ugh. i don’t know. this book was good, like don’t get me wrong. i read the whole thing very quickly and was totally engrossed into the story, it was well written (beautiful! even! at times!). i don’t think i’m capable of understanding the depth or motivations of Eve, the main character, and frankly I don’t think anyone but the author truly understands her. She makes shitty choice after shitty choice and at some point, I just didn’t care anymore. “Oh look! Eve is making another terrible choice! Ok!”
Other things I hated: • Olivia is so half fleshed and then practically forgotten about halfway through the book before wandering back in near the end. • Nathan sucks ass. I don’t trust him at all. I literally do not like him period, he probably did coerce that woman, and I hate the things he says to Eve and I hate that the author makes every leap to make those things okay. They are not. • During the middle, Eve and Nathan’s relationship got weird and manipulative. Notably during the rape fantasy scene. It was uncomfortable and made me hate Nathan. • Why the fuck would you make a book where the main character is a headstrong lesbian and then slowly devolve her into a lying, simpering, woman who is obsessed with a man. That is just annoying to me. • The last line of this book comes after some really beautiful prose where Eve is enveloping her thoughts about Nathan, and then she says “he is the greatest act of service i have ever had.” This annoys me because it is not true. Nathan did nothing for her. Other than fuck her, apparently so amazingly that she literally lost all her other personality traits and just wanted to be fucked by Nathan. Maybe this is the point of the book, and is intentional. Either way I find it stupid. • This book had a lot of sex scenes which is not necessarily a bad thing, but the author objectively used the word “cock” too much and it pulled me out repeatedly because ew.
You may be asking yourself what I did like about this book, because I am digging on it so hard here. And frankly I don’t know. Especially the first half had some sort of je ne sais quoi to it that was nice!!! It was enjoyable to read. Especially the first half. I, just like Eve to Nathan, liked this book for no real reason, and in spite of its many and aggressive flaws....more

The not-really lesbian, whos never done this before, who’s young and submissive, with a dark past and a obsessive and gullible disposition and 2.) The older bisexual woman, who’s attraction to women is secondary and secretive when compared to her attraction to men, who is mean and bitter and doesn’t treat girl 1) with the respect she deserves. The middle of this book, when we return to Mallory’s youth, her identity, her mother, is really great and enjoyable writing. The professor, however, (who i don’t think has a name?) reminds me terribly of Carol from price of salt and that is not a compliment. Actually, this entire book is very price of salt- core…. but maybe that’s because every lesbian book has those two characters....more
