Hazard is a very new adult, learning about himself, his capabilities. The Sparks all give him amazing support, and he's a good guy. I didn't really enjoy the pace of the plot and overall the story was not compelling for me. I will probably read the next book though to see if it is more illuminating.

I love the I-team series SO MUCH. I thought it was ended in 2015, when there was a holiday novella Dead by Midnight which was amazing. In addition to the romance, there is always a suspenseful mystery sort of plot with plenty of action. The author always brings a bit of humor to the story, as well as compassion for others.
So I missed out on Deadly Intent when it was released in 2018 so I picked it up at the library. It includes another member of the I-team and a new ex-military lady caught up in a mess. The suspense was chilling and poor Mia didn't have emotional support through family or friends until Joaquin stepped into her world. Joaquin had some of his own issues with work but luckily his extended family and friends came to the rescue. His level of caring and concern for others is heartwarming. Mia was strong and smart, enduring more harassment than she deserved.
There were bits of all our favorite I-team players from the past. So while you don't have to read the previous book, I would because they are wonderful. There's not a bad one in the series. The wide circle of family and friends make a good book, great. There is another book in the series after this, but it is a crossover with her other series which I am just starting.
“The eighty-year-old lady across the street reported the gunshots to police and saw a man in a black hoodie run out of the house. She tried to record him with her phone but had technical difficulties and ended up making a very fine video of her own face.”
“Nice.”
COYER: Read a book with no magical or futuristic elements. PTS: 2

I was VERY excited to get Snowspelled on Audio because the author had offered me the ebook to review when I was first starting this blog and I just couldn't do it at the time. But I wanted it. When I started listening, it was a prequel novella and I thought, ok. But it was better than ok, it was amazing!
It is about a third of the audiobook, so at least a couple hours. I loved the world, the characters, and of course, magic! It is set in the 19th century so it's historical fantasy with romance. I really appreciated having characters who could think for themselves, who weren't always right or make the best decision (they were human) but they cared about others and were trying to do the right thing. The social conventions of the day didn't make their lives simple.
Narration: Emma Newman did a great job with the voices, as she was easy and comfortable listening at my usual 1.5x speed. The primary character in each story was a female and she felt right for their thoughts telling the story. There was a bit of an accent and historical wordings which I enjoyed. There is a bit of distinction between characters with the male voices a bit lower. I like the feelings infused into the dialogue.

I first read the Mercy Thompson series in 2012 and was hooked, binging on all the books then available (books 1-6) in paperback from the library. I have since purchased them all as ebooks. I am excited to be able to read them all through continuously now to keep all the story arcs fresh in my head.
Moon Called is an excellent first book with comfortable world-building and engaging characters. It is action-packed and held my interest from the beginning.
Mercy is an awesome character. We get the story from her point of view. She is strong and very knowledgeable about werewolves and fae. She even has contacts with the vampires. Like every great urban fantasy heroine (or hero), she has friends in many odd quarters and seems to build the oddest alliances. I love how she is sassy with the werewolves. I was afraid for her with the vampires, all of them.
We got more details about Adam than I remembered and I liked him better. I enjoyed seeing her early relationships with members of his pack, also. I was totally icked out by Sam, though. It was fascinating to see Mercy interact with Bran, Leah, Charlies and others in Montana. There were various things about her history which I had forgotten. I had forgotten how many others like witches and fae are also here in the beginning.
I really LOVED this so much and was happy to have more to read and I am thrilled to have this opportunity to read the series again with you all. ...more

