2 1/2 stars bumping up for the epilogue. Sad to say that the best part of this book for me was the ending and epilogue. This is the story of the early Mackenzies, or the ancestors of the characters we know and love from the series.

It took me a long time to connect to the main characters and I never felt totally invested. I wasn't too upset with some of the more emotional situations because I wasn't really connected to the brothers at all. I felt that there was a lot of politics that I have read in other books, with characters in other situations very similar, and just was bored through a lot of it. Then the last battle just seemed so improbable (view spoiler) And Malcom's survival was the most improbable. I felt that his character had a 180 turn in personality from the easy going on the sides and protecting his family to, putting the woman he supposedly loves and is protecting, in danger.

So not my favorite Mackenzie novel.

------Update while reading----------
25% in and very bored with both the main couple the politics and the characters. I'm almost at a DNF and I love this series. This one is just not catching me.

Heather I’m up to Chapter 10 and feeling the same way. I loved the rest of the series, but so far this one isn’t capturing my attention like the others.

Amyiw The next book that is set in the ancestors' time is really good, Alec Mackenzie's Art of Seduction. Who is the brother of Malcolm. I avoided reading it for over a year but shouldn't have. This one just flopped for me. But really that is how some of Jennifer Ashley's book are for me. Mostly good, some really good, and a few not so much. Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage was another that flopped for me from this series.
