Той говори посредством маски, знамения, сънища и … кукли на конци, водени от вещ кукловод. Героите в тази руска готика са в онзи тънък промеждутък, където двата свята се пресичат. Или направо отвъд…
Детството на Петя на далечния Сахалин съвсем не е розово в заника на СССР в бедност и с баща пияница. Наред с вродената му отчужденост (вероятно лека форма на аутизъм) светът му от един момент нататък е населен единствено с кукли. В кукленският му свят нахлува и мъничката Лиза. За Петя тя е най-хубавото в пъстрия му, изумително богат свят на тъжно-смешни, винаги различни и винаги изумително проникновени сюжети за куклени представления. А кротко преживелият няколко империи и самия холокост град Лвов е декорът, сред който разцъфват тези две преплели се в една съдби.

Едва ли има руски (или рускоезичен) писател, който да се е измъкнал от лапите на мистицизма. Родената в Ташкент и заселила се в Израел Дина Рубина не прави изключение. Но нейният мистицизъм е просто воал над ужасните реалности или сивотата на обграждащия свят. Свят, в който сред хората шестват творци и сътворени, и всеки е свързан с невидими нишки към неизвестния кукловод, който майсторски ги подръпва. Актът на любовта и на сътворението се преплитат, докато се стигне до най-тежкия момент - да срежеш крепителните нишки, за да е възможна първата болезнена, но собствена крачка. И творчеството, и любовта са несъвършени, неповторими и животворни. И все пак свободният избор съществува, просто е най-трудното житейско чудо.
Наред с героите, много ми харесаха подробностите за самото кукловодство и за дебрите на Лвов през годините, както и ироничният поглед към руските и украинските евреи в днешен Израел. Творчеството с неговите сякаш разтегливи граници и понятия е особено актуално, приложено върху човешките същества - както и тънката му граница с манипулацията, с манията и с магията. Сърцеедка е Рубина, и много я заобичах, щом е успяла да събере тези две счупени, тъжни деца в книгата, и да им даде шанс в неочаквана посока.

“Wild Seed” се оказа книга, почти толкова обвита с лабиринти и мъгли, колкото навремето ми беше и “Лявата ръка на мрака” - но една идея по-интересна и близка. Женският, считан от мнозина (според мен не особено правилно в случая с Урсула Ле Гуин и Октавия Бътлър) за феминистки поглед във фантастиката, така начупва перспективата в рой ярки, огледални, неустоимо интересни, но и много хаотично накъсани и разпилени парченца от добре познатото ни огледало, че или моментално отказва читателя, или напълно го омагьосва. И Ле Гуин, и Бътлър, жонглират с толкова базови възприятия, така дълбоко вкоренени схващания - като идентичност, преходност, човечност, човечество и видове човечества, безсмъртие, пол, раса, религия, отношения и роли - че е главозамайващо. (Но Ле Гуин, по мое мнение, е доста по-скучна и даже “задръстена”). Направо води до световъртеж.
Единствената постоянна величина в сюжета е промяната. Нищо и никой не стои на едно място или едно и също. Доро е същество (човек е твърде силна дума) на близо 4,000 години и оцелява, като се вселява в чужди тела. Тези тела трябва редовно да се подменят, защото се износват. През хилядолетията той убива времето, опитвайки се чрез генетични експерименти да създаде нов подобрен клон на човечеството с представители, които да имат специални сили - телекинеза, телепатия и най-различни други суперсили. Той случайно среща първото в течение на дългото му съществуване друго безсмъртно създание - Аняу (Anyanwu). Тя е бебе в сравнение с Доро, защото е “само” на малко над 300 години. Нейната уникална дарба е превъплъщаването - тя може да се превърне в какъвто и да е човек (без значение от възраст, пол, раса и особености) или животно. За разлика от Доро, който безспирно убива, за да вземе ново тяло, тя е лечителка и обича хората около себе си, за нея те не са инструмент за убиване на хилядолетна скука. От Африканския Рог през 1690 г. до Калифорния от 1840 г. сюжетът проследява битката и неизбежната зависимост и привличане между двамата и техните потомци.
Доро и Аняу сa стихии, или “божества”, каквито се срещат във всички древни митологии - гръцка, индийска, африканска. Те не са оковани от ограниченията на монотеистичните по-късни религии с техните доктрини за морал и непристъпна, ясна, права линия между това, което следва да се счита за добро или за зло. Именно поради тази своя древност те преобръщат целия свят с неговите “неизменни” модели с главата надолу. Робството (т.е. доминациятя на база цвят) и подчинението на половината човечество (т.е. жените) към другата половина са само част от темите. И тези теми са само незначителен миг в борбата на тези две безсмъртни създания, които накрая стигат до върховното познание - че дори безсмъртието губи сили пред самотата.
Изобщо не съм сигурна, че книгата ми хареса, но в случая това не е от значение. Бътлър ме накара да чета без прекъсване и да правя паралели, сравнения или да споря с нея, или да недоумявам какво пък е решила да стовари на клетата читателска глава с поредния обрат в сюжета. Думата, с която асоциирам книгата, е “флуидност”. Стереотипите, според които всички живеем, колкото и да се различават едни от други, винаги ги считаме за неизменни. Е, не са. Бътлър така ги разчупва и рекомбинира във втрещяващи, но плашещо убедителни комбинации, че накрая спокойно можем да приемем собствената си погрешимост и ограничения. В този свят има толкова повече, отколкото се вижда с просто око. Бътлър просто показва няколко възможни вариации, провокирайки умишлено точно онова, което считаме за неизменно и неизменяемо. Но го прави с дълбока съпричастност, и - колкото и налудничаво да изглежда на пръв поглед - съвсем не безцелно.