I love these books in the Federal K-9 series because of the dogs who work and the law enforcement aspects. The author has 23 years as a federal agent and it shows. Although, this is a work of fiction where some of them are in too obviously in danger. We see old friends from the first two books.
The couple in Dark N Deadly met and were attracted in a previous book. Neither has had a great family life. They both love their siblings but have had difficulties with parents. Tess is from Alabama and Eric worked there for many years.
Their reactions to the issues are different. Tess brings color and life to everything, feeling her passions. Eric has a more shut down, don't have any feelings, you might get hurt style. That is all too common with both sexes.
Tess and Eric meet up again after he stops her brother on the road. Tess hasn't seen her brother in 10 years and he's just turned 18. He's been set up driving a truck with contraband and is in real trouble. There's plenty of action and suspense. Luckily, Eric is protective of them and they go after the real bad guys. I just wish Tess had been honest sooner, rather than holding back on Eric, but her history with the law has not been favorable.
I look forward to more in this series. So far they are all guys in law enforcement with K9 and they meet women in trouble. It's likely to continue this way since we have met some of the other guys in their circle of friends, but it would be cool to have a female K9 officer too, like the author.
Narration: I was thrilled to get the previous book and this one for audio review. Vanessa Daniels continues as the narrator for the series. I enjoyed her distinct voices for both male and female characters. There are some slight regional accents. I was comfortable listening in my normal 1.5x speed.
I found this Jimmy Vega Mysteryseries in a review at a friend's blog and decided I needed to try it. I've been in a full on mystery / suspense/ thriller type binge. Land of Careful Shadows is a police procedural of sorts, but so much more.
The main character is Jimmy Vega, a state homicide detective, and of Hispanic background. His hometown, Lake Holly, New York seems to have quite a large population of immigrants and undocumented Hispanics from a variety of countries. Jimmy is of Puerto Rican heritage.
Jimmy had been a victim of racial profiling in his past, which caused him to lose a music scholarship and changed the course of his life and career. He comes up against the prejudices and profiling as he tries to solve the death and suspected homicide of an undocumented Guatemalan woman, and hunt for her child.
It would be easy for law enforcement if another undocumented person was responsible since they wouldn't have to look at any of their "own" people. There are also a variety of hate crimes happening which may or may not be related. Jimmy needs information and witnesses to solve these crimes and the actual information may lie with the Hispanic community.
I was struck by the issues of immigration, what is right, and what is legal, and how difficult a line it is. Jimmy's past and present collide and present real dilemmas for him as he works to solve the crimes and do what is right and legal.
Narration: The tone and accents in the narration felt very authentic, yet the voices were easy to understand and comfortable for listening. Both male and female voices were well performed. I enjoyed listening at my usual 1.5x speed.
A quick lead in to the series with favorite narrators. 56 minutes or 110 pages just above the 100 page cutoff I use for the novella delimiter.

I wanted to try the series and since it was in Audible Escape and my membership ends tomorrow I jumped into it. I was trying to decide about buying the others in the series. The world seems to include veterinarians and animal rescue so that's a positive too. It introduces characters but is the story of a meeting and ends quickly. The story continues in the series.

I sort of want to read this Cork O'Connor series, and ignore everything else in my life. Recorded Books is rerecording the ones not originally by the primary narrator of the series, David Chandler, which is working out fantastically for me. It's a great series with layers of interesting plots in the mystery / suspense, beautiful Minnesota lake and woods descriptions, the continued development of characters as they grow and learn, and the cultural aspects of the many characters.
I feel you do need to read the series in order, to know the characters and what the current status is with Cork's family. In Heaven's Keep, Jenny and Annie are in college, so Steven is the only one at home. He is going through teenage growing pains of sorts, finding himself. Cork is working as a private investigator but getting ready to open Sam's for the summer this year.
The primary issues are that Jo (Cork's wife) has gone on a work trip and her plane is missing, and Cork is fighting a major development at the lakefront which might spoil the natural beauty. Cork has a difficult emotional journey with his family as they search for Jo. He manages to be thoughtful and compassionate with others in spite of the very difficult circumstances.
I won't spoil the story but it is a long, arduous path to find Jo. Cork is fortunate to have both law enforcement / search and rescue experience, great contacts within the Indian community, and some amazing friends so he can track down what happened.
Narration: I'm so happy the series will have more with David Chandler narration. The Minnesota locations and Indian words were pronounced as I expected. I appreciate his handling of all the voices of both genders, with the primary character being Cork. I was able to listen comfortably at my usual 1.5x speed.

