This is a collection of 26 poetic essays that vary in subject from love, pain, friendship, giving and many more.
Growing up, our house was filled with Kahlil Gibran books. My parents have a huge collection of his works and have always encouraged me to give them a try. However I've always been a bit daunted and never knew exactly where to start. My mother suggested The Prophet.
I was so overjoyed when I received this copy, which came to me as a surprise.
My edition (the Alma Classics edition, published 2020) included illustrations by Gibran himself. I loved looking at them and they were such a great addiction to the poetry itself.
My heart felt full while reading this spiritual classic. The wisdom imparted spoke to me. And I feel like even if poetry isn't your thing you'd still find something in this book that speaks to you.
I highly recommend taking your time, savour it in small increments and reflect on each essay.

“Burn it! Burn it. This is where the poems are,” I say, thumping a fist against my chest. “Will you burn me? Will you burn me, too?”
Xiomara Batist“Burn it! Burn it. This is where the poems are,” I say, thumping a fist against my chest. “Will you burn me? Will you burn me, too?”
Xiomara Batista is a young girl from Harlem who feels like her voice doesn't matter. In the form of poetry, she puts all she cannot say into a beloved notebook.
When she finally accepts the invitation to her schools poetry club — Xiomara knows it won't be long before her mami finds out she isn't at church, where's she's supposed to be, but decides to take the risk anyway.
Even though I couldn't immediately relate to all that Xiomara is going through, the author made me feel Xiomara's struggles and pain through the words, straight to my bones.
Her love for words and poetry was so heartwarming. When her mami (view spoiler)[burnt her notebook I literally started crying. (hide spoiler)] That shit was intense.
The Poet X is a story written in verse. I listened to the audiobook which is narrated beautifully by the author. Elizabeth Acevedo did such a brilliant job, it made me think that authors should be narrating their own work more often!
__ I'm reading this as a huge middle finger to that guy who told me to read better poetry a few days ago. I'll read whatever poetry I damn well want, thank you...more

The writing style is like nothing I've read before. A novel written in verse. It's not just about Artemisia's story, we also get the stories of Susanna and Judith and I thought it was pretty awesome how all three stories were told.
The world will tell you not to be outraged, love. They will tell you to sit quietly, be kind. Be a lady. And when they do? Be Judith instead.
I admired that she insisted on the truth and wanted her rapist to go down for what he did. It was hard for her. Not many girls even in today's time can do what Artemisia did. She is an inspiration and I've learnt so much reading this book about being a woman.
But then, you never see the beast until he is upon you.
I just felt like the story was incomplete. When I got to the end of the book I was like: Is this it? I'll definitely be reading up more about Artemisia, I need to know how she lived the rest of her life.
There will come a day, when this horror is not the only color on your palette....more

This poetry collection was focused on the authors relationship with her mother. A relationship that was complicated and full of pain.
I liked this one better than the first collection in this series which was about being in a toxic relationship.
To drink coffee with a ghost explores the damage someone, who is supposed to love and care for you, can do.
The poems were beautiful and heartbreaking. And really captured the conflicted feelings of the author, who both hated and loved her mother.
I have been reading Lovelace's poetry collections since the first one came out and with each new release I become more and more addicted. __ My reviews for:

This collection of poems is about being in a relationship with someone you know is bad for you and realising you deserve better and finding that someone who will help you grow. These poems were all so beautiful.
The third part of poetry in this book is called sun-heart, it is about Amanda's spouse Cyrus Parker who is the author of DROPKICKromance. I'm so excited to read his collection, it will be like reading his side of the story. __ My reviews for:

A powerful conclusion to this beautiful poetry collection series. I totally would not mind if Lovelace decided to continue these books, I adore them so much.
I know this type of poetry is not everyone's cup of tea but I have come to love it and it's all thanks to Amanda Lovelace and her words.

I liked this more than the princess saves herself in this one. A very empowering collection of poems that leaves you feeling like you can conquer the universe.
