Grant County waIn between books 3 and 4 of this series I read 2 of the Grant County books and skimmed the rest. It felt so good to be back with Will. Grant County was so violent and visceral - like Slaughter had something to prove. I was worried I’d come back and like this series less - that it would be tainted. But I appreciate all of the information and experience I took from Grant County - and it just added. This was the best book in the series, and it was truly excellent. ...more

Either the reader loved the first book and is in for the long haul - or they didn’t. I am going to write this review for me.
I hated everyone in this book. Everyone. Their decisions were distasteful. Disastrous. Despicable.
That said - it has opened so many doors to take the series in wildly exciting directions. Onward!...more

I started out thinking I was reading this gritty early-2000s cop drama that was gonna be fun and dated and gross. And it turned into something unexpected. When I read that one twist I literally sat bolt upright.
This book was excellent. I enjoyed aspects of Pretty Girls, but the subject matter was too much. This book had all of that good but with a much better story. This was a wonderful combination of story, writing and character - everything perfectly edgy.
I cannot wait for the next book in this series. ...more

Often I get impatient - the pieces of story can get irritating.
By about halfway I was ready for resolution. There was some repetition. Some clear untruths. And while I wasn’t 100% certain of the mystery I had a strong idea.
The ending felt flat - and silly. It cheapened the entire story for me. It seems like the author could have gone in a more realistic direction. ...more

I had an easier time believing the fantasy shifter SJM I just finished. Proof that I can suspend reality - but not to the degree that messy, irresponsible, flaky Finlay requires. By page 100 this book was actually personal nightmare fuel. Stephanie Plum did this 20 years ago - and she did it better. ...more