Той импулсивно си “приватизира” героинята, която така и не стига до затвора и до официалната документация за заловените.
Супер ми допадна немският, употребяван в репликите - най-сетне сериозно отношение към главни букви и умлаути. Доста по немски се развиват и романтичните отношения - без много неясноти, без особени недомлъвки и кършене на пръсти и без ексцесии от ония по кориците с разните там петдесет или повече сиви нюанси, макар канонът да е спазен. Направо по немски чеклист. И, изненада, освен ЩАЗИ и трабантите, в играта се намеси и България, по-конкретно Созопол - китно кътче от 60-те. Е, рисърчът за България не е бил толкова детайлен (българските фамилии са голям препъни камък, така си е, а “врач” е на руски, не на български), но поне стана ясно, че Созопол е на морето.
Изобщо, рядко приятен романс, с всичките му иначе клишета, даже и преследване имаше. Много се забавлявах с коментарите на романтичните немски читателки, надаващи писъци, че главният герой бил нацист. Някой трябва да вземе да обясни на децата разликата между Вермахта и Вафен СС и изобщо да им поговори за онзи период от историята им, без да изпада в драматизъм. Освен това, liebe Damen, историята и на двете Германии е поизградена точно от бивши нацисти, дочакали спокойни старини. Нацизмът не е приключил кротко на 8 или 9 май 1945 г. Онази част със социализма обаче май хич не я бяха разбрали, та затова и коментари по нея поне нямаше, а на мен ми допадна точно доста трезвият, лишен от патетика поглед в полулярния стил “да ги разпнем, те не са били хора” (защото, разбира се, са били, и още как). Но много се отплеснах - все пак е романтичен роман, и с този Созопол директно вдигам оценката.

Погледнах това заглавие от чисто любопитство какъв романс пък може да и хрумне на авторката, с очакване да зарежа скорострелно прочита. Е, историята не ми позволи да я зарежа току тъй.
Майка и седемгодишната и дъщеря (главната героиня) ся хванати в капана на ужасяващо неподходящото ново гадже на майката и неговия тринайсетгодишен син, който още на тази крехка възраст проявява някои малко зловещи наклонности. Усетила капана, майката се опитва да избяга, но от гангстер в мотоклуб не се бяга толкова лесно, както сама установява.
Всичко е през погледа на дъщерята - ужасно е как едни дете започва да приема за нормални насилието, престъпленията, мръсотията и простотията, опитвайки се да се съхрани все някак. А още по-страшно и тъжно е да се гледа какво се случва с доведения и брат. Престъпната среда не само не е подходяща за човек с мании, фобии и психични проблеми, но го лишава и от малкия му шанс за нещо хубаво и здраво.
Не знам защо изобщо са две части, няма логика, освен пазарна, но нейсе…

Момичето не е глупаво, но стокхолмския синдром се задейства с пълна сила, и това всъщност спасява историята. По непонятни причини тя решава все пак да даде втори шанс на негодника, което може да се случи единствено в роман.
Любители на захарен памук от сорта на Бриджъртън биха получили нервен срив, последван от пристъп на бяс, така че е за крайно ограничена аудитория, която понася добре най-тъмните нотки.

