I said that the pacing was perfect for building this false world and developing these characters and revealing their interrelationships.
Well, this second volume is the one that is really too long and drawn out. Still good overall. The story is moving forward just at a more sluggish pace. I didn’t tear through this one nearly as quickly as volume 1.

You need the slow burn to build up the tension amongst the protagonists and the situation in which they find themselves. I love it. Can’t wait to start volume 2! ...more

It’s frustrating in so many ways… the constant present tense first person presentation of snippets of a month in the life of this kid Clay as he comes home for winter break from college to Los Angeles, the despicable personalities with whom he surrounds himself that you can neither relate to (I hope) nor forgive for their actions, and the unforgivable things he witnesses. But it’s something I just can’t bring myself to stop looking in on. I could only take this book in small chunks at a time. A handful of pages here and there. It’s a short book at 200 pages that I should’ve been able to finish in a day, but the detestability of it all made me stretch it out for nearly two weeks. I can’t explain why I kept going with it, but I did and I don’t regret it. ...more

Her life involves school, her family, and hanging out with her friends and sneaking into clubs. Pretty normal. To her it’s pretty boring. But then something happens. She received word that she is not king for this earth. She is actually a princess of a planet called Faerie who has been placed here to be allowed to age through adolescence in relative safety before being brought back home to claim what’s rightfully hers. But, like any good fairy tale, there are those who don’t want to see this happen.
I absolutely love this story. I mean it’s not entirely unique but it has great characters and Jamie McKelvie’s totally original voice and art style. I also love that, like his previous work on Phonogram with Kieron Gillen, it has that late 90s/early 00s Brit vibe that I just wish would be made into something for the big screen or streaming. But they’d probably botch it all up....more
