Buddy read with Tweety!!
One word to describe Ruined: Boring
I was literally bored the entire time I was reading this. I couldn't connect to any of the characters (except Cas, he's a cutie) and the plot. I just wasn't invested at all. I sat there reading and just wanting it to end. I hate DNFing books and I always have hopes they'll pick up, but unfortunately Ruined didn't pick up. I'm probably a minority because a lot of reviews I read were praising how fast it was. Who knows. Might be because of my damn slump. But basically, I was going to cry at how boring it was.
Ruined offered nothing new to YA genre, but I didn't really care about that. When you read too many books, you always get to a point where books are somewhat repetitive. Also, there's more to a book than its plot. There's the writing, the characters, the pacing, the execution...
--> Writing: Pretty simplistic and easy to follow, despite being a tad confused at first with the world building. (too many names!)
--> Characters: Like I stated before, I couldn't connect to any of them except Cas. I just didn't care. Cas was adorable and he's basically one of two reasons I didn't rate this lower. Our MC, Em was indeed a badass, but I also couldn't care less. I liked the relationship between Cas and Em, there was angst and insta-love. Again, as I have stated many times before in many of my reviews: I don't mind insta-love if it isn't over the top. Cas and Em's wasn't really extreme, but I was hoping it took a little more longer to develop.
--> Pacing: Like I said before, boring.
--> Execution: Good despite not having anything special or new.
I'm still going to read the second book when it comes out because I think it has the potential to become really good. I'm curious to see where things will go.
