3.5 stars.
This book has been out for a few years now but it finally has an audiobook! I didn't like the beginning of the book where someone is actively cheating and they are both in the knowledge that one of them is in a relationship. And then later on, when one of the participants throws the cheating into the person who was cheated on's face. DID NOT LIKE. But I enjoyed the storyline for the most part and how Lizzie is an absolute mess of an 18-year-old college student (weren't we all?) at the beginning of the book. And then her parents die together in a car accident and BOOM! she is the guardian to her 2 younger brothers. She's still a kid herself. Some parts of this were rough to read as a fully-formed (mostly) adult. lol. I will definitely be continuing the trilogy, most excited for book 3!

The case in SiSW is referred to quite a few times in this one - l'affaire Sackville. The new mystery seems very convoluted and involves many surprising people. I love Charlotte's relationship which I can't really talk about but it's really sweet and kind of sad. And then gets a lot more sad! But I really enjoy that aspect of the story. And I really am rooting for them!! Another obstacle has been removed!
I found a quote I particularly liked, "God gives us only one life. But with good books, we can live a hundred, even a thousand lives in the time we are allotted on this earth." This was said to Livia when she was reading Wilkie Collins and it resonated with me! I really liked the book and especially the ending and now I have to wait too long for book 3!

I think this is a book that we need very much right now. Everyone should read this even if you don't think you're racist. ThFirst-to-Read Penguin ARC.
I think this is a book that we need very much right now. Everyone should read this even if you don't think you're racist. This book shows the little things white people do, even unconsciously, that are racist. Jodi Picoult may not be black but I sure think she did her homework. This is a very fragile subject and she needed to get it right. I think she did. It's a hard pill to swallow, realizing that you're racist when you thought you weren't. But if you aren't part of the solution, you're part of the problem. Acceptance is key. We all have two arms, two legs, one brain, one heart. We're all human. The relationship between Ruth and Kennedy by the end of the book is hopeful. Two women, two mothers, shared experiences bringing them together. Doesn't matter what's on the outside. This book is also a book about how people CAN change, if they want to. But there has to be a turning point, an earth shattering revelation like the one in this book.

I am NOT a fan of secretly pining for someone who is with someone else. Yes, it happens, I know it happens, but I don't want to be in someon3.5 stars.
I am NOT a fan of secretly pining for someone who is with someone else. Yes, it happens, I know it happens, but I don't want to be in someone's head who is doing it. Especially when the person he is with is your ROOMMATE. That was a bit ick for me and barely broken up is just...tasteless. Disrespectful. It makes me remember Rory thinking she had dibs on Dean even though he was married (yes a quite bit of a different circumstance for sure) because she had him first. Who had him FIRST does NOT matter. So yeah, a bit rude, IMO. So it was a little hard to get past that.

I love these ladies (Hand, Ashton, Meadows) and I'm thrilled they're doing a 'Mary' trilogy! This one was about Mary, Queen of Scots. We wander back into Eðian territory and see some familiar faces from My Lady Jane, how fun! There were many aspects of this book I enjoyed and many tales that wove into the storyline! I very much enjoyed Nostradamus' daughter, whom of course I cannot remember the name of. Annnd all of the Mary's in Mary, Queen of Scots' entourage! They all had little nicknames because they were all named Mary! Which is also my mother's name. lol. Can't wait for My Imaginary Mary!

Synthesized narrator = blech but that aside, I enjoyed my first novel by Shaun David Hutchinson in a novel that is not usually his wheelhouse, I think. This is a straight-up fantasy! I liked the time period and the characters a lot, the World's Fair, so exciting!! I didn't like the magicians and how they treated their underlings, their "children." One was kidnapped as a child! Ahhh! But Jack and Wilhelm were a great team. I don't really like the cover art though, it seems, I don't know, childish. I don't like the artwork, the faces are too pointy.

A Banh Mi for Two is Trinity Nguyen's debut novel about a Vietnamese young woman and a Vietnamese American young woman who are connected by a food blog. Lan runs a food blog about Sai Gon and Vivi is an avid follower of Lan's blog and Instagram. Vivi's mother left Viet Nam when she was young and refuses to talk about it so Vivi takes matters into her own hands and participates in a study abroad program in Viet Nam, though her parents think she is in Singapore. That seemed a little unbelievable to me. I don't see an 18-year-old pulling that kind of scam over on her parents. But aside from that, Vivi and her best friend Cindy study in Viet Nam and end up meeting Lan. Hijinks ensue, kisses happen, it's all very sweet. Lan is feeling stuck in Sai Gon and uninspired but Vivi changes that. I still don't agree with what Vivi did, it's really not her place to question her mother's reasons for not talking about something, I thought it was really disrespectful towards Vivi's mother. Cute sapphic book though. And food talk was top tier. Love Vietnamese food!...more
