another debut feminist dystopia, another underwhelmed jessica. seems pretty on brand for me at the moment, unfortunately.

and this is probably going to be the worst review ive ever written because i cant even put into words why this didnt quite work for me. it wasnt a horrible reading experience - i was focused and finished it - so im gonna chalk it up to me not being in the right mood for this, because i cant really find anything super negative about it. i just didnt experience the emotions i think i was supposed to for this kind of story.

i think this was probably a ‘wrong book at the wrong time’ kind of situation for me. i need to learn, that when this happens, to set the book aside and come back to it, rather than push though and give it a mediocre rating/review. not really fair.

regardless, im happy to see that this is getting so much hype and praise from others!

noa i feel like i've discovered recently how important it is for me to be in the "right" mood when reading a certain book because sometimes i'm being unfair in my rating when really, i just... wasn't in the mood. i really wanna read this one, hope it works for me ! :)

jessica yeah, ive become a massive mood reader lately. it just isnt enough for a book to sound interesting, i really have to be feeling it. so i get it. i hope you enjoy this one! and pay attention to the cover - it will give some hints as to whats going on. ;)

Lane I definitely get where you’re coming from! I’ve had to set aside a fair share of books because I just wasn’t feeling it and I know that it was more me than it was the book. I’m a major mood reader and I’d follow those moods anywhere!

jessica your comment is making me feel so much better - a little guilty - but better. hehe. i need to do better at listening to my moods!

Laura I've learned to put a book down if I'm not feeling it at the time, nine times out of ten I'll always come back to it. I hate not finishing a book, it hurts my heart!

jessica im the same way. but i think that setting aside a book, with the intention of coming back to it when its a better time, is better than just giving up on it completely. i just need to make sure my heart knows that. :P

Sunny I’m seeing such mixed reviews on this one! Kinda worried to start it lol.

jessica its a little bizarre, but if it sounds interesting to you, then i suggest just going for it!! :)

Jen - The Tolkien Gal Great and honest review, jess. You're always so sweet to say that others have enjoyed the book despite your struggling to do so. I could learn a lot from your kindness!

jessica oh my gosh, jen!! your comment is just the sweetest! i felt guilty that this fell a little short than amazing for me, but thats what i love about the goodreads community - its a place where we can all share our opinions about books and bond over them, even if they are different thoughts. and you are such a vital part of that!! thank you for always being so wonderful and leaving such great comments! :)

Kristen Peppercorn i also had an arc of this and i literally can't figure out why i don't like this book i just know that i physically can't care to read past page 75.

Katie I don't know if it was your mood. I had the same experience. I think it was because the author didn't engage me emotionally to any of the characters. Never really fleshed them out. And it felt like the important things were so anticlimactic! I wanted to love it, but had so many problems with it 😕

Okay, thank you. This one bugged me a lot. Glad to know it wasn't just me.

Sara Fultz If you didn't like this, try annihilation. That's the vibe I got off of this book but it's writing style worked for me more.

Rachael Agreed!!!

Hannah Blackburn I agree - I read it in one-go so I was clearly hooked, but I was confused why I wasn't emotionally invested by the end. I would def read another book by the auhor tho :)

Ashley Davault I’m debating to start this one.

Indira I don't know if it was because you were in the wrong mood because I felt the exact same thing. I think there's something off about the book itself.
