I enjoyed this one way more than I thought I would. I'm not a chess player and was concerned that half of the book would go over my head. So, I skeptically started the audio and was very surprised to find I didn't have to know anything about chess to enjoy Beth's journey. Tense and inspiring!
I’m going to try the Netflix series and see if I like it as much. ...more

This felt like catching up with old friends. I love the dynamic Slaughter created between Will, Sara, Faith and of course Amanda. It’s like they come alive, but I think I say that in every review I write of this series.
Even with this very dark, disturbing, and sad topic I couldn't put down the book! Slaughter knows how to capture her audience. The tension throughout the book is palpable, the plot is riveting with shocking reveals at every unexpected point. The only part I missed was the medical side, in other words Sara’s work. I like to know what the body can tell; I like the forensics. And I feel it was missing in this book. This was more a stake-out, crazy sting board kind of book. Still brilliant, but it didn’t satisfy my forensic addiction. To be fair, Slaughter and McDermid created it, so I expect them to deliver.
I can hardly wait to meet my friends again in the new one. I know it might be a long wait.
Maybe I should consider re-reading the entire series form the start, while I wait. ...more

My friend is a big Feeney fan, and I brought her this book as a birthday gift. But it looked extremely sad waiting for the weekend to come along for me to give it to her, so I stared reading it just to comfort the poor thing. It ended with me having to get an e-book copy as I didn’t finish it in time and really needed to know just exactly what was going on in Seaglass.
There seems to be a spectral theme in both the books I read of Feeney so far. Not sure if it’s her “thing” or if it was just the two books I picked-up.
I do enjoy her writing style and her characters are charmingly unique in the most unexpected ways. I might just join my friend in becoming a Feeney FAN. ...more

I’m new to Deaver (this is only my second book), but boy-o-boy do I like his work. Being pretty good at figuring out plots and killers, I find it refreshing that Deaver surprise me every-time. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this streak will continue. Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs is wonderful characters that is quickly becoming friends I love spending time with. I like that Lincoln is not the direct hero here, but still ultimately without him, there would be no catching of the killers. I enjoy learning more of the forensics and procedures and appreciate Deaver’s way of explaining everything without dumbing it down. O and this book taught me so much about Lear Jets and Falcons. ...more

This was the slowest, slow burn that I ever read in my entire life. That combined with the fact that it read more like a contemporary than a Mystery really didn’t work form me. Maybe if I cared more for the characters, I would have liked it, but at times I just wanted to scream at them to get a life, grow-up and STOP lying!

This one was fast-paced, but not as gripping as I expected. While reading it the pages flew by; but once I've sat it down there were very little that compelled me to pick it up again. I felt I knew where this was going, and couldn't care less. But once I decided to sit down and finish it I was rather surprised at the ending. I usually figure out the ending quite fast and is mostly never wrong, but this one threw me way off. And that alone in my opinion deserve a star all on it's own.
I'm looking forward to reading more of Finlay's work. If this debut is anything to go by it will not disappoint....more

When you start reading a book thinking it’s a thriller but then realizing it’s more of a horror, it’s surprising how much your mindset changes because of genre.
Expecting a fast phased thriller, I was really disappointed with how excruciatingly slow this started out. But by the time I figured out it was actually more horror I was so glad I didn’t quite it. This turned out to be a good story with just enough eeriness to keep one engage and wanting to figure out the how and why…. And the ending left me with chills!
I should definitely re-read this at some stage with the correct mindset....more

Going into this book I only knew what the blurb/synopsis on the back said. And even though I'm not a fan of the apocalypse genre, this genuinely caught my attention; especially the part about little miss Wen not being at fault for what is about to happen. In my mind that most certainly placed her squarely in the middle of the thick. That, unfortunately, did not happen. Apart from the storyline not living up to my expectations; the overuse of adjective - teetering on the verge of word vomiting - just drove me up-the-wall.
All that said; I'm still intrigued by the synopsis of A Head Full of Ghosts and will most definitely give it a try when it crosses my way....more

The punch this story hold will hit all - young and old!
It’s a fast-paced, action-packed, and shows just how resourceful a mother will become to save her child. The concept of this book is brilliant and fresh. And in a genre “old as time” it is nice to come upon something new. The first part of this book was enticing and distinguished by its unique premise, but the second part just fell flat. It started off promising with a back story (view spoiler)[of two children being rescued by their father and grandfather. But somehow you just know these two kids turn into the masterminds behind the chain. (hide spoiler)] But it quickly became predictable and just too convenient for my taste. In the acknowledgment McKinty states that this was a short story converted into a novel; and in my opinion, the execution was not optimized to its fullest.
This is still a book I will recommend to everyone; because of the thought-provoking ideas in it. ...more

In the last few years, I have really come to appreciate good psychological-thrillers. Especially the ones I can't seem to figure out until the author reveals the big mystery. Alex Michaelides has officially become one of those authors; with his debut novel The Silent Patient His gripping narrative and unusual point of view deliver something I have not encountered before. Being told from a Psychotherapist perspective gave this book -in my opinion- the variation that was needed to put it at the top of this genre.

I’ve been meaning to read Downing ever since this book was first published in 2019. I’ve meticulously added all her books to my TBR each time a new one was published, but never actually picked one up until now. To think this is Downing’s debut! I can’t wait to read more.
I usually read thrillers; but I found this audio on my phone (not sure when I got it) and decided why not give it a try. And I was not disappointed. David Pittu did an excellent job to bring these characters to live. I enjoyed his narrations – even if some of his female voices got on my nerves. As for the story; even with the twist that was quite obvious I still really enjoyed it. It gave me that “different” I was seeking this entire month. Funny how it’s the last book of the month that paid off.
I’m for sure getting Downing’s other books now!...more

Every time I pick up a book by Taylor, I’m skeptical. Historical Fiction is not a genre I would call a favorite, and when I do like them, it is usually Historical Mysteries not Historical Romance. But every time I open one of her books, it’s like getting into a DeLorean and visiting the past. She writes books that makes you forget you are reading.