Mark Lawrence does a short recap of the first books in the trilogy at the beginning which I always appreciate. The brief highlighting of the key points is enjoyable. Not only does it take me right into Dispel Illusion but it also gives me a perspective of what the author thinks are the key points. This listen came months after the first two were released only a short time apart.
I don't like time travel stories but this one is wrapped up in math/physics (of course) and Dungeons & Dragons. I wondered what was left now other than Nick fulfilling the destiny he already knew. He is now 40, as he was when he traveled back in the first book. Discussing the various moral decisions and ways they try to keep the timelines, while protecting those they love, here, would be a total spoiler.
There is plenty of action and evil villains here as well as loved ones and allies. But I think the thoughtful intelligence is equally important as thrilling battles and escapes. I appreciate how Nick and Mia loved and worked to protect each other.
Narration: Matthew Frow is Nick for me. I enjoy the inflections of the characters even though I don't know if they are regionally accurate since I'm no expert. I felt male and female voices were comfortable, though almost everything is Nick, with only some Mia and a few brief characters this time. I was able to listen at 1.5x speed instead of 1.25x now I am familiar with the voice.

Elemental World is a PNR spin-off series from the Elemental Mysterieswhich was more urban fantasy following one couple. Elemental World series starts during the Elemental Mysteries but has a different couple in each book. I don't recommend reading the series out of order - I never do - but with the ongoing story throughout, it wouldn't be the best plan. The series plot and the world-building are excellent.
A holiday story, just longer than the 100 pages I use as a novella delimiter, Valley of the Shadow continues Baojia and Natalie's story which came to life in Blood and Sand. The couple wanted to have children so Natalie has remained human to have their two children and raise them. Their schedule and plans have gone well; they are happy. Natalie has continued her work as an investigative reporter. The plan has always been for Natalie to turn vampire when the children are over 18. But now there's a problem.
We see Natalie's decisions about her life and death with the support of all their friends and family as they come together for the holiday at the South American ranch. In addition to allowing us to go through this emotional journey with the couple, we also get to catch up with everyone in the Elemental World. This sort of holiday "love letter" is appreciated since we see all our favorites and hear their latest antics. Combined with Hunter's stellar writing and emotional character progression, it's a must read for me....more

Here we are in the final book of the Green Valley library series, for now. They are all in Kindle Unlimited. These are set in Tennessee in the town where the Winston Brothers grew up and the library is where Bethany Winston worked. Finley and Zeke both come to town and work at the library.
Finley has spent lots of time in Green Valley with her grandma and has retreated here after the breakup of her marriage. Surprisingly, she finds a great job which allows her to do the things she has always wanted. Finley also finds herself, a great group of family and friends, and an attractive guy.
Zeke has taken this summer as a sabbatical of sorts to find his birth parts. He is happy with his adoptive parents in Seattle, and even works in his father's company in IT. He is volunteering at the library while doing his family research. He's easily found his mother and is getting to know her. His father is a bit of a mystery to them both. He's a biker with only a first name, which probably isn't a real name.
Finley and Zeke are attracted to each other, but start as friends. After all, Finley's divorce isn't even final at first and Zeke is only in town for a short time. They enjoy each other's company, and interests, and just have fun together. Shortly, it becomes more.
Shelf Awareness is a lovely romance with both character's experiencing a lot of personal growth and development. I love how kind and supportive they are for each other as friends first, and as they continue to more in their relationship....more

