The descriptions of New Orleans in the nineties was fun and the pop and film culture were a trip down memory lane. Overall I don’t think I was the ideal readership for this story. I loved this dystopian story where those with songlight are ‘unhuman’ and dehumanised in the worst possible way, once caught. Where propaganda maintains a war, the people unaware of the State’s true agenda. Many of the tropes you’d expect to find are here, so in that sense, nothing original, but it’s done really well, which makes all the difference. I enjoyed all the characters, evil ones too! The rest of this series is going on my auto-buy list. Many thanks to NetGalley for an arc of this book....more

London and then St. Olav’s start to fall prey to a spell; Effie and Anna continue to suffer under their mutual curse; a new inquisitory organisation has an agenda- I loved the christmas spent by the coven at Rowan’s house and Attis’s christmas present to Anna. The last quarter of this book was amazing and took me surprise in a few ways. I had also thought this was probably a duology so am very pleased to discover there will be at least one more book. I cant wait for the rest of the story! (But I’ll have to!) many thanks to Netgalley for an arc of this book....more

I was unconvinced by the author insisting the two main characters Arthie and Jin were tough Peaky blinder types. And I wasn’t a fan of all the unfulfilled romantic/sexual tension- not sure how many times “his gaze dropped to her lips” happened, but it was many times too many. It’s a heist story with vampires and enough plot for the next in series (but not me). Many thanks to Netgalley for an arc of this book....more
Hold on to your hats- this was terrific! This is and feels like the beginning of an epic new fantasy and I am already so impatient for the rest. ThereHold on to your hats- this was terrific! This is and feels like the beginning of an epic new fantasy and I am already so impatient for the rest. There really is an enormous cast and each character is fascinating- I spent most of the book wondering how they would all fit together. The world is complex and detailed- how the author managed to avoid information dumps- and he did- is incredible. The world has a South American flavour to it. There wasn’t a boring character among them. The magic system has elements of Sanderson but is unique and compelling. This was a real treat! Many thanks to Netgalley for an arc of this book....more

I am a fan of historical mysteries and I haven’t read that many (if any) set in Greece. This is aimed at the YA market but it was nevertheless a worthwhile read even by an old codger like me! From the afterword it seems the author knows a great deal about Ancient Greece, but I found some of her vocabulary annoyingly anachronistic. Many thanks to Netgalley for an arc of this book....more
