I want to say that I loved this…but I really can’t because I found the story difficult to follow overall. It felt like it had too much going on. And while I did catch on towards the end…I just can’t really say I enjoyed it as much as everyone else. I can say that it didn’t have anything to do with the 'psychic abilities'…I actually liked the way that aspect was handled.

This one is for all the readers who can’t stand when the heroine in a vampire book is completely unable to see that the guy she thinks is so hot, is really just a blood-sucking killer. It also helps if you have a soft spot for anything remotely similar to the movie The Lost Boys (the one with Kiefer Sutherland) and/or Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Overall I found this to be a refreshing take on the YA Vampire books…and honestly, I’m surprised that Suzanne Young was able to impress me this much…since I abandoned her Program Series due to how immature it was.

This is only available on Audio…but not only on Audible. I listened on Libby through my library. It did have a slight ya-ish feel to it since the characters are college-age but otherwise, it was a very entertaining story that was very well performed. The important thing to note is if you can’t deal with the supernatural…then this isn’t the audiobook for you.

There is something about this story that just missed the mark for me; it relies heavily on the supernatural elements for the mystery-solving to even work but then it keeps sweeping those same elements under the rug like they couldn’t possibly be true...more

When it comes to ghost books you never know if they are going to work for you or not. This one may have worked better than any others that came before it. I’ve never rooted for ghosts this much. If you’ve ever liked a book with ghosts and would also possibly like them mixed up in a murder mystery…then I can’t recommend this book enough.

Overall, this series has been brutally devastating yet ultimately satisfying. You never know what’s going to happen or far she’ll go with any given aspect of the story. I find myself thinking she’ll never go there and then she does…and then some. With that being said, I’m never able to be fully immersed in each book until I’m at least two-thirds into it. Maybe, if the stories were shaved down a bit, they would work better for me. I actually started this in September of ‘21…I really struggled to get into this….that, and listening to audiobooks is a lot easier on the eyes.
For the most part, I had lost any interest in finishing the Mortal Instruments Series...I only made it to book #4. My love for this genre has really waned since I first started those books...also Jace and Clary's story was being dragged out for way too long. But I kept hearing about this prequel series to TMI and I found the first two books on sale at Audible...so I bought them, in the hopes that maybe they would be what I need to re-spark my interest in the genre, and then they languished in my library of audiobooks...for a few years, actually. I started it on a whim and the beginning pulled me in quickly and easily...
While I believe this has the makings to be a five-star book, a steampunk-ish plot, likable characters, and a fabulous ending...it failed to spike any real emotion from me. I just wasn't that into it. But if you loved The Mortal Instruments and you're not afraid to read/listen to something that has a decidedly historical/England vibe then you should definitely give this a try...if you haven't already, of course, because let's face it...I'm a little late to the party. Also, the narration is really superbly performed by Jennifer Ehle. Although I did notice, in Book #2 she is not the female narrator...I wonder why that is?

I needed more volume. This is probably not actually the narrator's fault, she actually performed quite well, but I struggled with hearing what she was saying...her inner dialogue was so flipping quiet, it was a constant struggle for me. When this sort of volume discrepancy happens, it tends to pull you out of the story...which is never good and I really hate when a book won't go loud enough for me to hear it.
Where the first book had this creepy "children-of-the-corn" and "I-see-dead-people" thing going on, this had a more of a supernatural feel to it which lent towards The Vampire Diaries, with the immortal beings, fated romance, doomed brother, and body jumping. Overall, I feel that this was a much-needed continuation of the story...but...I really believe this could have been told in one book and been much better for it.

MY THOUGHTS⇣
I really liked this two-book series. It's part modern-day mixed with the '50s and also part supernatural mixed with science fiction. Amy Harmon can write some stories with swoon-worthy romances...and all of them different from one another. I haven't disliked a book by this author yet...and I doubt that I will.
Slow Dance in Purgatory felt more like a ghost story...with dual timelines. Prom Night in Purgatory had more of a time-travel/science fiction feel to it. You could just read/listen to Book #1 and call it good but the story morphed into so much more in book #2...it really delved into the time-travel theme. Her way of explaining the time-traveling/ghosting/space-time continuum or "the science of it all" felt just right for me...explained well enough without being bogged down with too much scientific-ness...just right for a romance story.
Narration by Emily Woo Zeller was actually pretty well performed...I don't always like her, it depends on the character she's reading for, I guess. It could have used a male narrator for the male POV, though.
