Our main character gets to know the water in all of its different forms (including in books!) until they feel brave enough to take their first leap. I loved the illustrations, especially when the characters read about the ocean and all of its creatures are depicted so beautifully. This one might be a little long for storytime but it would be a great read for a beach/water theme or for a bravery/taking chances theme....more

My "Owen-esque" behavior came from undiagnosed ADHD and as a child who was often shushed and heard a lot of mean comments from adults about how much I talked, this just sort of hit me wrong. I think it has an important message in the importance of slowing down, talking less, and listening, but I can tell you from experience I would not have learned that lesson by losing my voice...I just would have been frustrated and I worry a lot of chatty kids would feel that way too. I think there's a better way to convey the message....more

I loved that his family, friends, and teachers were accepting of him, but I also really liked that his Big Brother was conflicted about Penelope's transition and needed Mom to explain why Penelope's change didn't have to make sense to Big Brother, they just needed to love Penelope. I could write a whole book about what I love about this book. It's so sweet and so relatable, especially if you love books more than people. Lotti is I could write a whole book about what I love about this book. It's so sweet and so relatable, especially if you love books more than people. Lotti is shy and struggles to make friends - she'd prefer to stay in the worlds her books take her to. One day she learns books can be a bonding tool with other people and a whole new world opens up to her.
I loved Lotti's little quips that were separate of the main text. I think for readers who don't want to spend too much time in the book, you could just read the main text and be able to get something out of the story, but she's too funny not to read all of her asides. I also LOVE that the book recommends more books across all age ranges. It was so fun to look at the illustrations and see which books I've read, which ones I haven't read in a long time, and which ones I needed to add to my TBR. The books were also so diverse and thoughtfully placed throughout. I also loved that Lotti didn't just read in her age group, but brings home books from the "teen" area and specifically mentions she could never be too old for picture books (same, Lotti). This is just a flawless book for any book lover or shy kids who might not know yet how to connect with other kids....more

I think it could have gone a little more in depth about why it's important to remember there are sweet people everywhere....more
