I read this maybe ten years or more ago, but now the fam has watched the whole series, we told them season eight picks up right where season seven left off, Joss Whedon writing, so here we go. I gave it three stars then and say the same thing now. The art work was just ok YA art mania and colors, the writing had glimpses of the old Whedon snark and flash, but was over all forgettable, lacking in focus. The adult Scoobies managing a multiplying team of slayers, okay, we'll see, everyone is reading all of it, so I guess I'm in.

Artemy Season 8 takes a catastrophically bad turn towards the end, but seasons 9, 10 and (to a lesser extent) 11 (plus season 9 of Angel & Faith) are still worth it. Honestly, Buffy comics got so much better in general once Whedon stopped writing them, as paradoxical as it may sound.

Dave Schaafsma Sigh, okay, I will try to keep going. And that is funny to hear of Whedon's failure in comics here. Reminds me of another huge comics fan, Ta-Nehisi Coates, who is also a complete and knowledgeable nerd about comics, who can't write a (comics) story.

Artemy Joss absolutely can write good comics — Astonishing X-Men is a masterpiece and Fray is great. But with these Buffy continuations it somehow just never really clicked for him. I kinda suspect it’s because he said all he had to say about these characters with the TV show, and when other writers took over the comics they really made them into its own thing.

message 4: by Rosemary (new)

Rosemary Standeven I absolutely loved the Buffy and Angel TV series - watched each episode many times, bought the DVDs ... but my one and only venture into a Buffyverse comic was enough to put me off forever. It is such a shame - I think Joss Whedon is amazing - but his comics leave so much wanting

Dave Schaafsma True, Artemy, those comics you mention are great.
