He raises enough money to buy two beautiful dogs, and names them Dan and Ann.
This book is a classic. It's interesting to find out more about the author. I also watched the movie and the "extras" on there his wife said he had a hard time with the letter "e" and wanted to add a "e" on every word just about. His wife edited the book. She said Wilson wrote the book three times before finally completing. He wanted to name the book, "The Secret of the Red Fern", but the publisher didn't like the name and changed it to "Where the Red Fern Grows".
Back to the story...It's about a boy growing up in the back woods with his family, training coon hounds. Also, it's heartbreaking too. The story goes along with some school kids wanting to bet that their dogs are better in the coon hunting contest. Billy enters because his grandpa wants to show them, Billy's dogs never get to finish cause his grandpa takes a fall and Billy calls off his dog to go find his grandpa.
I read this book when I was in middle school and recently watched the movie. The movie explains a little bit about how they trained the animals, the dogs, raccoon, and the cougar. It was interesting.
The book was about Wilson's childhood. I believe the setting (if I remember right) was in Oklahoma. __________________________________________________________________________-
SPOILER....SPOILER....SPOILER.....
SPOILER part: Dan dies after the bullies dog tries to attack him (I can't remember if the dog dies from the dog, the bully or landing on a ax, but Dan does die) and Ann doesn't want to eat and basically dies of a broken heart.
Toward the end we find out what the red fern means that it only grows when they are there by angels. ...more
I gave this book 5 stars because it's something the public should be aware of and I am one who never knew anything about this. That being said howeverI gave this book 5 stars because it's something the public should be aware of and I am one who never knew anything about this. That being said however, it's a well written book and explains the problems with high pitched sounds and sonar that the Navy was using (and probably still is, who knows).
The whales started coming to shore and getting stranded there and the author talks about his research and how they came to try to save these whales and other sea life from what the Navy was doing.
If you are interested in the environment, ocean, whales, dolphins, other sea-life and it's impact than you should read this book.
Not only does this book talk about the effects that the high pitched sounds do on these beautiful creatures, but also the author tells it more like a story. You also learn interesting facts. For instance, I never knew that whales had 13 stomachs. I just find this fascinating.
These creatures of the deep can't speak for themselves and we all need to stand up and help them out before we miss out and they become extinct. ...more

Benoit thinks he doesn't love his dog as much as he should. He sets out on a journey for just the two of them in his RV. Along the way he meets people, their dogs, and becomes closer to his own dog, Casey.
Benoit lets us know the good and the bad of what he finds out on his trip along the way.

Other times he was a delight to have around and became famous with the locals. Everyone loved to visit him and give him food. At one point he was overweight (imagine that for a pig, lol) and had to be put on a diet.
This book was a delight to read. Interesting facts about pigs and the author Sy also has a sense of humor about Chris' adventures. Christopher (the pig) was named after the "real" Christopher Hogwood. Seems he had a sense of humor about it also, and didn't really mind a pig being named after him.
This story shows you that the runt of the litter can thrive and make a wonderful pet as the rest of the litter.

It's about animals who have been left behind when the Jewish people were taken away from their homes. These are the stories you never hear about in other books.
Most of the stories are heartbreaking about the animals, but also stories that teach us some of the history of that time that we may not have known. You get to know the families and their pets.
I give this this book five stars for several reasons, two of which are obvious...
1. Anyone going through this awful time and to have to be so brave while going through this deserves the best in life. Even those who didn't survive we have to honor.
2. The animals also suffered and they deserved to be honored also. Most of the people had a big heart and tried to help those suffering animals.
3. The stories in this book are heartfelt. You can feel their pain even though the stories are short. A well written book.
I'd say the only downside to this book if there is one, is that I would have liked to have more stories and kept reading. I found the stories about the people as interesting as the stories about the animals. ...more
