it was amazing

Very daring, elegant novella about transitions, slow and rapid, unexpected and desired metamorphosis which we are all subject to, beautifully told.

Richard I liked this one too. I've been meaning to read The Foxes Come at Night for a while but it keeps slipping my mind. Thanks for reminding me!

Ilse Highly tempting, Katia - I read his Rituals last year and was mesmerised, I hope to revisit it this summer.

Yes, I did not know what to expect. I have not read his fiction before. And it is really powerful and thoughtful. The impression lingers and it is the one of those little books when the aftertaste is almost better than the taste.

He is also very courageous and imaginative in his subject matter. But I do not want to spoil it for you.

Fionnuala Found this neat review via Ilse's comment thread, Katia. Perfect.

Coming back here after having finally read it, your pithy one sentence review is simply the perfect encapsulation of this short book, dear Katia. And I wholly agree on that lingering aftertaste being better, thanks to that afterglow I came to appreciate the book more. I particularly liked the writing style and the sly way in which Nooteboom dropped some clues - and how he tickles me to read some books which are on my shelves since my students days :) (the poems of Slauerhoff for instance, and Pessoa's The Book of Disquiet).

Thank you, Richard (though 7 years late:-) I am sorry for such a late reply - your comment has missed me somehow.

Thank you, Fionnuala! Yes, Ilse gas made it resurfaced even inside of my head. Those were the days where I could just sit down and write one sentence of a review:-) And now I think I've lost the skill:-)

Thank you, my dearest Ilse! I think I would need eventually to re-read this. You are teasing me with such wonderful intertextuality and writing style while I honestly do not remember anything apart from its elegance and slyness. Maybe one of those evenings if I find it. Or maybe I would have to be happy with 533. Thank you for your fantastic review. I enjoyed this book through your eyes almost as much as the first time around and learned a new photographer!
