I enjoyed this one way more than I thought I would. I'm not a chess player and was concerned that half of the book would go over my head. So, I skeptically started the audio and was very surprised to find I didn't have to know anything about chess to enjoy Beth's journey. Tense and inspiring!
I’m going to try the Netflix series and see if I like it as much. ...more

Not sure if I'm getting used to Deaver's write style, or if this one was just lacking. But I didn't find it as engaging and suspenseful as the previous three.

This felt like catching up with old friends. I love the dynamic Slaughter created between Will, Sara, Faith and of course Amanda. It’s like they come alive, but I think I say that in every review I write of this series.
Even with this very dark, disturbing, and sad topic I couldn't put down the book! Slaughter knows how to capture her audience. The tension throughout the book is palpable, the plot is riveting with shocking reveals at every unexpected point. The only part I missed was the medical side, in other words Sara’s work. I like to know what the body can tell; I like the forensics. And I feel it was missing in this book. This was more a stake-out, crazy sting board kind of book. Still brilliant, but it didn’t satisfy my forensic addiction. To be fair, Slaughter and McDermid created it, so I expect them to deliver.
I can hardly wait to meet my friends again in the new one. I know it might be a long wait.
Maybe I should consider re-reading the entire series form the start, while I wait. ...more

...more

My friend is a big Feeney fan, and I brought her this book as a birthday gift. But it looked extremely sad waiting for the weekend to come along for me to give it to her, so I stared reading it just to comfort the poor thing. It ended with me having to get an e-book copy as I didn’t finish it in time and really needed to know just exactly what was going on in Seaglass.
There seems to be a spectral theme in both the books I read of Feeney so far. Not sure if it’s her “thing” or if it was just the two books I picked-up.
I do enjoy her writing style and her characters are charmingly unique in the most unexpected ways. I might just join my friend in becoming a Feeney FAN. ...more

Fast paced and engaging with a very interesting premise.
When I saw that this is being made into a TV series, I just had to read it! One of my little quirks is to always read the book before I see the movie (or series in this case)
I really enjoyed it, even if certain elements seem a bit too unrealistic for me. (view spoiler)[Getting on to a plane and going to the one place my ”trusted” spouse seem to be avoiding and then finding all this very convenient clues just felt very unlikely to me. (hide spoiler)]
And the fact that Hannah seems to know exactly what everyone thought and felt worked a bit on my nerves, but the very engaging writing style got me through it. I would read all of Laura’s work - no matter the subject - if all is written in this style. So yes, I’ll be looking into her other books.

This was the slowest, slow burn that I ever read in my entire life. That combined with the fact that it read more like a contemporary than a Mystery really didn’t work form me. Maybe if I cared more for the characters, I would have liked it, but at times I just wanted to scream at them to get a life, grow-up and STOP lying!

In my search for new and exciting Crime procedural reads, someone somewhere recommended I read The Bone Collector. I can’t for the life of me remember who it was, but if you’re reading this: “THANK YOU SO SO MUCH!!!”
I really enjoyed this one. It was exactly what I was looking for. Unique characters, a fast pace plot and spot-on procedures that isn’t above understanding. The relationship between Rhyme and Sachs was entertaining and something I haven’t encountered before. And I just couldn’t figure out who the Bone Collector was (and for me that’s always a big plus, as I figure these things out quickly)
I’m definitely continuing with the series and I’ll be looking into Deaver’s other work.

Neverworld Wake was no different, from the get go I was intrigued and captured by the whole idea of a space between life and death where you have to make the decision you never would want to in life.

Let me start by saying this book was NOT bad, I actually enjoyed it quite a lot. Yes I know my rating doesn’t reflect that statement, but let me explain.
This book starts with a prologue that plays off in the present time. Then it jumps back 15 years and the story starts there. Now if the book just started off in the past and then jumped 15 years to the future; it would have worked for me. But the prologue spoiled everything. Form it I could figure out whom the second murder victim was; and when we jumped back to the present it took two chapters to figure out who the killer was, red herring and all. So while I really enjoyed Spindler’s writing and the overall story line, I would have given the book way more stars if the prologue didn’t exist.
I’m curious to read more of Spindler’s work to see if I might have found a new author I like. ...more

The emotional tension and mystery of where the plot might go made this a fast, intense read. I’m seeing a lot of people referring to the Max Wolfe Crime Series and how different this book is to that, so I’m intrigued to read one of Tony's other books to see how it compares. ...more
