenso, duda, y se ve alimentada tu intriga. A Poe es recomendable leerlo despacio, disfrutando de sus analogías, de sus reflexiones, y comprendiendo que cada relato presenta horror y belleza simultáneamente. Como lo decía en el párrafo anterior, muchos de sus cuentos tienen altas similitudes. Empezando por los personajes que narran la historia, parecen todos estar basados en la propia personalidad de Poe. Son personajes que les gusta realizar actividades de contemplación, son obsesivos, sufren de adicciones, tienen problemas psicológicos, y en términos generales transforman la realidad equívocamente. ¿Es decir que están locos? Tal vez sí, pero gracias a la historia presentada de cada relato, podemos entender que sus comportamientos no son motivados por disparates, sino por análisis y pensamientos profundos que han rondado sus mentes mucho tiempo. Para hacer un ejemplo, es como si alguna persona consumiera mucho contenido relacionado a los ovnis, soñara con ellos, pensara constantemente en lo mismo, entrara en decadencia afectando todas las áreas de su vida, no se detuviera nunca, y lo siguiera haciendo por un largo periodo de tiempo; en ese caso, se produciría una obsesión que más adelante causaría un delirio sin salida: Así son los personajes de Poe. La estructura de cada cuento se asemeja bastante —Presentación de la personalidad de los protagonistas, suceso anormal que obsesiona al narrador, muerte—, y como todos se caracterizan por tener un final dramático y fatal, eso afecta el «factor sorpresa», por lo que a pesar de que disfrutemos los cuentos, el argumento se nos va haciendo más y más predecible. Vale la pena leer todos los cuentos porque cada uno trata sobre un miedo distinto, pero no hay que esperar de ellos giros inesperados, ni tampoco sentir espanto en nuestra lectura. Las ilustraciones me han encantado, y es notable la calidad del arte y talento que posee Benjamin Lacombe. Sus ilustraciones son un acompañante perfecto para leer cada relato de Poe, aunque lo que representa cada ilustración no es fiel a lo que aparece en el texto. Sí, los personajes tienen las características descritas por Poe, pero sus ilustraciones son diferentes. Eso sí, eso tampoco es un problema porque siempre da gusto mirar las creaciones de este gran ilustrador: Me encanta su arte. A continuación, y espero no extenderme demasiado, mencionaré lo más importante de cada cuento, naturalmente sin spoilers. Berenice 2/5 ⭐ Si bien los primeros cuentos de una antología suelen ser los mejores, esto no ocurre aquí. Berenice ha sido un cuento correcto, de hecho lo definiría como grotesco, y desarrolla los aspectos principales del protagonista que ya comentaba en los párrafos anteriores (Contemplación, delirio y locura). No obstante, para ser el primer libro de una antología esperaba algo más portentoso. El gato negro 5/5 ⭐ Excelente cuento que consta de una prosa adictiva, escenas macabras y eventos paranormales; todo esto contado con palabras que te generan intriga como si se tratara de un mismísimo thriller. Uno de los mejores cuentos de esta antología, y de Poe en general. Sus moralejas sobre el uso descontrolado del alcohol, y la adicción a maltratar a los demás, son muy valiosas para cualquier persona que tenga vicios. No es una historia que ayude a eliminarlos; pero sí, para comprender, que cuando las adicciones toman el control de nuestras vidas estamos destinados a la autodestrucción. La isla de las hadas 4/5 ⭐ Cortico, pero muy bonito. Más que un cuento es una metáfora sobre la alegría y la tristeza que vamos sintiendo con el paso de nuestros años. Con este cuento me ha quedado claro que Poe era capaz de escribir lo que quisiera: Es impresionante su talento. Aquí transmite sentimientos de una forma tan profunda que al describir lo bello se siente la ternura, al describir lo oscuro se siente la tristeza. Me encantó este cuento. El corazón delator 5/5 ⭐ Espectacular. Usando nuevamente la psicopatía del protagonista encontramos un relato con adrenalina, ansiedad, crimen y locura, que llega a parecerse un poco a El gato negro. Cada palabra me aceleró el pulso y me generó morbo de conocer los métodos criminales del protagonista. Una historia sobre el perfeccionismo, el peso de la conciencia, y la obsesión. Súper recomendado. La caída de la Casa Usher 3/5 ⭐ Muy buena narración que permite conectar al lector con la casa espeluznante en la que se desarrollan los hechos. No quisiera estar ni de visita en un lugar similar a la Casa Usher: ¡Qué horror! No obstante, después de una parte empecé a reírme por las situaciones que vive el protagonista, ya que la historia y las escenas se transforman en una clase de humor cruel que disfrutas por las ocurrencias que presenta el autor. Es el relato más largo del libro, pero tiene unas ilustraciones geniales que me encantaron. El retrato oval 2/5 ⭐ ¿Te imaginas entrar en un castillo abandonado, en medio de una tempestad, de noche, y que te dedicaras a observar pinturas? Si a ustedes no les da miedo imaginar esa situación, pues a mí sí, y no me gustaría vivir una situación similar. No obstante, aunque el relato es correcto por la atmósfera que se presenta, el argumento no me ha parecido interesante y ha sido sumamente predecible. Eso sí, las descripciones son muy buenas y son similares a La caída de la Casa Usher, eso es lo positivo para destacar. Morella 1/5 ⭐ Usando el parecido familiar entre madre e hija, Poe nos cuenta una historia en la que un hombre se obsesionará por la similitud que presentan ellas. La idea no es mala, aunque más que un relato de terror/horror me ha parecido simplemente un trastorno; trastorno creado debido al consumo de conocimientos inadecuados. Lo positivo es que las ilustraciones han sido geniales, y que la conversión de una situación normal (como lo es, el parecido físico que podemos llegar a tener con nuestros familiares) en algo siniestro ha sido muy original. A pesar de ello, este relato no me ha gustado. Ligeia 3/5 ⭐ Inicio tedioso, final asombroso. Al principio me costó porque Poe realizó una descripción extensa sobre un tema, y al finalizar aquella descripción comenzó otra igual de larga. Por tanto, el estilo de este cuento no me pareció agradable para leer. Sin embargo, la parte final es excelente, y es por esas páginas que vale la pena darle la oportunidad a este cuento: El final fue como un creepypasta. En resumen, ocho relatos que nos permite conocer el estilo de Poe, y nos deja con ansias de leer más historias del autor. Me siento satisfecho con el contenido, no me han gustado todos los cuentos, claro está, pero en cada uno de los cuentos de esta recopilación he logrado encontrar genialidad, talento, y una prosa narrativa increíble.
