really liked it
bookshelves: fantasy, worldbuilding-sf, 2016-shelf

Definitely not the worst of the series, it follows right after the previous book and firmly brings Vlad back into his hometown, and much to my relief. It's a very decent read, self-contained, and of course it had to do with his ex-wife. :) What return to his old haunt with intentions of resuming a semblance of his old life after making such an enjoyable hash of it would be right without making sure that his Ex was involved?

The whole novel was enjoyable, but it wasn't huge except for the whole assassinating his goddess or taking down a whole room full of sorcerers, though. You know, little things. :)

What? Assassinating his goddess? Well... she has it coming. ;) It's complicated. You know how relationship problems are. :)

Nice return, but not precisely epic like that last one. *sigh*

Trish So he has an ex-wife and an affair with a goddess that he then kills? *lol*

Bradley I made it sound that way, but no, neither. They split semi-amicably, him leaving her his entire criminal empire and she, being pregnant. It was ideals. She wanted him to join in the civil war, he wanted nothing to do with it. And then he killed the absolute monarch and destroyed his relationships with everyone in the city. :) Oops. So off he went. He still loves her and will do everything for her, so when she's losing his old empire, he says he'll help. (stupid move)

As for the goddess... well... she's the Demon Goddess Vera usually associated with all magic, and she made him her avatar and he's NEVER liked it and constantly fights it. When told, by her godly enemies, to assassinate her, it's REALLY TEMPTING to him. She's played really fast and loose with him. Just because they have a working relationship doesn't make it an easy one. I think she's actually kinda smitten with him, but he, oh he just WANTS TO HAVE PEOPLE STOP FUCKING WITH HIM. :) He's rather likeable for a ruthless ex-assassin. I think it's because of tiny pet dragons. :)

Trish He sounds like a keeper.

The goddess however ... I don't even like to imagine people telling me what to do, let alone someone/something making me his/her/its avatar!

And what do you mean for an ex-assassin. Pfff. Don't you get all snobby on me! *likes assassins very much as long as I'm not the target*

PET DRAGONS????????????????
I am so gonna go on vacation in that world!

Bradley Snarky pet dragons. Like, totally modern UF snark, way back then. :)

And it's not like he stops killing. He just stops doing it for profit. I think he's just doing it for the good food in this novel. :) You can't survive on dried meat you killed yourself for years without going on a real binge when you get the chance. :)

And intelligent legendary weapons are here, too. :)

Trish Everyone gets a pet dragon (snarky ones even, my favourite kind) except me! *pouts*

Also, I don't see what's wrong with him killing - if it's the "right kind", which it usually is in such books.

Bradley Usually gods, nowadays. It helps if he has a weapon that can handle it. :) I think he likes keeping his Demon Goddess on her toes. :)

And no, not everyone gets pet dragons, even here. Vlad is special. :)

Trish Oh, a little special snowflake! *lol*

Too bad he's a well-trained assassin or I might steal that dragon from him.

Bradley And a very special blade. :) Don't forget the blade. *shiver* He no longer has to worry about the soul-stealing blades that prevent resurrections, now. *shiver*

Trish I never forget any blade. Especially when they are so special as the one you hint on.

Bradley Well for the very longest time it was only a chain, but you know how those things go. :)

Trish No, I don't. I have an entire collection, hoping they will all one day transform.
