Finley must protect the females of this lovely upper class family whilst unveiling the truth without ruining the reputation of the family that she works for. He doesn't mind until Trepoff contacts him and tries to play Holmes and Moriarty off of each other. Moriarty recruits a journalist(who gets a really good secretary who wants to be a real journalist. No one'll give her a chance since she's a woman until now) who works to get him information on all fronts. Moriarty is not the 'Napoleon of Crime', but Trepoff sure is. A book to grab the reader and not let them go. There are plenty of books that focus on mythology, but not Irish mythology. This is the story of an oldA book to grab the reader and not let them go. There are plenty of books that focus on mythology, but not Irish mythology. This is the story of an old Irish legend come to life in Victorian New York.
A young girl, Grainne/Grace, from a previously wealthy family has to marry up so that her family will survive. Her family consists of a sickly mother, a 'mad' grandmother, and a drunk brother who bets and drinks what money there is left away.
It quickly becomes apparent that the story is more than a poor girl's drama when she meets a stableboy called Derry (short for Diarmid) who has been called along with the rest of the Finian to bring Ireland back into it's own rule. *Diarmid is a bit arrogant, but what else would be expected from him? He also has a 'love spot' that causes passionate and instantaneous love of him when viewed by a woman, on his forehead. At least, he does feel guilty when he uses it.*
The problem is that the men who called did not know that the Finian came and so, out of desparation, they call the Fomori(who represent Chaos and oppose the Finian/Finn's Warriors). Diarmid posing as a stableboy has to find who called them with the horn, why it went wrong, and where/who the Veleda is. He is the one who stumbles upon all of the answers in one. Young Grace is engaged to her childhood friend, Patrick, who heads an Irish resistance movement. He was the one that called the Finian. It also turns out that Grace is the Veleda and her brother, Aidan, is a Stormcaster(Grace has to take care of the family due to his being a drunk.)*He drinks to take the thunder sounds out of his head and to take away the electrical feeling that courses thru him.* Diarmid falls in love with Grace whilst she is engaged to Patrick and Grace is torn between the two. She, as the Veleda, must choose between the Finian/Diarmid and the Fomori/Patrick. She chooses Patrick whilst Aidan runs off with the Finian. The series continues with, THE WEB. recommended for those that are into: Victorian setting, Irish mythology, romance, love triangles, and mystery....more

She doesn't speak his language and he doesn't know her, but he helps her to escape them. They run and hide from the pirates and live in caves. Robins' knowledge of the island helps him form a plan to fake their deaths. When they finally get off of the island, Robin and 'Friday'(she wanted to start over with a new name. They met on a Friday and she started her new life, hence the name)work as sailors until arriving in London. The Captain gave them money and said that they could come back to him for a job in a few days. They declined and went into London. They were both robbed, nearly beaten, and meet a mysterious man, Daniel Defoe(who saves them from the beating. Aristocrats are just so loving.) He tells them that he will pay for their story and is particularly keen on Friday's. They decline and end up following him. They do not make a deal with him, but with the society he works with, Segment W. They are from that moment on running around London as bodyguards and rescuers. Sherlock is at university and Mycroft is already a government secretary. He is engaged to a young lady, Georgianna, and is best friends with a man double his age, Cyrus Douglas who owns a tobacco shop (who also has to act like he just works there and doesn't own it because of his being a darker shade of skin). Cyrus and Georgianna are notified that Trinidad, where they are both from, is having a problem with its children disappearing. They both insist on leaving which leaves Mycroft with Cyrus when Georgianna leaves that very night and is begged not to go by her fiancee. Cyrus and Mycroft encounter all kinds of trouble on the boat ride over and realize that they are being pursued/hunted. The good news is that Cyrus knows people once they get there who can help and protect them. Mycroft must solve the mysteries that are all linked together in order to survive with his life and Cyrus' intact. recommended for those into the Sherlock Holmes books/stories/mythos, mysteries, traveling adventures, and thrillers....more

