So I had been looking forward to this book-full stop. I loved the cover, the teases and it sounded really fun. I clicked as soon as it was released and dug in.
There were some things I truly loved, the letters from our gal's mom that started each chapter. PERFECTION. Hit me in the heart and understood the importance of them because of my own personal history.
I got the overall jest of the story...set out to suspend my mind for the fake engagement, etc. There was banter and all yet, FOR ME...I had some issues with the tone of the main characters. I was not able to accept what the main guy called his niece and even though it was supposed to be "Cute", every time it showed up...it just drove home, yuck for me.
The overall theme was the idea of doing a Good Thing for a parent...but there were so many other issues that took me out of the good feels.

"You...you stupid..." I squinted, trying to find adequate words. And failing. He strode over to me, picked me up from the floor, and righted me against the sink. He turned on the tap and began to wash my face for me, running his big palm over my nose and mouth. He held me by the waist to keep me from falling.
"Finish that thought, Mad. I've a feeling it's going to be amusing," he said tonelessly, plucking a toothbrush from the silver container by the sink and applying a generous amount of toothpaste to it.
"Conceited...arrogant...egotistical..."
"Nah-ah. You don't get to use synonyms. That's cheating."
"Bastard!" I roared.

Hi Wendy! Reading your review gave me an idea: could your disappointment have stemmed from the low angst in the book? People seem to have enjoyed Shen's brand of angst and this one just fell short, somewhat? Hope your next read is more satisfying.

Otherwise, I think Shen is great fun and a smart writer.