I've always wanted to read this author so when they started releasing these on audio I requested it for review. The X-Ops series is what I classify as PNR where there is a new couple in each book.
The shifters do not change completely. Their eyes change color and they may grow claws. They always have more strength, better hearing, healing and sense of smell than humans. They are born into human families and have just slight genetic differences. Ivy had a great grandmother who was a shifter but her parents are not shifters.
Ivy works for a government covert group which does black ops- the DCO. She worked previously at the FBI but wanted more action than desk work. Her previous partners wouldn't work with her or trust her special skills. But now she has a partner secure enough in his own skills to work with her.
Landon came from covert special forces team. He went into the military to escape a horrible family situation and to hopefully help finance his education. He was leader of his team, and they are all close. Initially, he wasn't thrilled with his new assignment with the DCO but quickly makes a good partnership with Ivy.
I loved their missions and the action. Gathering information and doing surveillance, as well as protection work and taking out bad guys was all fun. The mystery of figuring out what the main bad guy was doing and where he was taking the kidnapped scientists was a good story.
The romance in Her Perfect Mate was a bit less appealing. It wasn't insta-love, more like insta-lust, but then with the life or death style of their work, it quickly became a clear connection. I felt it happened a bit too quickly but this type of suspense situation tends to produce high emotions. There was also a bit of a love triangle with another guy interested in Ivy. Audible classifies it as erotica and there were definitely some smoking sexy times.
Both Ivy and Landon were good-hearted people with excellent skills. They made a great team, supporting each other so each could be their best. I'm excited to read the next in the series. Narration: This was my first experience with Holly Adams. I really enjoyed her approach to male and female voices. The chapters alternated between Ivy and Landon's point of views which I also appreciate. The voices for the non-dialogue parts in the chapter were also more male or female depending on whose chapter it was. That makes sense since it is often their stream of thoughts. I can't recall hearing others do it, though. I really liked it. I listened at my usual 1.5x speed.

The Donner Bakery series is a favorite in the Smartypants Romance books. I enjoy the food and the peeks at Jenn and Cletus. No Whisk, No Reward is the third book and is available in Kindle Unlimited. We watch the cross-country traveler and pastry chef, Sophie, meet and become friendly with Joel Barnes, who has always lived in Green Valley.
Sophie had a bad experience and is going to join her best friend, Anna in opening a new bakery in Boston. Her car breaks down in Green Valley. She ends up getting a temporary gig at the Donner Bakery. It was great to see Tempest and Joy, already known to you if you are reading the series. Jenn is the kindest and best person, ever, except maybe Bethany Winston, but I digress.
Joel has lost his father and brother. He came back to town to help his brother even though he preferred his construction work in Nashville. Now he's in a mess between his auto repair shop and pressure from the biker gang.
I didn't find this story very realistic but it did grab me emotionally. There is more leeway in a small town for the parameters of what I found unrealistic, though. I liked Sophie and thought she was good-hearted and trying her best. I wasn't as happy with Joel's choices especially when he shut her out. It was a fun read with an HEA which is a good effort for the author's first book.
Excerpt:
That’s when I saw Joel sitting alone in a booth by a large window, eating a sandwich, and reading a newspaper. Oh. Hello, conflicted feelings. You’re looking extra conflicting today. Did you do something with your hair? His gorgeous brown hair was a mess and the sleeves of his gray shirt were pushed up revealing his forearms which looked even thicker than I remembered them being, as he worked to fold the gigantic pages of the newspaper into neat manageable folds. This man was seriously hotter than a melting ice-cream analogy. And also, possibly involved with a crime organization! I reminded myself as I continued to stand uselessly trying to find somewhere to sit. I tried not to stare, but it was impossible not to smile at the indelicate way he shoved the corner of his sandwich into his mouth and then proceeded to chew as though it might try to escape. He picked up his coffee and was mid-sip when his eyes rose up from the rim of his cup and saw me standing by the entrance staring at him. Busted. “Take a seat wherever you can find one, hon, I’ll be along shortly to take your order,” a lady with a nameplate that read Janice, instructed me as she hurried by with a tray of coffee and doughnuts. I looked back over at Joel who was watching me and gestured to the empty seat across from his. My mind immediately went to Joy and Tempest’s reaction when they found out he was my landlord, but I quickly reminded myself that he’d done nothing to warrant any rudeness on my part. Despite their apprehension, I figured this was a good opportunity to try and get more insight into whether I thought their response carried any weight. Plus, I really needed coffee. I made my way over, feeling his eyes on me as I crisscrossed around tables while trying to be ever vigilant of any sudden movements from other patrons. My good sense will not be thwarted by your blue-green eyes and frowny brows, you magnificent biker beast. “Good afternoon,” he greeted in a smooth as hot honey drawl. I was glad that I was already halfway into the seat because I felt my knees completely give out. Traitor knees. My armor of detachedness was not as hefty as I’d hoped. “Taking a break from work?” I inquired, proud of my cool, even tone. “Yep, just grabbing something to eat. You?” “I’m done for today,” I replied reaching for a menu and unfolding it as though it were just as informative as his newspaper. “Nice. Got any plans?” “Not really, I was going to check out the bookstore downstairs, but that’s about—” I was interrupted by the feeling of fingers gently stroking my cheek and looked up to find him reaching across the table, his eyes focused on a spot as he gently swiped at something on my face. “Sorry, you got flour or something on your cheek it was driving me crazy,” he said before pulling away and leaning back coolly against his seat. I’m gonna get thwarted, aren’t I?
Hadley, ie. Amelie, is now living in Atlanta training to be the POA. We don't really know her all that well and now we begin to learn about her. Her childhood is not really an excuse but it certainly played into her bad choices. Atlanta is a fresh start, but not an easy choice.
I enjoyed getting to know her and loved her little business with its sewing aspects. I find her interactions with the pack to be a little odd. I don't think I'm on board with any of her romantic prospects at this point.
The murder mystery was her first case in charge. It felt bumbly, even if it wasn't. Hadley checked for all the forensic type information, interviewed those who might know something, and she did make reasonable deductions. It just felt like all reaction, rather than smart investigating. The visit by Linus was great and she did do a good job of working things out in the end.
I'll be interested to see how things progress. Hadley is an advocate for women / girls and so is Midas. The pack has ripples of unease from Lethe moving to Savannah. Shadow of Doubt is an apt title and a good beginning.
Narration: Rebecca Mitchell is Grier for me and also Linus. I barely distinguished her Hadley from her Grier voice. Ford sounded too much like Boaz for me. She did perform both male and female voices well. I listened at my normal 1.5x speed.

