Frankenstein 4****

I approached this book with a completely open mind having never seen a Frankenstein movie of any kind in its entirety. I have seen snippets from time to time and that's all.
What I read in this book was so far from any preconceived notion I might have had. Such a simple story full of guilt, remorse, love and redemption.
The wordiness of the early 19th century sometimes gets in the way, but the story within is striking.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde 2**

I'll have to give Stevenson credit for coming up with a good premise for a story, but his execution leaves much to be desired. A modern author would have created something extraordinary, I'm sure.

Dracula 5*****

I'm so glad that I finally sank my teeth into the story of Dracula. Pardon the pun. It was very well-written, but at some times, too wordy.
It was written in the style of letters and diary entries of the various characters to give different viewpoints of the story. That was sometimes a distraction, but it really worked here. Very clever.
The main plot of the story is very good, but there are sub-plots that go off and distract from the excitement.
All in all, the book had its flaws, but it was so engrossing that I could not help but to give it 5 stars.

carl theaker You’ve never seen Frankenstein!?? That certainly would help in reading the book, but good lord how long were you in space?

James Thomas I love Frankenstein. Read/listened to it multiple times (George Guidell is the best reader for classics). I'm surprised that you liked this but didn't like Dr Jekell and Mr Hyde. I found the many similarities in the story and moral concepts explored. And, very randomly, the latter helped me understand the concept behind the incredible Hulk character. I thought the Stevenson did a great of portraying the struggle between ones Freudian ID and Super-Ego

The writing was what made the difference for me between the two books.

James Thomas Fair enough, the prose in Frankenstein is exceptional.

message 14: by Sukh (new)

Sukh Hamilton I loved all of those books. Particularly Frankenstein- especially when you consider it was her first book and her age. Her mother Mary W also wrote one of the most seminal feminist texts!

message 15: by James (new)

James Thomas I completely agree. What was the text her mother wrote?

message 16: by Sukh (new)

Sukh Hamilton She wrote ‘A Vindication of the Rights of Woman’ as a response to the Rights of Man.
She and her partner William Godwin were very forward thinking for that era.

James Thomas Thanks, I'll check it out
