it was amazing

Number 20 in the Jack Reacher series and one of the best out of all of them! This Jack is slightly different from the usual and I wonder if Lee Child is planning on letting him have a relationship and stay in one place a while in the next book. I very much enjoyed his interactions with Chang and laughed aloud several times at his humour. I also liked his intelligence. Sure he still takes on three thugs at a time and wins but he also plans and strategises and works things out. I thought this book was an excellent read, practically unputdownable and action packed. Loved it:)

Lisa Love this series Phrynne - need to catch up!

Elaine Nice review Phrynne. Just wondering as a "never read any Lee Child" person and also being asked this at work, in your opinion can you read this one without having read any others?

Brenda Excellent review Phrynne...I may have to read it soon now;)

Yes Elaine, you can. They are all stand alone stories. Knowing Jack Reacher is good, but this series is different to a lot of others in that he stays the same pretty much all the time. I didn't start with #1 (though I'm reading them as they come out now)

Phrynne Although by this one the author does assume that you know Jack's idiosyncrasies like travelling without luggage:)

Brenda LOL! That's true...he's done that for a long time!

Phrynne But a reader coming in at this stage might wonder why he does.

Brenda Yes I guess if it's not explained why...

Phrynne Too busy right now reading all your reviews!!! Phew:)

Brenda LOL!

Monika Puente I have never read his book or the series but I want to read this one. Could you tell me if I am supposed to read his previous books in the series to read this one?! Are they related and would I be missing out if I do not read the previous sequels . I would really appreciate your suggestion. Thank you :)

Michael I liked this one quite a bit.

Lance Prynne, you are right. This could be the woman that settles Reacher...no, Jack down...but, he wouldn't be Reacher.

Phrynne That's true!

Lance I sent you a friend request because I am a huge Reacher fan. I just signed on to this site and it's pretty cool.

Phrynne It is a good site especially if you use it regularly.

Brenda I loved it too...he's back to his great form!!!

Phrynne Absolutely!

SPOILERS FOR REACHER #3 - TRIPWIRE

Perhaps the closest Reacher ever came to settling into ordinary, tied-down, domesticity was in Tripwire. While pursuing the villainous SOB, Reacher discovers that his now deceased former CO has bequeathed him his house. He also consummates a long-smoldering passion for his CO's now-grownup-and-therefore-approachable daughter. As always he moves on.

MILD SPOILERS FOR REACHER #20 – MAKE ME

Of the twenty thus far, this story is "romantically" unique (if romance and Reacher are compatible concepts) in that there is no neat tie up where Reacher and lover part company. The story is therefore uniquely (for the series) open-ended.

Child may be setting up a slightly different MO for Reacher, one that has him loosely tied down to his tall, lovely, and deadly new paramour. They may even team up again to catch a bad guy.

But don’t count on it.

Terri Lynn I loved the character of Michelle Chang.

Having blasted through all 20 of the novels, I found the Chang character to be not much different than Reacher's other lovers, who were military/policewoman.

At some point, perhaps Child will bring in a woman spy who will proved more of Reacher's Holmesian equal.

Dave Norris I agree

Dave Norris He has shown his vulnerability for the first time. Even Jack Reacher ages

Phrynne NO! He's not allowed to age. I am already having to cope with Harry Bosch and Charlie Parker getting past it. Fictional characters should remain young forever.

Brenda LOL!

Phrynne Sorry edit my above comment. I meant Harry Hole. As far as I know Harry Bosch is still not in his dotage.

Gloria I'm thinking he may have another adventure with Chang, but that'll be it. Just like when he previously settled down with that woman who was his ex-boss's daughter, I forget her name, but it seemed like he was finally going to be a kept man and was finally happy with 1 woman.. Of course it ended up not lasting, and he was soon back on the road, killing bad guys. So though Michelle is pretty badass, I doubt he'll stay with her for that long. Apologies if that was any kind of spoiler.. The book he was previously settled down in was out quite a few years ago so I don't think it's realistic to expect true Reacher fans not to have read it. Anyway, it's interesting to imagine what he'll do next. Liked your review.

Jim I see I mis-spoke above. In Tripwire, Child left the tied-down-Reacher question open. It wasn't until the next novel (in Reacher-world) that he was out and about, on-the-loose.

There were hints that Chang and Reacher is different than his other extended trysts - time will tell.

message 28: by Caryl (new)

Caryl Rose He has had other relationships and in the last novel Reacher was looking to settle down with the MP he helped out. She was still career minded. For a few of the novels, there were mentions by Reacher of hm aging and his skill set not being as sharp. I'm thinking that if Mr. Child never wrote another Reacher book, this is a great ending.

Sue Davidson I'm wondering if Jack is going to be rested by Lee Childs. Those headaches and dizzy spells are worrying.

Don't worry Sue. I just finished book 26 and he is still alive and well🙂