She is 'too': tan, curvy, smart, bossy, intimidating, and nosy (literally). A certain Earl is very interested in her and they are forced together out of a need to figure out a mystery that affects all of England and his instinctive frustration/protectiveness (Alpha, duh, she's made for him). She's given protection, but it's a fat lot of good when a waxwork man who can't be killed is after her (and it turns out her supernatural friends). She is close not only to Earl Maccoon, a large Scottish Alpha werewolf with attitude, but also to a great dandy of a vampire with hidden wits, Lord Akeldama. she solves the case and gets out of perilous danger with the help of her wits, feminine wiles, and sheer gutsiness (plus, an overly protective Alpha werewolf)....more

She still gets to see everyone and does eventually get over herself with regards to Soap (which is positively thrilling). The conspiracy of the Picklemen has been building throughout the series and it finally comes to fruition in this book. The school is attacked and they are able to evacuate it while Sophronia stays on board. She works to get control of the ship back and to free hostages (the headmistress and the crazed vampire professor). She does her thing and saves the day with a little help from the hostages including some sooties. ...more

Lady Kingair's pack (she comes from a family of werewolves, hence she's quite mannish)is going thru hard times. A conspiracy is afoot and Sophronia, Dimity, Soap, and Felix want to help her. They steal a train off of Monique(conspiracy afoot, of course it's her)and head to Scotland. They have a train coal shoveler with them, Dusty, and Soap is driving the train. They alternate shoveling and keeping a lookout for approaching vessels/people. Felix's dad makes an appearance and takes Felix away. Sophronia finally realizes that she actually loves Soap(duh) and he is attacked by Felix's dad again. The good Captain and the Dewan arrive just in time to be told what's really happening with Felix's dad. He leaves and shoots Soap who is then saved by the Dewan after much persuasion. Soap is now a werewolf, as he wanted and Lady Kingair is engaged to the Captain, who'll be taking over as Alpha of her family pack. Overall, good endings for characters. The first time I'll be going into a book of this series not sure about how it'll go for me as a reader. My favorite characters are all leaving, but I still have Sophronia and I'm sure Mrs. Carriger has some tricks up her voluminous sleeves. ...more

She likes to climb and experiment with different placesSophronia is fourteen and a great disappointment to her mother. She doesn't act very ladylike. She likes to climb and experiment with different places to spy from(the dumbwaiter, love that scene) and is fearless. She is fiercely loyal to her friends and makes a strange group of them. She is a covert recruit for the Mademoiselle Geraldine's Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality. All of the other girls are from important families and are high society. Her friends consist of: a girly-girl, Dimity; a manly-girl, Sighead(who was raised in Scotland with her family of werewolves-which are all men); a larger girl who lacks confidence, Agatha; a girl who dresses as a boy, Vieve; a lower class boy who works in the lower decks and is always covered in coal, Soap (she doesn't even bat an eye that he's not white under the coal); the girly-girl's brother, Pillover.
The school is transporting a prototype with one of their girls who should be finishing, Monique. She is also sent to pick up Sophronia, Dimity, and Pillover. So, flywaymen attack them demanding the prototype. They take Monique hostage and leave the teens be while they go thru and destroy all of the luggage. Sophronia takes the carriage back and even manages to save Monique(who had become a weeping mess once she was hit) and later regrets it. Once they get to the school, Monique lies and says that she saved the day. For punishment, she is sent back to start over with the younger girls. The teachers are a unique collection of people. Two men(one a vampire, one a werewolf) and the rest are women. The girls must learn everything from etiquette and proper curtsying to how to conceal a knife and throw it. They are trained not just for high society, but for espionage. Sophronia proves herself to be the only student who is focusing on and natural at the espionage aspects. She ends up with a pet who needs to be fed coal, so she has to make trips to the lower decks. This is where she meets Soap and Vieve. The mystery of the prototype's location must be solved in a timely fashion since the flywaymen have taken to attacking their school(it floats). Sophronia finds out where it is and now the trick will be to wait for Monique to get it and then take it from her. recommended for those into: steampunk, mystery, action, gadgets, and Victorian times....more