The Elemental Legacyseries builds upon the very beginning which is Elemental Mysteries and then the Elemental World. I would classify Elemental Mysteries and Elemental Legacy as urban fantasy as they deal with one couple primarily, whereas Elemental World is more paranormal romance with a different couple or character in each book.
You could read just Elemental Legacy but being the OCD reader I am, I would start with Mysteries, then World, then Legacy. If that's too much, you could probably just do Mysteries, the Bronze Blade, and then Legacy, or possibly just Bronze Blade and then Legacy. But I would really just read them all as they are great!
Ben and Tenzin are in the slowest burn romance EVER. I mean, seriously, they have lived together for five years but aren't together! There is personal growth for both of them over the years and they are learning and growing their "business."
Night's Reckoning is what I expected but not what I expected. So without giving too many spoilers, I will try to explain and review. It's a fascinating read where nothing happens as I would have thought.
Ben told Tenzin in Puerto Rico how he felt and she ran. They haven't been in the same location since then, and they are not at the same place for very much time here. Ben is determined to make progress or move on in his life without Tenzin. Tenzin wants to forget they had this conversation and go on as friends.
There is however a treasure hunt which is their normal adventure. It's in the area Tenzin is from and with her ex-lover and sire both involved, along with lots of politics. It's a sunken ship which has been lost for hundreds of years. The diving and collecting of historical data and preserving artifacts involves water vampires and a university archaeological team. The glorious treasure is found, and eventually ends up where it belongs.
Ben and Tenzin both have emotional unease throughout the adventure. By the end, Tenzin seems calm and settled. It is hard to say what Ben is feeling. The story ends with the treasure hunt completed but the emotional issues not resolved.

Ben whistled slowly. "I don't want to know how much it costs to run AC all year round in this heat and humidity."
She set the tray of tea on a low table. " That's why I steal things, Benjamin. I have to take care of my books."

I would have appreciated more of Linus' thoughts and feelings. I am tired of the quirky antics with food and fighting and such with Lethe. I'm also tired of Boaz.
