“We notice the silence of men. We depend upon the silence of women. ”

I like this a whole lot but I also didn't... care for it? You could say? This book within the first few pages, establishes a very vast world and mythology which is truly magical and weird and funky but can truly be overwhelming at times. I would find myself rereading some parts to comprehend them completely, and that's not just cause I'm a Greek person reading books in English. I got into the groove after the while, but I was never drawn to it how I wanted to. I felt like a third person reading a book to someone who loves it. It didn't feel personal to me. Maybe it's the length, maybe I need my fantasy books to be bricks to feel immersed into the world and the characters. Idk. But the underwhelming conclusion didn't help either.

Will continue on with the series, since I have purchased all the books, but I found this truly to be a prologue to something much bigger. Hope I'm right. Also... Jack fucking rules man!

Tess You're def right. No spoilers but all the books are just continuation's of the characters lives or prequels and after reading the most recent one, I reread every heart a doorway again and loved it much more with all the knowledge I had.

I figured as much. I'm sure I will too appreciate the first book after I've read them all. I guess it's a hard series to get into but the effort I'm sure will be worth it

Viktoriia I agree with you on "retelling" tone. I've read 3 books in the series and this one is my favorite of them all. I don't think I'll continue with 4th and 5th book. What wasn't to my liking is the amount of social commentary in the 3rd book, which overpowered the plot and in a way became a driving force for a plot. I DO think it's important to have social commentary in fantasy books, however it's hard to pull it off to such extent in 200 page book.
Also, I'm glad you liked Jack! 2nd and 5th books are focused around Jack

I've heard bad things about the 3rd book, but I can't know till I read it. This series kinda fascinates me, the potential it holds. I need to continue to know, for now I don't know shit

LaDonna Maria, you had me at the quote. Very true. It is even more powerful. I am on the fence about the book, but I appreciate your review.

Georgia Zarkadaki It's an OK series. I listened to them on audiobook while doing chores.

Cali (Cal's Reading Corner) I felt distanced from this book too. Like I was watching all of it from the outside of the academy/school. I liked the worlds it built, but the characters were not latching.

Exactly

TheMadHatter "I like this a whole lot but I also didn't... care for it?" I think that sums up exactly what I felt too. :-)
