When Puffin relocated from Iceland to Brookloon in New Stork City with his parents, he has to go to a new school. On his first day at the United Avian Nations School, Penguin is assigned as his buddy. Penguin's helpful nature has him running all day and Puffin feels neglected. With the help of his parents he crafts a plan to be a friend himself and get involved, starting with the school play. Puffin will get a chance to shine (literally) on Opening Night.
The graphics as colorful and engaging. Loved the little bits of avian humor and the side story about other birds thinking Puffin is another Penguin. A cute new graphic novel to introduce to young elementary kids, especially those who are in a new school or struggle to make friends.
A big thank you to my GR buddy Rosh for bringing this encouraging little read to my attention. Also to Kids Can Press and NetGalley for a DRC in exchange for an honest review....more
Pedo mellon a minno ~ Speak friend and enter (Elvish)
The friendship between C.S. Lewis & J.R.R. Tolkien has taken on legendary status. We may examine Pedo mellon a minno ~ Speak friend and enter (Elvish)
The friendship between C.S. Lewis & J.R.R. Tolkien has taken on legendary status. We may examine this from afar and assume they were not ordinary men living everyday lives. Yet, as we examine their paths to the point of intersection and then the diverting of later years, we realize that God's providence was at work. What a gift those two have been to all ages!
I have been a John Hendrix fan since I read The Faithful Spy: Dietrich Bonhoeffer and the Plot to Kill Hitler. This new release is brilliant. Each of the authors is represented by an avatar. Tolkien by a wizard and Lewis by a lion. The two avatars serve as guides taking us into the story through a door marked "Joy" and then also directing us to Portals with additional info along the way (The Roots of Myth, The Origin of the Fairy Tale, The Fantasists, and The Artifacts Attic). Even though my ARC was not colored in, I could still thoroughly appreciate the graphics. The finished product will be simply spectacular.
Thank you to Abrams Fanfare and Edelweiss+ for a DRC in exchange for an honest review. One note on format, the Kindle version separates all the dialogue from the bubbles making it difficult to follow. Be sure to download in Adobe Digital for the best reading experience.
In sorrow we must go, but not in despair. Behold! we are not bound for ever to the circles of this world, and beyond them is memory. ~ J.R.R. Tolkien

He sees her much like her family does and it is helpful to her as she struggles with her self image. Laverne the Llama gets in on the portrait projects. Love the fact that we see quite a bit more of Laverne in this volume! There is a bit less time with the CPC, but we definitely have much business to finish there. The next episodes promise some answers about the members of the club and especially Gwen's origins. Should be interesting!...more

Before reading this new graphic novel I viAn inspiring look at the team sport of lion dancing. It is so much more than just putting on a lion costume.
Before reading this new graphic novel I viewed some live lion dancing performances on Youtube. Such an intricate display. The two people in the costume must be in sync and often there is another pair performing alongside. Then the drum and cymbals must be tuned in so they can play the right music for the moves. That lion head even has eyes that blink and a mouth to grab ceremonial items hanging overhead.
At the heart of this story is a young man whose father was a championship lion dancer and died at a young age in a performance-related car accident. Wei was once on a team, but grew frustrated and left to work at excelling in academics. Now in middle school, he realizes that his life is incomplete and returns to the sport. Will he be able to learn the skills the team needs for him to be a head? What about his estranged former teammate Jung? Can they both be a part of the same team?
Ultimately, learning to work with a team is an important life skill. Along the way Wei will gain new skills and the support of his teammates. A shout out to my GR friend Rosh for helping me discover this fascinating read. ...more

Anthony is in the cool crowd and he needs help with language arts. Leah is his new tutor. She is not in with the popular kids. When the two of them start finding common ground, what do they do about the other friends who don't like the changes? Love the glimpses we get of these kids at school, out and about, and at home. Some of my favorites were the nighttime antics of Linney (shown below) and her attempts to keep a visiting dog from being her friend. The dog is not deterred in the least. So determined! My most favorite panels involved Lucy finding the cat in her closet. She apologizes for coming to find a sweater and makes sure to turn off the light AND shut the door for Linney. Admit it. You have done the same kind of thing for your cat. I know I have. ...more

I am a visual person and reading this new format really added a new dimension to my appreciation of this book. There is a Lapine Glossary included which I definitely needed. Terms like "Elil" (enemies), "Homba" (Fox), and "Sliflay" (To go above ground to feed.) are just a few. This project was completed with the full cooperation of Richard Adams' daughters. The whole adaptation team spent time in the real-life downs where the author got his inspiration. Such an impressive project. Highly recommended! ...more

The Judean date palm became a symbol of Judah during the reign of King Solomon in 957 BCE. The siege of Masada was the end of Judah during the Roman empire in 734-74 CE. Over the centuries, the Judean date palm becomes extinct. Until. . . And excavation of Masada in the 1960's unearths a jar of date palm seeds. Still. . . It is forty years before anyone tries to grow a date palm tree from the seeds. What is amazing is that not one, but two (a male and a female) were used to produce a date harvest after 15 years. This graphic novel tells the story in three parts: Rebellion, Hope, and Rebirth. An amazing STEAM story!...more

WaReading this series is like opening a time capsule. Sunny is in the seventh grade and it's 1978. Her mom wants her to keep busy and out of trouble. Watching the ABC Afterschool Special (remember those?) does not count. So, she goes to cheerleading tryouts. Be Agressive! Be! Be! Agressive! (remember that one?) Unfortunately her back flip is nonexistent and Sunny doesn't make the cut.
Sunny and classmate Arun are discussing their lack of athletic ability and decide to try starting a debate team. Long story short, the team is successful. Yay! And Sunny gets her first pantsuit for an important competition. While we don't get all the details on her debates, there are some interesting topics that are developed regarding the draft, animals in zoos, and academics vs. athletics.
I also greatly enjoyed the many pop culture references like Bottlecaps (I loved those!), Fondue Parties, and Howard Johnson's (HoJos). Plus Gramps is around to help drive Sunny to events and they have a really meaningful conversation about the draft.
As you can see, this is an other strong addition to the series. I loved it as a former 70's kid and hope that todays kids will find their glimpse at that era to be enlightening....more

Each chapter focuses on a food memory from different periods in his life. The first chapter is "Rice and Fish." While at a Thailand refugee camp, they take over a Bánh cuốn stand (Chapter 2), and when they are able to emigrate to California, Chapter 3 features "Steak and Potatoes. I love the idea of food memories and the association one has with that time in their life. I really enjoyed reading Thien Pham's story although I would have liked to have a little more context like the year they came to America, his age in each chapter, and so on. The darkly inked panels were beautiful and effective for times of peril such as the pirate attack on their refugee boat, but at times I had a hard time seeing what exactly was happening in some of the finer details. Rounding down from 4.25. Highly recommended!...more

Love "The Hiding Place" and want to experience it in a new way? Share it with a graphic novel lover you know? Here is your chance!
We had a trip to Holland planned for this August so I saved a copy of this book to take with me on the trip. We were not able to tour the Corrie ten Boom house as the reservations book out months in advance, but we did get to walk around Harlem. My grandson reading buddy has really enjoyed thumbing through the pages. After starting to read together, we decided it was a bit over his head at the age of 7. I will leave a copy with my son (his dad) and they will dig in when he is older.
The creators of this book did such a great job sticking to the most integral pieces of the story. I loved the chance to reread the story in this format. Such an inspiring story!
May Corrie ten Boom's journey be our guiding star, leading us closer to Jesus and lighting the path of kindness, courage, and forgiveness for each of us....more
