Probably: a reference led me to it, the high reviews recommended it, and then I saw that Neil Gaiman wrote the Foreword. I also like the occasional dip into Japanese literature. And in many ways, the book was enjoyable. Something, however, bothered me throughout. It's a children's book, so it reads fairly quickly, yet it took me a comparatively long time to will myself to read it—I resisted its line of expansion.
The book is written in two voices: in third-person when following around Copper, a fourteen-year-old; and in first-person epistolary when following what Copper's uncle is writing to Copper in a notebook. At first I attributed the resistance to an overthinking of the science, philosophy, history that was being delivered partly through the writings of Copper's uncle (in the notebook), but also partly through their conversations (in real time). In the second half of the book, I realised that I was bothered by the moralising of the uncle in an all-too-close reflection on what was happening in Copper's life. The reflections were of a didactic nature, probing, questioning, and explicitly/implicitly delivering answers to moral issues. It's like reading the novelistic storyline and then having someone explain the rights and wrongs of that storyline. The resulting atmosphere is claustrophobic: the reader has to fight for interpretative space.
For a Japanese book, I was also surprised to see quotes from Western authors, what felt like an explicitly whiggish perception of history, and an extensive praising of Napoleon's heroism and of war heroism in general (followed by only gentle and brief rebuke of such praise). The book ends on a discussion of how the first statues of Buddha were made by the Greeks, which, true as it may be, coming after everything else, sounded (to my Western ears) as such a Western-centric tone to end on. Why such an orientation towards the West?
Perhaps my expectation of learning more about Japanese culture was misplaced; perhaps I overinterpreted. I am also missing the most specific context of 1937, when the book was written.
The Translator's Note at the end of the book revealed that my assessment of my discomfort wasn't entirely misplaced. Yoshino and a friend of his had indeed intended this book as an 'ethics textbook' for young readers, 'to teach the next generation about the importance of a free and rich culture to human progress' (278). The intention was certain good, as I understand the Note, coming from a generous faith in a peaceful, cooperative humanity. What resulted, however, for me felt far too rigidly directed and bound to an outdated ethical framework—even whilst the overarching principles of 'thinking for oneself' and 'standing up for others during troubled times' are exactly what is needed in today's world.

If that’s the kind of life people led and lead today in the modern guise, then it’s an eye-opening story for those of us with more sheltered daily experiences. It’s also a warning and a question mark. Is this all there is to life? Or, are we deluding ourselves to think there is more? Very cynical of me, but then this novel reeks of darkness....more

The protagonist sells stones that he collected in the river to people passing by the river and manages to sell none. This is the culmination of a string of jobs, each of which is more absurd than the previous. The man’s wife grows sceptical of his enterprises and increasingly distant; their young son is as irritating as his parents are uninterested in him (the father especially).
Though I can value at least somewhat the genre, and the absurdity as well as some of the aesthetic, on first blush this story struck me as not particularly insightful or illuminating. The message I draw from it is questionable, the impression murky — both may change upon on reflection. Until then....more

(hide spoiler)]...more

The 5: It is messy in the way it plays out and therefore remarkably realistic and relatable. Retroactively this is a tale that exposes a dimension of human suffering as well as our own ability to ameliorated that suffering from within.
The 1: However the core idea of this volume and the previous volume feels too random, too much like a deus ex machina that solves a a Gordian knot of plot strands not even by cutting through them but by simply choosing to pretend there is no knot in the first place.
My critique goes away if the reader is prepared to accept a lack of answers on a grand scale and is satisfied with a single, singularly deep character portrait (I choose to be that reader).
In fact, the strength of the whole series may lie precisely in its ability to keep refocusing the reader’s attention—time and again, until the very end—on the titular character, away from Teacher, who is the true protagonist. The diversion feels like a betrayal, but some psychoanalytic interpretation would likely yield that the diversion-betrayal is merely a faithful representation of what we do to ourselves.
Thoroughly enjoyable series—worthy of contemplation. Highly recommended. ...more
