it was ok
bookshelves: the-kids-are-all-right, gmba, meh-at-you

Okay, I did like this. But, the fact that it took me over a month to read it knocked off a star in my overall review.

I've heard so much about Tamora Pierce on this site, that I figured this would be a no brainer... maybe it's me. Yeah, it's probably me.

But, first of all, I found out that this is the first book in the SECOND series of books and that was turn off numero one. I don't like coming into a story if characters have already been introduced. It's like watching Problem Child 2 before Problem Child. It's just wrong.

Second, I get really tired of having to figure out names. I'm not expecting everyone to be named Kelly or Larry or something easy like that... but I'm tired of trying to remember who Lokeij is and if that person is Bronau or who's Nawat again? (Okay, that's a lie, I can't forget Nawat.)

I didn't hate it and I'll probably read the sequels. Although, I won't be happy with myself. Like when Ted McGinley joined Happy Days in Season 8. Sometimes you just can't stop.

Kim, in addition to your many other exceptional qualities, I love that you know Ted McGinley joined the cast of Happy Days in season eight. I want you on my Trivial Pursuit team. We'll kick their asses.

Why was Ted McGinley always added to the casts of dying television series? (See also: Dynasty and The Love Boat.) So, y'know, if the place where you work ever hires Ted McGinley, I'd suggest getting your résumé ready. (Just a tip.)

What does "gmba" stand for?

See, I feel differently about this book than you do. I DO expect everyone to be named Kelly or Larry. Then it's just a big letdown.

Larry?

Malia Can I suggest reading The Lioness Quartet before you give up on Tamora Pierce altogether? It is annoying reading characters that have already been established- so read the books that started it all. Reading Pierce isn't like reading Piers Anthony's Xanth novels; it helps to go in order. And its funner, you'll ruin fewer plot surprises that way.

Kim Thanks, Malia... I'll give that a try. :)

Mark I've decided just to read the first book of every series as a Tamora Pierce sampler. So far, it seems to be working out, character-wise (although I think I skipped the series with the shapeshifter—that'll come next).

What are the later books in each series like compared with the first ones?

Kristal Mark, the later books in each series are really good and don't lose their respective character's personality. In fact the characters grow as the books progress and the plots are all tied together. Very good books to read. :)

Mark Kristal, thanks for your insights! I appreciate that. :)

Sophia You should probably have read perhaps the Beka Cooper Series first.

Kristal Sophia, the only problem with doing that is that it isn't done yet. She has yet to release the last book of the series.

Nat McLennan I don't think it's entirely necessary to read Beka first. It's set so far before the others that it doesn't really involve any of the other characters, in fact you'd be better off reading the Lioness Quartet first given there are a few references. I think it's easiest to read them in the order they were published.

Yourfisharemine Trickster Choice is more like the 4th series out of five series. First the Lioness Quartet (Alanna), then The Immortals Quartet (Daine), then Protector of the Small Quartet (Kell, my personal favorite), this Series, and then the Beka Cooper Trilogy (which can stand by its self considering it happens a two hundred or so years before the other books)

Jayana okay okay..can someone explain to me which series is the first and whether they are interrealated and spin offs

Yourfisharemine Each of the series exists within the same country Tortall, each series takes place a few years after the previous one so that the (ie characters who were teenagers in the beginning of the Lioness Quartet (the first series) have a child who is a teenager in the Protector of the Small Quartet (the third series). Because they are in the same country and pretty much the same time period characters from the previous series show up in the later books as supporting characters and events are mentioned as well. The main cast of characters are new however.

Chronologically the book series go like this (the numbers are the order in which they were written):
(6)Beka Cooper Trilogy - (about the ancestor of a character in the (1)Lioness Quartet and can be read at any time.)
(2)Lioness Quartet
(3)Immortals Quartet
(4)Protector of the Small Quartet
(5)Tricksters Duology

Samantha These are the weakest books in Pierce's world of Tortall (for me, at least). I suggest reading the series in this order:

Song of the Lioness (first quartet, introduces all major characters throughout the rest of the Tortall novels)

Immortals Quartet (second quartet, introduces Daine and the titular Immortals)

Protector of the Small (third quartet, introduces Kel, who is the second female to try for her shield)

(they were written after POTS and take place after POTS as well)

Provost Dog books (trilogy, goes over the early life of an ancestor of a character first introduced in Lioness quartet)