Иначе - странна книга. Люшка се опасно рязко между евтината мелодрама и нелицеприятните истини от живота, които вървят с добро писане. С твърде голямо неудобство, увъртания и извинителен тон описва героите си Наполитано, докрай не е в състояние да ги приеме и напише каквото са, не спира да ги осъжда и заклеймява от камбанарията на несъществуващ и непотребен овехтял “морал”.
В центъра на сюжета главен герой, наред със семейството и изборите, е депресията, която - ако се лепне като чума за едно дете - може да го счупи много преди навлизането му в зряла възраст, в която то, поради липса на умения и мъдрост - просто ще се преструва на възрастен до момента на тоталния крах. За мен Уилям е основният герой на тази история. Въпреки някои леко пресилени моменти или липсата на детайли за някои обосновки, той е много честен и болезнено достоверен образ. Колко малко ни трябва, за да (се) счупим, и колко малко е нужно, за да го избегнем или поне да го облекчим и рехабилитираме…
Някои читатели се колебаят коя от двете други главни героини - Джулия или Силви - е в “грях”, и избират страна. Нито едната, според мен. И двете са прави! Всяка майка има право да избере най-доброто за детето си, колкото и ограничено да е това решение. Всяка жена има право на успех, реализация, признание, блясък. Всяка жена има право да си затвори здраво очите за миналите си грешни решения и да потърси нов шанс. Всяка жена има право да откаже да поеме чуждия товар, или пък обратното - да го поеме докрай. Всяка има право да плюе на условностите и на семейните “правила” от безпросветни времена, ако това носи спасение. И всяка си плаща. В живота всичко си има цена, и се радвам, че Силви и Джулия направиха верния за себе си избор, и бяха щастливи, а цената си заслужаваше.
Наполитано обаче е дразнеща в опита си за морализаторстване както към избора на работещите жени, така и към избора да пратиш мнението на околните по дяволите заради човека, на когото държиш. Ретроградният католицизъм се промъква навсякъде. Интересно, че ниските оценки тук идват от моралистите. На мен пък - обратно - ме дразни опитът на авторката да угоди на всички, липсва ми решителност в писането и и ясна позиция.
Малко от повторенията би могло да се орежат, както и част от патетиката. Можеше да се довнадят и още малко детайли към характерите на някои герои, които в даден момент бяха обект на рязко опростяване в името на моментното действие. Но вълнението си остава истинско, тъй че много ми хареса. Но определено историята няма да допадне на всеки - по литературни или други причини.

Избегнала е и капана на пълната вулгаризация (която се състои в безмозъчни кукли за герои, клишета и нелогичен сюжет, не нещо друго), който също масово се промотира, не знам защо - сигурно защото и в него се спазва своего рода санитарно благоприличие като - “ние сме честни американци, и за изневяра никога няма да пишем, защото ние в САЩ и в нашите любовни романи не правим така.”

По-добре да беше нещастен, тук само трагедия би оправила нещата… Яко написана, само дето след втората половина положението вече е безнадеждно, и то не метафорично, а някои от второстепенните герои ми се искаше да са по-добре разгърнати.

Дилижансът, в който пътува Катрин, е нападнат от бандити. Спасявайки се с бягство, тя налита на още по-ужасна алтернатива - отряд апахи, които с голямо задоволство наблюдават отстрани как бледоликите се избиват, и накрая обират плячката на бандитите, приключвайки с каквото и да е белокожи присъствие в района. Катрин още не знае, че един от отряда, който на няколко пъти почти и тегли ножа без да обели и дума, ще вземе да се окаже любовта на живота и.
И двамата герои ми станаха любимци и са много добре изградени - всеки с миналото и травмите си, всеки - скептик, всеки - способен и/или вършил или все още вършещ лоши неща, всеки - искащ нещо повече от живота си. Никакви тинейджърски тръшканици, а решенията бяха на осъзнати и патили, но балансирани индивиди. Романтиката беше доста по-приглушена за сметка на куп приключения и опасности през първите 2/3, а накрая се вписа много удачно в картинката, нищо в сюжета не се случи безпричинно.
Хепи ендът в епилога искрено ме изненада (макар да е съгласно изискванията на жанра), и на всичкото отгоре е доста реалистичен, авторката е проучила историческите факти достатъчно, за да намери пролука в онази епоха на расизъм и геноцид. На всичкото отгоре авторката е страшно сладкодумна и речникът и не включва нито една от обичайните кухи фрази.
Никак не се учудвам, че не виждам голямо издателство - такъв реализъм в романтика е отдавна считан за отклонение от безсъдържателната политкоректност в любовните романи, която включва смехотворно порно, но съгласно която даже думата “расизъм” трябва да се забрави със задна дата, все едно нищо в миналото не се е случило точно както се е случило.

