She had given up falling in love a long time ago, all her boyfriends she dated had a relationship with her as more of a business partnership. She always put work first. When it's Christmas Eve, it's only Alexis who is working. She had employees working which made her proud. Instead of bringing excitement and the holiday feel to her office as a boss, she was grieving her parents and totally disconnected from the lights and decorations that brought magical moments. As she started to hallucinate, she had to be in charge of her emotions. Because of her work, she never celebrated Christmas.
That's when Justin drives her around as her employee wants to reveal his feelings for her. Her driver, Justin admired Alexis's strength, dedication, and fearlessness. You can give your whole life to your career and sacrifice on a daily basis therefore it was a price that Alexi paid that this story brings to a reader's attention. Instead of accepting the present moment everything she talked about brought stress in her. Everything Alexi did was connected to her career. In the end, Justin turns out to be a Trustworthy person she can confide about her frustrations with work and relationships even though losing her parents brings pain and memories. The last thing she wanted was to love someone truly again and risk losing them like she had lost her parents. Was Alexi better off lonely? Can the wonderful festive season spark her to return to the Christmas spirit that she kindled 20 years ago during her childhood with her mom and dad whom she missed dearly?

If you have already read the other book in the series "Ragged Orphan", this can be read as a standalone novel as well. Jared works for the Big Irishman Toby McGuire who lives in Ivy Lane and has no choice. I admired the relationship Jared shared with Toby and his wife Alice. Jared's mother had died of starvation and his sister had succumbed to sickness. Jared rules the notorious Mr McGuire's territory. In Bad Penny, the young man Jared who is the same age as Clarice saves her from a severe beating by her father along Erskine Street.
Clarice accuses her father of being a boozer and a nasty drunker who is incapable of raising her even though he has a job at the brickworks, he spends most of his wages boozing. At the same time, her father called her lazy but she disagreed with her father and was determined to stand on her feet. All Clarice wanted was someone to take care of her without trying to batter her to death. Clarice felt lonely and burdensome with the trauma by herself while facing her father's actions. The enormity of her situation made Clarice run away from her home and father.
Jared Johnson had an interest in her and liked her much in the beginning. But they part ways and things change for good and forever in their lives. Clarice knew Jared would take care of her as her handsome savior whereas Clarice wanted more; she wanted it all; trips to the theatre, dining out at posh venues, furs, jewelry, and money- lots of money. Jared had to forget Clarice's Connaught and get on with life. Clarice knew Jared was not in a position to provide all these things to her. As Clarice leaves her home, she meets Clifford. Clifford takes her to theatres and beautiful restaurants and spends on her food. He takes her to fancy places and gambling houses. All she wanted now was to play cards and win. She started earning money and becoming rich, and that's all she cared about. She could take care of herself. She was using Clifford to go to Gambling clubs and play and it became her drug of choice and she knew she could never give up.
Later Clarice gets banned from gambling houses as the suspicion of cheating is rumored around. She sets fire to these gambling areas and gets arrested by the police for it. Meanwhile, Jared gets married to Rose and starts his new and happy life with her. Toby dies of an attack and Alice and her friends grieve losing him along the way.
With a captivating and exciting storyline, this novel is a wonderful and cozy read. I couldn't put the book down. I'm looking forward to more books from this author.

Gabby thought it is better to talk to Elodie about both her past and future that would be easy if they were in France and as she was planning to leave her the inheritance to Elodie. Elodie was a journalist writing full time novels in her spare time and completed her media degree. Gabby was more of a surrogate mother to Elodie growing up in the same house in Devonshire, as her mother abandoned her and never promised to return. Elodie did not know that her grandmother was always there for her whenever she needed the support. As they reach France and make their stay comfortable at an Airbnb, Christmas fun was definitely in the air. Down by the harbor they stood on the Esplanade du Pres des Pecheurs, looking at the Christmas market.
As going back to the memory lane, it was hard for Gabby in her younger years to work in a casino and later at Hotel Le Provencal when she was growing up and even disowned by her family. Elodie is stunned has she learns her grandmother owned a villa No.5 in France which Gabby had inherited from her father leaving her with excitement too. Gabby also owned a property house on the Riviera in France. All this being kept as a secret away from Elodie as she was not old enough to uproot it. Gabby wants Elodie now to think about the villa and the house in France, decide what is the right thing to do, whether to rent or sell it.
Elodie becomes bitter and unforgiving to her mother Harriet who returns back to her and Gabby after many years of abandoning her. As Harriet confronts why she had to leave it becomes difficult for Elodie to accept her mother and come in terms with her. The ending is happy and expected one.

A Christian southern family drama novel that takes place in the setting of Hickory Dock, North Carolina. It was a slow mover for me, but nonetheless a fascinating and a simple read filled with great characters.... First and foremost a story about a family (and a multi-racial family…dad Fred Baldwin is Black and mom Paulette is white). McKinley their only son returns home from Philadelphia after he graduated from college to dreadfully listen to the overheated conversations along the way, even though marriage conflicts arising in his mum and dad's relationship was present but what keeps them together is their faith towards God.
McKinley's dad, Fred designed furniture for George & Company. He was truly a professional architect who thinks like a designer and was not interested in feelings of his friends or colleagues when it came to building a business. Mckinley grew up around the business, so he was familiar with his daddy's business but not interested to follow his footsteps. Paulette a bit concerned about their son's future after thirty-five years knew it was Fred's life's work. Their livelihood.
The author addresses relationship conflicts and racism in a careful manner in this novel. I was feeling sympathetic towards each of them. This is my first novel written by Robin W Pearson. I would rate it 4 star!
