Cosy fantasy (cosy anything really) isn’t my bag but TJ Klune and Travis Baltree have gone a long way to fixing that. While this story had a few pacing problems, it was still a warm, entertaining and satisfying read. I enjoyed the two main characters’ relationship, but felt a bit too much time was spent on the dynamics of setting up home together. I loved the magical world building including the dragons, griffins and unicorns. Many thanks to Netgalley for an arc of this book....more

You can tell because although I usually have a few books on the go, I concentrated almost exclusively on this- the ‘just-one-more-chapter’ syndrome. Short chapters meant this was a fast paced book. The magic in this book is based on whether you are soul-bonded or not to an animal. I loved the range of creatures in this book: dragons, gryphon, khiroi, dire wolves , amongst others who share a magical energy with their bonded humans. Jai and Frida are the two central characters but my favourite was Rufus who comes to their aid. A thumping good read....more

If you like martial books then reading about fighting and training, training and fighting, on and on, you’ll be fine. It was exciting to start with but there seemed to be no end, not much of a story in between. I have read a few excellent african inspired fantasy and this was partly what drew me to this book- alas, it didn’t feel very integral to the story or writing at all. Tau, the main character , did not work for me at all....more

A richly imagined world and characters who grab your heart. A true epic fantasy coming of age magical adventure. I loved it. If I have any minor quibbles, I think it was slightly long and a few things were over explained for a younger market. This is a rip roaring adventure of the very best kind. Enjoy!...more

I only picked this up because I’d just read another series set in the same world by this author and really enjoyed it, so thought I’d give Heartstrikers another chance. This book was a completely different beast. The politics, manoeuvring, the development in relationships, the action, the whole shebang was seriously ramped up. Excellent stuff!...more

I was breathing heavily all through the dramatic finale and yes, there were a few tears at the end. What a trip! I adored the war-beasts especially Helcate and even Celaphon at the end. Vintage, Tor, Noon , Hestillion were fully developed characters, at the core of the story while the other characters were also just as richly described and understood: Aldasair and Bern, Chenlo, Okkar and Tyranny. This was a truly original and imaginative trilogy, a mostly fantasy and sci fi blend. Book hangover coming this way...this was The Book With All the Gifts....more
