DNF. I can’t. The biggest crime here is letting the author read the audio book.

Amanda Awe. This was on my read list. I value your opinions and now I feel like I need to remove it.

message 2: by David (new) - added it

David The regular print version may be good, Amanda. I didn’t get very far. I would steer clear of the audible version.

Steve Some authors read their own work extremely well but they are rare. Barbara Kingsolver is a great example.

message 4: by David (new) - added it

David I think Louise Erdrich would be fine for a 2-minute reading at a book signing. For a 14-hour audio book, there’s no excuse to not hire a professional voice actor.

message 5: by Chasity (new)

Chasity Exactly the reason I stopped listening to The Night Watchman by her. She was not meant to be a narrator!

message 6: by David (new) - added it

David Agreed, Chastity. Narrating the audio is a siren call for authors. She should have tied herself to the mast.

message 7: by Laura (new) - added it

Laura Thanks - it's waiting my attention - sitting waiting 3 months, so I'm no longer v thrilled with her.

Lisa Will you pick this up in print?
I really did like this one, and I did not try to listen to it.

message 9: by David (new) - added it

David I may pick it up in print, but I’ve set it aside for now. My dislike is strictly due to the narration, particularly the baby talk used in dialogue between characters.

message 11: by Robin (new)

Robin I think the narration is BRILLIANT

message 12: by David (new) - added it

David I'm glad someone liked the narration, Robin! Unfortunately, it wasn't me.

message 13: by Jodi (last edited Apr 01, 2022 11:43AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jodi Ah, what a shame, David. The e- and print books are tremendous (IMO).

message 14: by Ashley (new) - added it

Ashley Ocean Thanks for the warning, still going to attempt print.

message 15: by Richard (new)

Richard Derus The only thing I'd call worse than this is allowing Margaret Atwood to drone read her own stuff. Venial sin, more than a mere crime.

Stacey Romano 100% !!!!!!!!!!!!

message 17: by Joe (new) - rated it 5 stars

Joe Sayler This is why there is disdain for people who listen to books rather than read them.

message 18: by Tara (new) - rated it 4 stars

Tara I love that the author narrated the audiobook because you know the pronounciations are as she intended. I just listened to it at 1.5x speed because the cadence was too slow for me. Best of both worlds!

message 19: by Tami (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tami Chesnut Robin wrote: "I think the narration is BRILLIANT" me too

message 20: by Tami (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tami Chesnut I am listening to it right now and really enjoying it. I didn't realize that it was the author narrating.

Jamie Hardin I also listened to it and I just had the hardest time finishing it

message 22: by Sarah (new) - added it

Sarah Came here to find this soft of discussion! I couldn’t agree more! I was intrigued by the story but her monotone was impossible to follow. And no matter how loud I turned it up (all the way to max), I could barely discern her spoken words . And I have EXCELLENT hearing.
