Hoist the colors, mateys!
Jill is a high school student and fencer on her way to one day reaching the Olympics. On vacation in the Bahamas, she finds the old, rusted tip of a rapier on the beach and it transports her back in time to the glory days of piracy in the Caribbean.
Thanks to the masterpiece of a TV series that is Black Sails (HIGHLY RECOMMEND) I love stories about this pocket of history, where pirate ships were democracies and Nassau was freer than much of the rest of the world. Steel features cameos of many famous pirate captains from that era, including Jack Rackham, Edward Teach, Anne Bonney, Charles Vane, and more.
This is one of those books where I felt that all the minor characters were actually more interesting than the heroine herself. Jill was more of a conduit to tell the story of other pirates around her than an active player in history.
Still, I enjoyed this YA standalone. It has an almost nostalgic feel of classic pre-Twilight YA where the focus is actually on a coming-of-age journey and not just on falling in love with problematic heartthrobs.

Great review, Helen! Ah, this does sound like a swash-buckling read! With fencing, too! Glad it was an enjoyable read for you! 🧡

Anything with fencing sounds like fun :) I loved the last sentence of your review (and the rest of it, too, of course) - amen to that!

Oehhh that premise sounds highly entertaining!!! It’s too bad Jill wasn’t really the main character in her own story though🙁 Also, yes, Black Sails is soooo good! I never finished that show for some reason, but I still want to get back to it! I agree that that pirate-like setting is so fascinating and enthralling😍 Lovely review <3