Много от по-новите англоезични автори паникьосано не смеят дори да произнесат на глас думата “робство”, и се правят или че не съществува, или подхождат толкова засукано и с милиони извинения, “уточнения” (?!) и дисклеймъри, че да ти се отще даже да започваш заглавието. Но и във втората книга от трилогията Елоди Харпър, за моя огромна радост, не отстъпва нито сантиметър в посока на анемичната, безхарактерна и лицемерна захарасаност, която напоследък е запазена марка на почти всичко, рекламирано като исторически фикшън или “преразказан” (разбирай взет наготово за зле притоплена аматьорска употреба) мит.
Във втората част сюжетът се съсредоточва почти изцяло върху Амара. [image] Тя се е изкачила на висока цена едно стъпало нагоре в хранителната верига като метреса на помпейски богаташ. У нея все така продължават да се борят свирепият и инстинкт за оцеляване с вродената и съпричастност към онеправданите и безсилните. Всеки ден я изправя пред нови въпроси и трудни решения, за които единствен правилен отговор липсва, защото самото устройство на римското общество изисква хищническото отношение да е норма.
Силно се надявам последната част, която е предвидена за ноември, да поднесе достоен завършек на тези чудесни две части. Но имам предчувствие, че ще е точно така, защото в годината на действието изригва Везувий. Нямам търпение.

Една от забележителностите на днешния Помпей е лупанарът. Значи както “вълча бърлога”, така и “публичен дом”. Сградата е на централно кръстовище в някогашния град, и похлупакът от вулканична пепел я е запазил отлично. Порнографските рисунки над стаите на проститутките не са особено интересни. Самите килийки, където е кипял нощен труд, обаче са. Размерът им е горе долу колкото едно днешно съвсем малко коридорче. Прозорци няма и е тъмно като в рог. Най-зловещото обаче е леглото във всяка от тези дупки. То е издълбан цял каменен блок, в единия край с издатина за възглавница. Хем евтино, хем на практика вечно. Рядко съм виждала нещо толкова зловещо, съпътствало нечие ежедневие.

И все пак тази адска дупка е била средище на живот, а проститутките са били най-често робини, капка от необятното и безлико робско море, населявало славната римска империя и съставлявало важна част от производствения и инвентар от говорещи предмети.
Рядко срещам напоследък оригинален и смел сюжет в заглавие, предназначено за забавление, без претенции за литература, но случаят е точно такъв. Никаква сладникавост. Който очаква чистоплътна и благопристойна романтика с герои-захаринчета, да си я търси другаде. Всъщност изобщо няма романтика. Ако някой очаква политкоректност, също е сбъркал заглавието. YA също не е бил популярен в Рим, не е популярен и в тази книга - реалността и историята не са стерилна и безопасна жанрова категория. Жанрът тук е само “отлично разказана история”.
Героите са всичко друго, но не и окаяни души от сълзлива мелодрама. Хвърлени в канавката, те се борят за късчето живот със зъби и нокти, с нищожно малкото, което е на тяхно разположение. Някои са жертви, някои са палачи - съзнателни или неосъзнати, често категориите неразличимо се преплитат.
Петте героини, населяващи лупанара, са с внимателно изградени индивидуалности, с много уважение и съпричастност, и дълбоко реалистични, намиращи време и за малко хумор, и дори за приятелство насред адското си ежедневие. Провокиращ е и гангстерът-социопат, менажиращ този процъфтяващ бизнес с тела. Истински близки са всички герои, населяващи Помпей - и бедните, и богатите, и робите, и господарите, и надяващите се, и уморените, и арогантните, и безжалостните. Помпей просто е жив, какъвто действително е бил, а не какъвто ни се иска да бъде.
Амара, Виктория, Дидо, Креса, Беронис, а по-късно и Британика, са различните, болезнено искрени лица на живота, който е по-добре да не се пада на никого и да остане в страшните мигове от историята.
Единствено ми е мъчно, че третата част (втората вече е на четеца ми) ще излезе чак през ноември.
