Dan Simmons is obviously a very gifted writer, but this book had way too many things in it that don't appeal to my personal tastes.

Do you think this is in the same vein as Lord of the Rings where people who have it as a top book of all time are weighing its legacy more than you?

No, actually I think it all just comes down to this book not really being the sort of thing I'm into as a reader.

I'm not sure that's true. I like a wide range of things.
I mean on SciFi my favorite series is The Sun Eater. And two of my favorite series are Malazan and Realm of the Elderlings.

To be fair, he liked the Witcher book.

I’ve started it three times and can not get through it. I love the idea, but the actual book is not for me.
I’d have to agree with Ryan. It definitely appears, —based on your ratings— that you favor pulp fiction as opposed to literary fiction. There’s nothing wrong with that btw. However, it is helpful to know reviewer’s personal tastes when building my own tbr for example.
