So glad to say I really enjoyed this!! Such a good combination of a cozy wholesome fantasy but also enough stakes and adventures for it not to get boring but they also never take away from the coziness in my opinion.
I also loved the already established lesbian relationship between the two main characters and seeing them grow and evolve even more throughout the book as a couple but also as individuals.
If you want to read about two lesbians in love opening a bookshop that also sells tea in a small town but it's also filled with magic, dragons, griffins, mysteries and so many fun side characters ? Read this. I also can't wait to read the sequel because it's about pirates? Sign me up...more
I absolutely loved this and devoured this in one day. Her Majesty's Royal Coven is one of my favorites series ever and this prequel was so interesting to see the start of what we know in the later books. Everything happening at court and with Anne Boleyn was so well done and Juno Dawson's writing and characterization is always amazing !

Our Wives under the Sea is one of my favorite books and I decided to finally pick up her debut short story collection before I read her newest release Private Rites.
I really liked this! Since it's a short story collection I obviously liked some stories more than others but they all had the very distinctive Julia Armfield writing style, prose and themes. This is literary horror at it's finest. My favorite story was by far The Great Awake, I would read a whole novel or novella with that concept! Some other favorite stories were: salt slow, Cassandra After, stop your women's ears with wax and Formerly Feral...more

This was such a fun (cozy) murder mystery/fantasy book! The chronic illness representation was so spot on that it hit me hard in the chest multiple times (the main character Mallory had fibromyalgia) I also loved the found family/friendship dynamics. It was real and raw and honest and lovely.
I do think the book was a bit too long and it had some pacing issues and I felt like it didn't always knew what to be tonally. Yes it was a great mix of a very diverse book and talking about real life issues while also being a high stakes mystery with cool magic and lots of humour thrown in there but sometimes the humour or commentary felt like it came out of nowhere not fitting the rest of the scene which would take me out of it a bit.
But overall really enjoyed this and I will be picking up the sequel !...more

This book explored some really difficult themes and topics in such a good and powerful way!! Definitely check out the content warnings before reading this because it gets very very dark.
But I had some major issues with the pacing. My paperback copy was nearly 600 pages long and I felt like it could've been edited down a lot! The middle dragged on and on while the end and all the reveals were way too fast....more

It took me a while to get into because I had to get used to the writing style (very victorian-esque) and the multiple characters and timelines. It's also an epistolary novel (completely told through letters) which I love! But can also make you not connect to the characters as much. But oh boy I did connect with them and care for them and love them. This is such a hard story to explain and I know it won't be for everyone. To try and explain it briefly we follow E and Henery who correspond through letters because they are trying to figure out a mystery. Through a different timeline, where E's sister Sophy and Henery's brother Vyerin correspond we find out that they are trying to figure out how E and Henery disappeared.
It's a wonderful light academia novel with lush descriptions of ocean exploration, scholars being scholarly, a beautiful love story and a beautiful platonic love story as well, it's surprisingly very queer and there is neurodivergent representation as well (OCD and anxiety for example)
By the end I was completely enraptured by this story and these characters and by the way it ended I need the sequel now!!
