I love that the "magic" that heals the children and Mr Craven is, in fact, no magic at all but just finding community, purpose, and getting some exercise. :D How poignant for readers, even well over a hundred years later....more

I honestly think everyone should read this book to help exercise their self-awareness. I feel more educated and more able to show empathy in my interactions with all emotionally immature people....more

I appreciated the historical notes she included in the back, explaining the truths we know about the Ripper and where she took liberties. It's definitely a YA novel, though it doesn't shy away from the gore, so the plot and mystery are pretty straight forward, but it was still enjoyable, especially if you like Victorian era London as a setting....more

I liked the historical elements! I just didn't understand why that's the direction the book took. It was even stranger that the crazy father also time traveled. Like, I was willing to say Mia was a "witch" since the Salem setting and all really leaned that way. But it didn't feel really thought out to me. ...more

This was super cute. I wasn't really sure about it at first. The first couple chapters didn't hugely hook me, but it didn't take too long. I loved how this book adapted Shakespeare's story. I honestly ate it up....more

I expected a lot of social media talk, which there was plenty of, but there was a lot of other good stuff, too. I was intro to the concept of "Manifest Dismantling" which was interesting! I like these kind of books mostly to help me be more mindful and this offered a lot of things to contemplate aside from just "Unplug! Unfollow!"...more

I thought that the pace was lagging there in the middle. Then the final portion came around and everything snapped into focus for me. I want to reread this book with more knowledge. I picked it up really not knowing anything except there was a movie made from it. This was possibly the most genius book I've read in ages. I only hesitate to give it five stars because of my own brain, my own feelings while reading it and being a bit bored...but I genuinely think that a reread for feel different. I'm going to shelve this lovely book and come back to it maybe next year sometime. I want to re-devour it with foreknowledge of the end, of the purpose. ...more

It's one of those situations where I knew of the Stonewall Uprising and knew a few things these essays talked about, but it's not exactly a topic they covered in history class in the 90s. These essays had a lot of educational value for any US citizen who is part of the LGBT community or considers themself an ally. Or, really, any human with a shred of compassion. This period of history needs to be better known. Highly, highly recommend this to basically everyone....more
